This one comes from SGC member Artemis, who wants to help shave a few precious seconds off of your fastest speed run in EA’s first-person platformer.
Do you love Mirror’s Edge? Well we here at Sarcastic Gamer are knee deep in Faith’s leaps of faith and to help you Parkour your ass of in style, a helpful member of our Community has put together a helpful guide to keep you alive and be the fastest mofo on your friends’ list.
Check it out, after the jump.
Momentum
Momentum is the speed at which you move. It increases the longer you run and is maintained through actions like running and jumping. As in life, momentum can be gained or lost by performing certain actions. Climbing a tall wall or making a hard landing can strip you of all your momentum, while sliding under objects (i.e. pipes, raised boxes, etc.) and turning too sharply can reduce your speed a bit. The best way to gauge the success of your maneuvers is to check your top speed at the bottom right corner of your screen. Faith’s normal top speed is around 24 KM/H, a zip line can give you up to 50KM/H, and a simple jump can boost you to 28KM/H for a short time.
Precision
You need to make every maneuver with military precision. A jump executed half a second too soon or too late can cost you up to 5 seconds. Perfecting your jumps and slides takes practice and patience.
Alternate Routes
Always look for an alternate route. This does not always mean a completely new direction, as there are often different ways to get around an obstacle. Instead of climbing a wall, which can slow you down, look for possible spring boards or opportunities to wall run, turn and jump to your goal.
Techniques
Techniques range from very basic (coil jumping) to quite difficult (double wall run with a jump). Mastery of every technique in Mirror’s Edge is KEY to getting three stars in time trial mode.
Coil Jumping
Coil jumping is essential to most jumps that require you to clear a box, ledge or railing. Coil jump by tapping LT (R2 for PS3 owners) while in the air. If done successfully, Faith will lift her legs, which will allow her to jump higher and farther. Remember, it’s faster to jump over a stair rail than it is to climb over it.
Double jumping, though very difficult to get correct, can save you whole seconds on a jump. The first step is to coil your legs (hold LT) while in the air. Then, release the button just before you hit the ground, and press LB (L1 on the PS3 controller) as Faith’s legs land. If done correctly, you will double jump with the momentum of your last jump.
Skill Roll
Skill rolls allow you to jump long distances without taking damage from the landing. This vitally important maneuver is performed by holding LT right before Faith hits the ground. It might sound simple to execute, but, like everything else, it takes a bit of practice to perfect. The only con is that Faith will lose a lot of speed. However, it is far more favorable to lose some speed than to lose ALL of you momentum on a hard landing.
