Gears 2 knocked off most played… by Halo 3 and apathy?

Boy, that didn’t take long.  After enjoying an incredible 2 weeks atop the Xbox Live “Most played” list, Gears 2 has been knocked the f*** out by Bungie’s Halo Jesus.  I can’t believe it.  I am stunned.  I just called my mom in Tennessee and she couldn’t believe it either.

That’s all she wrote folks.  Doctor Doc is declaring Gears of War 2 dead!

Sorry for the melodramatic opening there, but the reaction in both the Halo 3 and Gears communities over this “news” is about the silliest thing I’ve seen since my mother-in-law pulled her “turkey” out of the oven last week.

While I don’t care much at all about either game, and find this “news” to be nothing of the sort, I can’t help but feel like the guy who figures out the ending of the movie in the first 3 minutes.  I kinda felt like this was happening, just by watching you guys on my friends list.

First off, there’s nothing WRONG with Gears of War 2.  The game looks great and plays great, but at the end of the day, or at least at the end of my 2 hours of play, it was Gears of War with a 2 after it.  Being unseated by the most dominant game in the Xbox library isn’t a nail in the coffin, and I don’t mean to insinuate that, but I notice so few people on my friends list playing Gears 2 that I was wondering last night…

What the hell happened?

I feel like I just showed up at a party to find out they ran out of beer.  Last night, no one on my friends list was playing.  Out of 100 people ZERO were playing Gears 2.  Fluke?  Probably, but it’s a stark change from just a week ago, AND a startling contrast to the scenario after the first Gears invaded our homes.

Do you guys think Gears 2 is everything you expected it to be?  Why aren’t you playing it enough?  Is it because you have so many OTHER games that you, like me, are just spreading your time around?

I’m not looking to slam the game, as that would be foolish and just plain idiotic based both on the reviews of the game and its still-wild popularity.  But I have noticed my friends, even those who were super-hyped about Gears 2, playing their old standby games again already.

Thoughts?

Now maybe people will stop inviting me to play G2 *heres to hoping*

I guess it just shows how dedicated bungie’s fans are and that over a year later Halo3 is still fun for them.

I’m taking my time playing though Gears 2 with one of my friends and he can only play certain night of the week. I been playing a ton of Left 4 Dead.

  • I’m too busy playing RRoD to enjoy it :)

My xbox is shipping out today, so hopefully I’ll have it mid next week, then I’m back on Gears2. Doc, if you’re feeling lonely and none of your friends want to play with you anymore I’ll dig out your gamertag from the forums and send you an invite

Problem was/is that finding a ranked match takes way too long and it get boring rather quickly playing bots in a private match. The patch helped but its still nowhere near as quick and easy to find matches like in the 1st gears.

I’ve stopped playing mostly because the multiplayer is still buggy. In my experience, the lag is killing the game. Out of the last 4 matches I played only 1 was playable because of the lag.

I love the game and would play it, but because of the terrible matchmaking I will probably play a bunch over system link… and that’s about it. Unless my friends are playing, but like Doc, most of them have moved on… not all, but most.

^ that’s what I’m playing too. I think it was a bit overhyped, I’m getting the enjoyment that I thought I would get out of RROD, even though it’s a dramatic enough name. I’ll be playing it till probably well after christmas.

That was @SaintMantooth by the by

  • I see… I (the “PS3 Guy”) start playing Gears 2 and everybody bolts… guys… if you KNEW me, you’d KNOW that I’m not there for multiplayer anyway… it’s safe to come back. I feel bad for Cliffy B. Play his game. Cliffy B thinks you should, and he’s NEVER wrong… except when it comes to picking out realistic looking veneers.

  • MagusGamer says:

Well, I’m not playing it right now because I’ve finished the single player, and I’ve moved back to Fallout 3. I’d really like to play more, but like you said, many of the people on my friends list aren’t playing it anymore. If we were to get a group going for something like Horde, I’d put the disk back in the drive.

Oh come on. I got RROD like two days before this game came out, and I planned to get it on launch day. Now I’ve got my Xbox back I have the game and ABSOLUTELY NO-ONE GIVES A CRAP ABOUT IT ANYMORE. What the hell is going on?! It is easily the best game I have ever played, so why the onpopularity?

  • DeathByWaffle says:

Doc if you need someone to play with don’t be afraid to ask :D .

One of the reasons I don’t play it as much is because the achievements. The achievements in the first game were all difficult on some level, and made you try new things (100 headshots, 100 sniper kills, 100 boomshot kills, ect.) Now they are all really easy and just not fun to do, giving me no reason to go back and try new things.

  • Doc says:

Thanks Waffle boy I will look you up after I finish Mirror’s Edge… and Fallout 3.
    And Fable 2
    And Far Cry 2

Talk to you in February. lol

As mentioned above, the matchmaking in GOW2 is horrific. I can find a match in Halo 3 in about 45 seconds, not much waiting. Why didn’t EPIC fix the matchmaking in the last patch update ?

Finally, I just think Halo 3 is a better multiplayer game and it has a very large group of dedicated fans, myself included. You’ll see Halo 3 in and out of the top XBL title, but its longevity in the top 3 is what sets it apart. Great post Doc !

  • McChiken says:

Mamma said knock you out! There goes Halo 3 king of Online games.

  • Apex8 says:

slow matchmaking, thats all it is, if epic fixes it im williing to bet gears 2 will be back with a vengeance and hey im still playing it

  • DeathByWaffle says:

Damn, even Doc is calling me Waffleboy now?

Well see you in a while then. I (stupidly) bought Fable 2 also so maybe it won’t be so long :D .

  • Ch1cken X says:

There are just too many other games out there right now. I still haven’t finished COD:WaW, Fallout 3, or a slew of other games. ( I haven’t even started Endwar, Mirror’s Edge, etc…) I will go back to it, but right now, I’ve got too much on my plate.

  • Cole Train says:

Matchmaking is terrible, period. I’ve played alot of Campaign and Horde, but I have been totally unable to play even a single other gametype. I wait for 5 or 10 minutes to find a match.. and cancel. It’s really quite bad!! Shame, EPIC! That you would allow such a great game to die because of such horrendous matchmaking.
