Rumor time – Activision going ALL METAL with New Guitar Hero game

December 9th, 2008 at 9:00 am · 17 Comments

You heard it first here, folks. A source that we trust a whole heck of a lot sent word today that Activision is well on its way with another new Guitar Hero game with a playlist that is comprised entirely of METAL! Rumored bands include Black Sabbath, Korn, Slayer, Slipknot, and the Dixie Chicks, though I added that last one despite assurances from my source that they would not likely be in this edition.

Not firm title, date, or details just yet, but the person sharing this info with us hasn’t failed us yet, although they did make us wait an eternity for validation on the Halo rumor.

Anyhoo. Is this the way to go in your opinion? Standalone versions of these games rather than DLC songs? Which are you more likely to do: Buy a 60 dollar game or nitpick your favorites from an online library? Are Rock Band and GH overdoing things with all of these versions or do you welcome the vast array of genre and band-specific releases?

Well, I suppose this could be a game looking forward to for me, provided it gets a PC release too.
Otherwise the Guitar Hero: Metallica version would be the one for me.

In regards to this, I much prefer the way Rock Band handles this. I can play my entire library of songs from RB1 and all my DLC, past and present, with my RB2 disc. And when/if RB3 comes out I will be able to copy the RB2 songs to my HDD and play off my RB3 disc. Weekly DLC from wide ranges of genres doesn’t hurt either. I’m still waiting on the full SRV album coming. That will be so epic.

      I agree with Tenudin.
DLC lets us only pay for what we WANT, and we can play all of them without changing discs.

    • Tenudin says:

Yeah, I don’t know about anyone else but Rock Band is a really popular thing when I have friends over. It really can be the life of a party. Having to swap out discs every time someone wanted to play a different song would really be a pain. As DLC was released for Rock Band I was able to trade in almost all my Guitar Hero Games. I only have GH3 left because I like playing Pride and Joy and One. Once the SRV album comes out all I will keep it for is One.

About time we got some decent bands in here. This is what Guitar Hero should have been since it came out.

Part of the appeal of music games is that you get to play songs from a variety genres. Restricting the songs to one genre would hurt sales, as only metal fans would buy it.

    • peterocc says:

      Wait a minute…. Dixie Chicks? Metal? I declare shenanigans…

    • Havok Saunders says:

      @ peterocc

“though I added that last one despite assurances from my source that they would not likely be in this edition.”

      Meh…

Though Metal isn’t my favorite kind of music I’d say that a whole Metal album is a bad idea. DLC is taking over this kind of thing.

The Aerosmith and 80’s discs for GH were crap.

I say rather then spend all the time and money to one kind of genre, try to really give us a great game and I’ll buy the songs I want.

    • Havok Saunders says:

Rock the 80s could have been an awesome GH game. Unfortunately, the songs were either covers or complete crap.

      “Metal”
      “Korn, Slayer, Slipknot”

      Seriously?
Please tell me it’s fiction friday.

    • Jordan says:

Yay, this had to happen eventually and I’m keen!

    • DolmenRage says:

Well, I wouldn’t really call Korn, Slayer and Slipknot “metal”.

    • Legendary Hooligan says:

omg if this happens… omg…. i would so love to play KoRn and Slipknot… some wicked s*** there. although Slipknot has 9 members… how they gonna work that? (hypothetically)

@ dolmen: Slipknot and Korn are totally metal. Thrash/Hardcore/Nu/Grunge metal, but definitely metal.

    • bt182 says:

sure black sabbath is good but splipknot and korn they are s*** i would not buy that crap

    • iBrick says:

I was excited about the new “metal” game until I saw the bands… It’s things like this that make me wish the game itself was more customizable, and that you just had to purchase one game and had a vast online library to pick songs from.
