Sarcastic Gamer’s Game of the Year is…

December 5th, 2008 at 10:00 am · 72 Comments

What a year 2008 has been.  Great PS3 games, crappy Wii games, a resurgence in PC gaming and an explosion of RPG’s on the Xbox 360.  There’s been a ton of great games that have been released on every platform.  Unfortunately, as Connor McCloud would say, there can be only one…

There’s only one Game of the Year.  Chances are that you’re gonna disagree with our pick.  We’re okay with that.  Find out, after the jump!

A person’s Game of the Year is just that, the individuals personal choice for Game of the Year.  We have a great cross section of gamers that devote their time and energy to Sarcastic Gamer. We all have opinions and we definitely like to share those opinions.  There’s no way we could all agree on one Game of the Year, so, we’re gonna change it up. A Game of the Year pick is a very personal thing.  It’s governed by what games you’ve played, what games you haven’t played, what systems you own and what your personal preferences are in gaming.  Doc isn’t a big RPG fan, Rothbart dislikes Multiplayer games, PMPB has an irrational fear of Zombies…

You get the idea.

So, instead of picking one game that represents the entire site, I’m just going to let you read each SG crew member’s GOTY and let them explain it for themselves.

Let’s let our newest crew member, 8bitBass give his pick first.

My choice for game of the year for 2008 is Metal Gear Solid 4. I purchased the PS3 in order to play this game and I wasn’t disappointed. In fact, I was roped into one of the most intense, cinematic and emotional video game experiences I have ever seen. MGS4 has set the standard for how cinematic games should be made for this generation and those to come. I could gush on and on about the fight scenes, the boss battles, voice acting, extended cut-scenes and movies, epic and satisfying story-line and novel and innovative economy/ shop system but you get the gist.

MightyMutt: Fallout 3.

The game I looked forward to the most didn’t disappoint. Real immersive gameplay, in a well realized gritty & decayed post nuclear landscape. You know it’s a good game when you can’t wait to play through it again. Blowing up Megaton stands as my outstanding moment in gaming this year.

Havok: BioShock (PS3)

If I had to compare BioShock to a fictional animal, it would be a fire-breathing orca…with wings. I heard that Macaulay Culkin wears a copy of the disc around his neck to ward off evil spirits. The actor has reportedly never played Wii Music. Alright, I can’t confirm that last bit, but I can tell you that BioShock is one of the best first-person shooters I have ever played. The tremendous narrative, impressive graphics and addictive gameplay combine to create an experience that is one of a kind. There is plenty of gunplay for FPS enthusiasts, but enough item collection and exploration to please fans of adventure games. I spent countless hours simply wandering around Rapture’s dilapidated halls. And no, I wasn’t lost. I was simply admiring the beautiful dystopia

There´re 2 games that dominated my gaming year 2008:
Too Human & Mario Kart Wii

Yes, the Wii sucks…we all know that but Mario Kart Wii and No More Heroes were two frikin´ awesome games!

And Too Human was one hell of a game XD Frustrating, addicting, buggy and addicting again :P

    • I’ve got to call out the odd pick of Bioshock for PS3. That’s just a weird pick. I beat that game ten ways from Sunday in 2007!!! I know it was new to PS3 this year, but they didn’t do anything much to change it from the 360 version, certainly nothing that would qualify it as a game of the year. That just makes me sad for my PS3!!!

There’s only 2 games that deserve to be called GOTY this year:

      GTA: IV
      MGS4: GOTP

The rest are a joke. Unfortunately, since you can only pick one for GOTY, i have to go with Gran Theft Auto IV.

    • Zapscaps says:

I’m surprised that no one has mentioned Burnout Paradise for GOTY. Since it came out in January, the game has gotten better and better, with new online challenges and motorcycles. It seems like, since it came out so early in the year, most people are overlooking it as a GOTY contender.

Since no one else will do it, I would say that Burnout Paradise deserves to be the Game of the Year.

      @ Zapscaps

Though I have never played it, I imagine Paradise would be more likely to win best DLC of the year.

      @Zapscaps
Honestly, I got bored of Burnout Paradise rather quickly. And the motorcycle update? Did nothing for me pretty much. Now if they actually released an update with planes… we may be talking.

MGS4 easily, by far, not even close

Surprised I didn’t see that in there

    • T3mpus Fugit says:

      Aw jeez, talk about anti-climatic

      mass effect
Did no one else play this on PC or did everyone who did just not like it that much?

    • I think Prince of Persia is also a contender but may have came out too late.

    • Dan says:

Wow what an incredible year for games…..maybe better than 2004. Lets see Burnout Paradise, DMC4, NG2, TH, MGS4, Gears 2, Fable 2, GTA4, Fallout 3, L4D COD:WaW, Dead Space, FarCry 2, Bad Company, LBP, PoP, Mirrors Edge………one of , if not the best year ever…….How to chose it comes down to three factors for me:

Best Single Player – Fallout 3…so immersive, everyone that has played it knows. What an incredible experience that plays differently for each style gamer.

Multiplayer – L4D has been so much fun for me and my friends. Plenty of “Oh crap Boomer” moments, but why did they make achievements so hard like “no survivors get vomited on during a whole campaighn” or “no survivors take damge after contacting the rescue vehicle” or “no survivors take damage from special infected during a campaighn”. Holy hell those are hard.

Best Overall package – Gears 2 made the single player a significant step up from Gears 1 single player. Co-op is great (wish it was 4 player though). The multiplayer is more well balanced. It has bots, which can be really smart and Horde is the most interesting new mode added to any game this year in my opinion.
