This isn’t the year of the PS3.

November 13th, 2008 at 11:08 am · 103 Comments

Hype, hype, hype.  Oh how I hate to get caught up in your backwash.  Earlier this year, pseudo-journalists around the Internets were proclaiming that “This was the year of the PS3.” They attempted to buoy their opinions on the backs of LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, Blu-Ray winning a “war” and the perceived waning of popularity of the Wii and Xbox 360.

Yeah, well, they were all kinds of wrong, cuz the PS3 crapped the bed and hasn’t done jack to step up it’s game.

There, I said it.  More flame baiting, anecdotal observations and the plain truth, after the jump.

So many media outlets went out of their way to fawn over the PS3 and make stupid proclamations.  Here’s a few:

MSNBC, EA, and all the ridiculousness right here.

Look, there’s no two ways around it.  Winning the format war and Metal Gear Solid 4 were THE high points of the year for the PS3.  Say what you want about LittleBigPlanet, but nobody is talking about it at all, despite it’s high praise and innovative community, even if it is destined to be a million seller. Resistance 2′s single player campaign is an critical failure.  Sure the multiplayer has long legs, but people don’t buy PS3 games for the multiplayer component alone.

Instead, the Wii continues on it’s path to madness and the Xbox 360 continues to undercut the PS3′s price, exploiting the Blu-Ray player’s price tag and making it look more and more ridiculously expensive, despite the expanded capabilities of the big shiny black box. Further adding insult to injury, Blu-Ray just hasn’t taken off as it was expected to after winning the format war.

The biggest insult to the PS3 is the continued issues it has with multi-platform games.  Of this year’s crop of games, only GTA IV and Mirror’s Edge have been definitively shown to look better than the much less powerful Xbox 360.  Fallout 3 and Bioshock both embarrassed PS3 owners with it’s poor performance and less than Xbox 360 graphics.  It’s a shame.

As a result, Xbox 360′s, the main PS3 competition, has taken off on the success of Fable 2, Left 4 Dead and Gears of War 2, while the PS3 sales remain flat. What can the PS3 do?  Who knows.  I’m not the guy you should be asking.  I’m just canary in the coal mine calling out all the so-called “experts” who proclaimed that 2008 would be the PS3′s year. Let me tell you that it surely is not.

Better luck next year?

    @SuperMario:
What does 360 have which innovate? seriously… NOTHING new.

  • Zen

No need for name calling Mr. editor. It’s fine of course to have opinions, but this looks pretty childish in the way it was written, not to mention some of your comments.

  • son_of_games ^_^

oh no no no, Lono having an opinion doesn’t make you a fanboy. That’s fine. Heck, I hate HOME and I think it’s crap but it’s my opinion. However, I don’t parade around my opinion as a fact as you love to do. You’re a sheep alright. You apparently hang out with those same fanboys that hang around N4G all day.

Anyway, I won’t post nor care to read anymore the responses. It’s nice that you’re went full monty on your fanboyism. Really it’s cool. Really it’s hard to decipher when people try to be coy about it, but I’ll give you credit for being really honest about it. Good job.

    ^_^

    @supermario290
really? so 360 has done that too? all game systems are great. Look in the mirror, you’ll realize that.

  • Blackswordsman

I love how everyone is getting angry at Lono, sure his opinion is irksome sometimes, but hey thats just the way he is.

Its not like he is going to change your opinion (or indeed his own), so why the anger? Plus he is right on most points.

  • http://www.sarcasticgamer.com Lono

I dare anyone to look at what I’ve written and still call me an Xbox 360 fanboy…

@son of games: I’m a fanboy because I “parade my opinion around as fact?” Wha…?

Here’s an idea, go get a dictionary. Look up fanboy in it. Then hit yourself in the face with the dictionary.

  • John

It definitely isn’t the year for Sony… but lets be honest here: It’s boohoo as well for the xbox360. $199 pricing still hasn’t brought it anywhere near Wii Sales. I l laugh at all the 360 fanbois who need to give themselves and their righteous dictionaries a slap in their own faces.

    Sad but true.

@Lono oh yeah … don’t even pretend. It’s written all over your e like an inmate’s pearl necklace on your face.

  • Majik

By what metric is “year of the playatation guaged?” Is it sales? If it is then sony has the upper hand there. Is it exclusives? If it is then they are about neck and neck. For every 360 exclusive there is a sony exclusive. Gears may give the 360 an edge but other than that nothing really stands out.

Also its hard to say the 360′s success has taken off because of the three titles you mentioned because not enough time has passed to make that judgment.

  • http://www.sarcasticgamer.com Lono

Calling me a fanboy is the last refuge of people that don’t want to admit that I’m right.

  • NoneOfYourBusiness

    Slow day Lono? lol

A good flame bait topic to scramble the fanboys is healthy for a website.

On that note, I own a PS3 and PC, Im happy, and you cant take that away from me.

  • John

only fanbois flame other fanbois. Face the facts. I have.

  • jdawg

It wasnt the 360 year either thats why they had to drop the price, Oh and its not going to be the year of alot of 360 user whose 3 year warranties is about to run out. OUch hope you enjoy your new door stop

Come next Feb once Killzone 2 comes out its gonna be the defining moment to why the ps3 is the future

  • Zen

About the “opinion as fact” thing,
Don’t you think it’s a little slanted to say the ps3 sales are flat and it hasn’t done jack, but the PS3 actually won out in terms of worldwide sales in Q2?
And also to say that blu ray hasn’t taken off as expected, even though it has outpaced DVD adoption?

  • http://www.sarcasticgamer.com Lono

Q2 sales don’t make a whole year. But the bottom line is that I’m not saying that this was the 360′s year, or anybody’s year, for that matter, but that the journo’s that speculated that this would be “the ps3′s year” were wrong, in my opinion.

  • Krelith

Bottom line? PS3 has enough content to make it worthwhile. No 360-only owner could possibly argue that games like Uncharted, Ratchet, MGS4 and LBP are “bad” games, therefore they deserve to be played by any avid gamer.

I’m simply content in the fact that I own both systems, I can choose to ignore the junk and embrace the great releases no matter what system they’re on. Bi-console FTW baby.

(and frankly, I wouldn’t be too disappointed if I only had a ps3. That’s how my next-gen life began after all).

  • Strandli

    @Lono:
Did anyone actually take those words literally?
Internet: “This is the PS3 year, AGAIN!”
Customer: “ALRIGHT! About time.” *runs to buy a PS3.

I think it all comes up to what each of the customer wants, what their taste in games and functions are. If you know it’s the PS3 you want, then you buy it, when you have the money.

  • Zen

Well obviously I didn’t mean Q2 sales account for the whole year. What I was pointing out was that the ps3 made a significant jump. Does that make it PS3′s “year”? Nope, But to only show one side of the story does it a disservice.

  • Majik

I agree with Strandli. Its all a matter of taste. I you loved Metal Gear then this was the year of the playstation if you loved gears of war then this was the year of the 360. This argument is too subjective to make any sense. There needs a solid definition of what “year of anything” means for either side to argue their point.

  • GotEmRunnin

wow this thing has really turned into an attack against Lono. The guy is simply stating his opinion with fact. The same some sony fanboys won’t purchase a 360 cuz of RROD. Even though a 360 owner will tell you that RROD is not that bad anymore it’s a fact that RROD is/was a problem and it’s also your opinion as to that being the reason why you won’t purchase a 360.

Fact of the matter is this as I’ve states in my previous post. Sony has done nothing to retake it’s dominate postion in gaming with the exception of talking about what they are going to do i.e they haven’t done anything yet. The major games most sony fanboys are looking for don’t even have a solid release date. GOW 3 being the biggest. yet it’s one reason many bought a ps3 so early including me.

No one can say the ps3 is a total failure, but no one and i mean no one here can say sony is giving the ps3 and it’s fanbase total dedication either.

  • http://none Kane

I see a lot of people throwing sales around as if the PS3 was doomed or something, but (I can’t find the link, at work right now) if you search hard enough, you will find that in lifetime sales, the PS3 has sold 1 million + more systems than the 360 has when comparing their timeframes together (eg sales in 22 months)

Look it up, some might be pleasantly suprised while tossing around this “PS3 sales suck compared to 360″ talk.

Lono, I will not resort to calling you a fanboy, but I do see that your experiences with the PS3 has left you bitter at Sony and a little “Haze”d (see what I did there :) )

All I can do is feel sorry that you aren’t getting the same enjoyment (the same sorrow I feel for the 360 haters out there) as I do for I am a gamer first and a politician/PR Console spokesman last.

I have plenty of good games on both systems to warrant both of my purchases and all is good in the hood!

  • http://www.clearlake.uk.com Damian

For “off the shelf” games, I’d find it hard to disagree to an extent. But I wanted a Blu-Ray player too (and am very happy with it for that) – you can still only get a standalone one in the UK for £50 less than a PS3.

The difference for me is that the sort of games I like playing are the sort that the PSN has had in abundance. I got an idea, before both consoles came out, of what Microsoft and Sony were doing with the downloadable stuff and preferred the sound of Sony’s approach. I can stand by that now I’ve seen both. Additionally, I’m one of those people you call “time poor” – I like to do a bit of online gaming but I in no way do enough to justify a subscription to do it.

You’re right in saying that it’s failing to make as much of an impression as it could, partly because of the price tag and partly because the PC architecture of the 360 makes it easy to do a top notch conversion, whereas the PS3 is harder work and the developers have to think it’s worth their time and money putting it in.

I’m still happy with mine though. Even with “on the shelf”, I’ve got LittleBigPlanet, MGS4 and Ratchet & Clank which I couldn’t get on the other one. For sheer number of quality “off the shelf” titles, the 360 does “win” (whatever that means) right now but I’ve only got so much disposable time and income and there’s more than enough on the PS3 (especially with the network stuff, and free online gaming) to make it worthwhile for me. The differential for me was therefore what else it could do. I can see where you’re coming from – if I still had time (or wanted) to be a “hardcore” gamer that could put in tens of hours a week, and I wasn’t bothered about hi-def movies (on disc), the 360 would have probably been the better option.

  • atrimus

Gears 2 is awesome; MGS4 was awesome. Fable 2 was almost awesome, as was Resistance 2. Fallout 3 looks slightly better on the 360 (which is why i got the 360 version); Mirror’s Edge looks slightly better on the PS3 (which is why i’m getting the PS3 version). PS3 Bioshock being < 360′s Bioshock is over-exaggeration to the fullest (it’s definitely not blown out of the water like this article purports). i downloaded the PS3 demo and noticed nothing different. but then again, i didn’t instantly jump up with a magnifying-glass to spot a few shoddy textures or pixels. Too Human sucked about as equally as Haze. PS3 edged 360 in US sales from 1/08 till 9/08; 360 looks to continue to edge PS3 for the rest of the year. Japan loved 360 more than PS3 for a few weeks; they currently like PS3 more. 360 dominates in the UK; PS3 donimates throughout the rest of Europe. 360 is significantly cheaper than PS3, but only to those who don’t know they’ll come out paying exactly the same in the end. PS3 trumped 360 in number of exclusives (LBP, R2, Pacific Rift, Naruto, Valkyria Chronicles, MGS4, WipEout HD and Socom Confrontations) while 360 edged PS3 in quality of exclusives (Gears 2, Fable 2, ToV, Ninja Gaiden 2 and L4D). Live barely trumps PSN in quality, but definitely not in price. Home looks to suck; NXE looks barely serviceable. in the end it hasn’t been the year of Playstation, but it certainly hasn’t been the year of XBox either. both systems are good, which is why i have them. gamers have opinions; fanboys spout nonsensical nonsense and try to push it as fact. these are all my opinions; i do not present them as fact. MOST of them are completely subjective and can be argued against.

from here on i think i’m gonna avoid forums like these, because the fanboys that infest them make gaming distasteful.

  • http://Germany Adriano

The only thing that I’d like to complain about is the following:

Why are there so many people blaming the PS3, as a stand-alone console, for the lack of competitive multi-platform titles? As freaking as it may sound – only because it’s a PS3 it cannot boost the heck out of a DVD. It’s a question that the developers should be asked for. Of course, the PS3 may be difficult to handle, I accept this. But in the same way we must accept the fact of MGS4 being out there, proving the Ps3 is indeed capable of doing amazing things. So, logically, you cant blame the system as itself.

  • Hawkins541

I think the key point everyone should walk away with in this is that whatever console you buy that you enjoy it as much as you can don’t bicker with other fan boys on what is better Ive played all 3 and the 360 is my choice embrace yours

Maybe if people just enjoyed the games and played the Ps3 it would lead its way to the top of the heap in time but if not then it is what it is
and now im going to play my fav the 360 kick some freak a$$ on fallout 3

  • http://djhsecondnature.co.uk djhsecondnature

Whilst I disagree with what Lono has posted, he is entilted to his opinion. Just seems like this is become a little bit of an attack on him unfortunately.

  • profcory

Yeah, I don’t see where people are getting the “Lono is a fanboy” sentiment. Anyone who’s ever bothered to read his other articles would probably discern that he is just opinionated, not biased…

Did everyone just ignore Lono’s comment (#34 of the article)? He wants the PS3 to do well. Why wouldn’t he? Otherwise he bought an expensive brick. And nobody likes expensive bricks.

Personally, I have no opinion on the issue (yet, as I haven’t gotten much personal time in with many of the newest games). I just find Lono’s article to be evidence of his *opinion* not of his “fanboyism.”

  • 911 Gaming

I’m not gonna hate on you for having your own opinion. Everyone is entitled to one, and some of you should have learned that. I agree, this isn’t the “year of the PS3,” like Sony hyped it to be, but it certainly isn’t the “year of the Xbox 360.” Their main problem is that Sony release good games in times when no one will by them, and don’t advertise for the games that are good to come out, because they don’t want to take risks. I’m sure you already know this.
    BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT…
But, I can’t figure out how you can say that Fallout 3 or Bioshock have worse graphics on PS3. They have much better graphics than the Xbox 360 version. Now if, you were comparing Mirror’s Edge or Orange Box, I could see a fair point; but if you had compared a game such as Mercenaries 2, you would have been sadly murdered by how much you failed in your opinion, because although the game [overall] sucks, the 360′s graphics on it are much, MUCH worse. (now I’m sure you’re thinking in your head, “oh, Mercs 2, and what else?! Yeah. That’s right…”)

Now, I too am pissed. I have a $600 [almost useless] brick in my living room. But I have too much going on in my life to deal with that. I have a life. Your career is based on what you do here, mine is elsewhere. So, I don’t care… happy? [I can not believe I actually posted a comment on one of these again... I feel like I'm back in high school]

  • frawlz

Dude.. it took me 10 min to scroll down to the bottom of this conversation.

  • oni

Okay, so, I agree. It was not “The Year of the PS3.” That would suggest some kind of overwhelming dominance over every other gaming console.

It was just a bunch of lame hype that I’ve come to expect from every industry and every company in order to sell their stuff an make money.

Putting that aside, (“That” being all silly console war stuff) I am absolutely 100% satisfied with my PS3. And that’s really what counts in the end.

The 360 and the PS3 are both great systems, and depending on what you want to get out of your gaming system, either choice can be the correct one.

To put it another way, BOTH systems have pros AND cons. There was a large list in this article compiled to prove that it wasn’t the “Year of the PS3,” but an equally long list can be created for the 360.

And yes, I know. No one said it was the year of the 360, and that’s all this article is really saying: it’s not the year of the PS3.

But my point is it doesn’t HAVE to be the year of the PS3 for it to be a good console choice.

  • Prophet

@911 To be fair the author of this post has a very different career outside of this site.

  • http://www.sarcasticgamer.com Doc

For those with torches, may I first say that I know Lono better than anyone here, and I witnessed first-hand his disappointment with Resistance 2… He was genuinely upset that the game wasn’t what he was hoping for. HE SPENT HIS OWN MONEY to buy the game and did not get what he felt was a value.

Secondly, regarding the fanboyism, what do you want? Do you want him to LIE and say how great a year it has been? Do you want him to INVENT a success for a stupid video game console and then celebrate it like it’s the NEW YEAR?

Sarcastic Gamer is not a journalism site, it’s a community where we discuss our opinions, and all are welcome. That includes people that like just about anything.

The problem with that is that you will occasionally, maybe even often, read something you disagree with…. but to throw around that ridiculous word… fanboy…. at everyone who disagrees with your passion for your hunk of plastic and wires…. is in and of itself… blatant fanboyism.

I own a PS3. It’s a 20G. Anyone remember that? All hype, no delivery. I spent the $599 retail, plus $100 to buy someone else’s spot in line at gamestop. Hadn’t had a console in 3 years. I bought it for Lair, who for the uninformed gamer was to be a launch title, as well as Heavenly Sword. One week later I saw Gears 1 and bought a 360. 3 months later came reports of RRODs and I was full steam a gamer again. Only problem, I was still waiting for something to interest me on the PS3. Can’t stand FPS or anything with first person view, so no Resistance, and not thrilled with the goofy gameplay of Motorstorm left me waiting.
By the time Drakes came out, it was soon ackowledged that installs were to be mandatory at 3-5g per game. I have a 20g, and since I bought it, the overstocked 40g added new features such as wireless and reduced the price $200 from what I originally paid. I won’t spend the money on another hard drive to play on a system that should have supported me, and blu-ray spent too much time getting updates to get to the features of HD-DVD, that I just stopped buying movies.
Where does that leave me? With a big black shiny box that I use as a reminder that to me, this was not the year of Sony, and neither will any other year, as I will never trust their hype department again.
Sony needs to worry about treating it’s current customers well, and not about the future. Everyone talks about M$ buying out the exclusives to go multiplatform, but Sony bought out the movie studios to end the format war. They were too worried about conquering the movie industry that they put gaming second, not worrying about helping the devs take advantage of their complicated system. The PS3 is better hardware, and I don’t believe anyone can argue that. If properly coded for (MGS4, even though I only watched played, as I never played the others) the results can be amazing. To ask developers to shift from code that works on PC, 360, Wii, and PS2 optimized for GPUS, and then try to optimize for CPU instead is insane unless there is a reward for doing so (selling more copies, larger attach rate, larger fan base). If this Xmas doesn’t see BDs sales increase, look for studios to drop support (too costly to print extra sell through copies on both DVD and BD, ie: in store copies at BB and Wal-mart). If Sony loses BD support, look for them to possibly abandon losses on the PS3 and release a much cheaper and more conventionally base GPU console to replace what will then be known as a failure.

  • Sieruken

Buy both systems and shut the funk up already. My PS3 rocks, My xbox 360 Rocks, I usually go with the PS3 version of multi-platform games recently, such as Dead Space (just go out & buy it) and Force Unleased for some minor differences like vsync issues (tearing) and slightly lower res textures in some cases on the 360. I believe we are starting to see some limitations of the 360 where features have yet to be utilized and are just being understood by a few developers for the ps3.

That of course won’t stop me from a 5 hour game session on gears 2 horde more of course. Each system has it’s strong points; the 360 being market saturation as all of our friends own one and the brilliant idea of including a gaming headset albeit a terrible one in every system thus further making the online “live” feeling possible by easily communicating with the person you just knifed in COD4 instead of just running around in silence.

However, I know my PS3 is a higher end machine; It’s a network media center (yeah who cares) but blueray’s are wild. The system is reliable, it’s quite, has a higher potential in gaming performance and in same cases, already realized such as MGS4, Uncharted, etc.. and it will continue to expand it’s capabilities.

I am amazed by how many features and forward thinking ideas have been implemented through constant updates to the Ps3. I can honestly say it feels like I made an investment in high end equipment which upgrades itself. Something I cannot say about any other gadgetry I own. Any of you who do not own a PS3 would really enjoy it if and when you do purchase one for the media capabilities alone.

We can say anything we want to about the current state of our consoles, however I believe had Sony simply included a headset with their system from the beginning, the playing field would have been leveled, because great gaming experiences is what makes great games…just look at the funky little cute but nasty looking Wii, it’s amazing because it’s about creating experiences. The 360 marketing strategy is about people connectting, live, etc.etc. Something they do right, because of a $2.00 headset. So much so, they are able to loose 1.1 billion in repairs and a good percentage of their market to the competition because of faulty hardware but still manage to dominate in sales. I personally know and play with 9 people online 6 of which have lost their xbox’s to RROD, 2 of those 6 had it happen multiple times which truly is absurd. My box is super ventilated and I purchased it off ebay purposely so I know it had good use and survived and manf. defects and thus works perfectly.

Point being…… Your missing out if you have only one system and if your missing out then your opinions are bias, so again buy both systems and shut the funk up already.

Will it be another.. nearly year for sony?

  • GldnBOY

The PS3 is not going to dominate like the PS2 did but mark my words next year this thread will be much different as last year it was different. We can all say that the PS3 is junk but it’s not and time will tell. Sony has made a lot of mistakes but we are 2 years into this thing. Do any of you remember what the PS2 was like in early 2002? Because that is the comparison you have to make. As for the Year of the PS3 thing what did you think the Sony guys would say….”this year will be better than 2007 but it won’t blow your socks off”….I mean come on…PR is PR and these guys get paid to BS…just the the MS goons that make bold statements like we are outperforming PS3 by 2 to 1 in NPD but you actually have to know calculus to figure out how MS came to this conclusion.

One last thing the reason I still think this is the year of the PS3 and next year will be to is that the PS3 momentum has been significant this year (it had to catch up so it had room to improve) and I feel it will be significant next year. MS had a great year but have they really improved on last year? NXE is nice but beyond some more excellent game releases and price drops what have they done? As for Ninty’s money printing machine what can one say?

Time will tell and all the comments won’t change anything. I just hope Lono will reverse his position when it does happen because Sony has a history of sneaking up on the market.

  • Hablabla

I’ll have to agree. Even as a fan of Sony (although they are a little or a lot pricey) I must say this is not the year of the PS3, BUT it is the year the PS3 did begin to pick up steam AND it outsold the 360 by a small margin most of the year with less AAA games and a higher price point. Maybe next year, hopefully with a price drop around the time God of War 3 comes out and maybe the Team Ico game will come out.

  • jahosive

    @GldnBOY
Here’s the NPD figures from their site:
    Here’s the score:

    PlayStation 2 – 136K
    PlayStation 3 – 190K
    PSP – 193K
    Xbox 360 – 371K
    Wii – 803K
    Nintendo DS – 491K

That is 1.95% more than PS3 sales in the month of October. Where do you need calc?

I believe the point is that Sony has promised and promised that the competition is nothing to worry about. They focus on gamers first. I cannot believe this. If so, support would have been given to third party devs, dev kits would have been free from the start and they would have made a more dev friendly machine. I know, the point is that they have more advance hardware. They have the almighty media machine. That’s just it though, it is a great media machine, and it is great hardware, and much better than BOTH of it’s comeptitors, but it has very little support, more complicated procedures to take advantage of said hardware, and more than anything, does not play friendly with multi-platform coding, and I don’t just mean for the 360, I mean for the PC and Wii also. Devs that aren’t tied to one console want to get the most out of their development time, and when the code for one machine takes as long as the code for three, who do you think the multi are going to support, not to mention the sales if provided for all three completely decimate the sales of the one.
As I stated earlier, if you do not see BD sales take off this holiday, look for some major players to stop producing on both (just as what happened with LD), and at that point, console sales will continue to stagnate, with slight spikes around K2 and F13Versus (F13 in Japan, but not US), and then you better hope GOW III is on schedule, cause if not, you may be looking at the next Dreamcast.

  • jahosive

BTW, the major players on both meant movie studios on both DVD and BD.

  • http://n4g.com sarcastic gamer sucks

  • Shendow

Sorry but PS3 sales are going up thanks to LBP, R2, BioShock and even Mirror’s Edge. ME has already got a 10 out of 10 for PS3, which shows PS3 is got more power the 260 and only problems that developers have is the Bluray, its a new thing an it will take time to get the full power out of it and it seems like people are to dumb to understand that and oh yes 360 is getting Bluray if Sony lets them an it will only be use for movies an not your games.

Keep in mind all the great idea’s that PS3 had to start with are showing up on 360 because MS can’t come up with their own idea’s (Their own LBP game, Intstalling a game and more to come)

The only freaking reason the ps3 isnt doing well in comparison to the 360 is the price point………….

Sony didn’t expect Microsoft to drop the price this year they got caught with their pants off but if you look at it the other way around sony was getting a lot of attention that is the reason the 360 dropped its price.

Right now you can buy 2 360s in the price of one ps3 this is the problem.I don’t know weather Sony will drop its price this year or will choose to limp through this year its their decision but still Sony is not doing that bad as it is perceived.

every one forgets it did come out a year after the 360 and considering that its doing pretty well when we look at it from the life cycle point of view.

When we talk about winner I think the Wii won this race a year back whle the second position is still up for grabs, too close to call as of yet.

BTW IN my opinion this article suxs balls :P

Lono i see what your saying. you got alot of haters trying to prove your point aswel. PS3 onwers lets not get defensive becuase you all bought a PS3 and you’ve been playing the same games for about 6 months now. Yeah its a good system yeah its over price and yes it is catching up to the 360. Now that being said. Sony gives alot of false promises just to boost sales and leave you all wondering now why did i fall for that in the first place. just like every cosnole all have they’re pros and cons.

Good article i’d say, dont say we’re gonna blow you away this year and get your balls cut off at E3 and every other gaming expo show that follows.

I’ll agree that 2008 isn’t the year of the PS3 as many expected. However, you missed a lot of things.

The PS3 for all intensive purposes HAS outsold the 360 worldwide this year. In fact, until October’s NPDs came in, the PS3 had outsold the 360 in the US for 2008, which has traditionally been its weakest territory. It wasn’t until Microsoft took drastic measures and sold the 360 at half the price of the PS3 that 360 sales picked up again.

The PS3 produced 2 gems this year with LBP and MGS4 – the first 90%+ PS3 exclusives. Both Microsoft and Nintendo could only put out 1, Gears 2 and SSBB respectively. Not to mention other diamonds in the rough, like R2, Motorstorm, Valkyria, etc. MGS4 has sold 4 million copies and was a huge success, while R2 and LBP had moderate success for a user base half the size of the 360′s(in the US).

You also mention ME and GTA4 being the only instance of better multiplats when you can look at any review aggregate and see there’s countless others(DMC4, Guitar Hero WT, etc). Notably, Madden 09 was better on the PS3, an accomplishment after 08′s 30 FPS PS3 VS 60 FPS 360 debacle.

And how is Resistance 2 ugly? Its got some of the greatest set pieces I’ve seen since MGS4.

Also – can I borrow your crystal ball? I know you looked into the future to see that L4D would be a huge success next week, and I need to borrow it.

It is definitly the year of the PS3! You patriotic american cretins are just worshipping your american patriotic console, which was build in China (!) for little amount a.k.a. quality which you all can witness if you get a RRoD…

And on the software-side PS3-owners are far more happy… more exclusives which are worth to play, some multiplatform-titles which are really worth to buy – more games than ever and so little time to play them all…

    Year of 360? Fable 2 an GOW2
    PS3, Resistance 2, LBP, MGS4.

Seems like PS3 has more bigger games only for their system then 360, some games can’t count for 360 only if their on PC to.

Wow. You guys are SO passionate. The PS3 doesn’t give a rats booty about you, why would you write more than 100 words (seriously, you guys are typing short stories as you angrily slam the keyboard, a la ‘Angry German Kid’) defending a MACHINE. Nobody insulted your mother, family, or you, but a MACHINE.

    Grow up.

    So…….

When’s this going up on N4G?

So please no more ” Xbox 360 is cheaper”.

Of course a VW Golf is cheaper than a Ferrari but you don´t get the same.

You could get a Xbox 360 for 200 $ but you will miss XBL , Downloads (one week) and MP. So you have to spend at least 350 $
