Supreme Commander 2: Brought to us by Square Enix?!

Whether you love Supreme Commander or hate it, no RTS fan can deny that its massive scale and uber zoom in-and-out ability changed how a lot of gamers judge the newest generation of real time strategy games. Resting comfortably among my favorite strategy games of all time, I have been itching for even the smallest tidbit of info to be released concerning Supreme Commander 2. What I was not expecting to hear was that the same crew who brought us titles like Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger would be involved in crafting the new SupCom.

Find out more about Supreme Commander 2 and Square Enix after the jump!

No word yet on which platforms Supreme Commander 2 will be available on, but here’s hoping that this RTS stays where it belongs, on PC only. A release date and game info are also TBA. What we DO know is that Square Enix announced yesterday that they have formed a strategic partnership with Gas Powered Games to work on the new SupCom. It what capacity exactly, we still don’t know.

Of all the titans I could have imagined working together on the new Supreme Commander, I have to say Square Enix never once came to mind. Square Enix president Yoichi Wada did acknowledge that Japan was no longer the king of the gaming industry back October, losing a lot of ground to the growing US and European markets. So perhaps this is just one of the ways Square Enix plans to branch out and grab a larger portion of Western consumers.

Still though, the guys who make Final Fantasy are gonna help make Supreme Commander 2? I’m not sure whether this is the greatest news ever or a recipe for disaster. Will my ACU now carry a sword three times its size? What say you all? Is it good or bad that Square Enix is involved?

i reckon its a good thing, near enough every game square enix has produced has been extremely good (ffx the exception) so I think this game will be a success

Ridiculousness aside, Square Enix makes excellent games. This is a recipe for awesome.

While it is surprising, don’t forget that Square do make the mech fighting series “Front Mission” which is popular in Japan.

As long as Square are smart enough just to publish it and not try to control the development process, this should be fine. GPG get a big-name console publisher with good access to the japanese market, while SquareEnix get an excellent western developer and an RTS franchise that’s easily the equal of C&C or Starcraft.

But if they try to make it more of a “Squaresoft” style game it will undoubtably suck.
