Electronic Arts revealed yesterday that it would be releasing 14 “premium upgrade packs” for its third-person survival horror romp, “Dead Space.” Though most of the content will be available to both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners, each platform will get two console-exclusive packs. The extra content, which ranges from $1 to $4, will be available to 360 owners and European PS3 gamers on Nov. 13, while the rest of Sony nation has to wait until Nov. 20.
According to EA’s press release, the DLC will “provide the game hero, Isaac Clarke, an everyday systems engineer, with the ultimate Necromorph-dismembering equipment in his fight for survival aboard the space-traveling USG Ishimura.” Does that mean a razor-sharp boomerang or mammoth pair of scissors for everyone?
Unfortunately, no it does not. “Ultimate Necromorph-dismembering equipment” is apparently EA speak for weapon skins and upgraded suits. There will be some weapon modifications, such as the Steam Punk Force Gun and “faster-firing” Plasma Cutter, but Isaac won’t have to make room in his inventory for any new tools.
I thoroughly enjoyed “Dead Space,” but there is nothing in these premium packs that would entice me to open my wallet. “Flame graphics for the Flamethrower and Pulse Rifle” sound pretty sweet, but I rather take my $1 outside and throw it in a garbage can. Seriously, are people willing to shell out some greenbacks to change the look of some in-game weapons? Please don’t answer that.
EA, in my opinion, chose a particularly bad time to release this DLC. People generally struggle with time management during the holiday gaming glut. Some plow through games so they can move on to the next hot title, while others never find the time to enjoy the latest releases. I imagine that most “Dead Space” fans have already completed the game, and thus moved on to other titles. For instance, I have already beaten the game twice and fully upgraded everything in Isaac’s arsenal. Therefore, I feel absolutely no need to dismember any more Necromorphs in the near future. There are sure to be some people who haven’t played the game yet, but I imagine that many of them are waiting for the software storm to pass. Regardless, EA clearly sees very little risk in releasing this content, as it was probably quite cheap to produce.
I could ramble on for pages, but I want to hear what you have to say SGC. Were you excited by the DLC announcement? Are you planning on purchasing any new content for “Dead Space”? If not, why? Hit up the forums or share your thoughts in the comments section below.

It’s absolutely ludicris to think that EA can get away with releasing this…and charging money for it! Essentially they are selling “themes” for Isaac in Dead Space. Is this what we should come to expect from all future DLC? In no way does this DLC enhance the game. It’s complete and uter bull$#!t and I’m tired of the game complanies microtransactioning everything. They are trying to nickle and dime us to hell because they know there is some idiot out there that is going to buy this garbage just “because it looks cool.”
It is only $1.00 , I agree that it is stupid DLC but it is a $1.00.
Think about how many terible themes are on XBL for more than that and you know EA is going after some of that cash. Havok points out how easy it was to make this DLC, so why not turn a knob and a few mouse clicks (2) bam !! Cheap DLC to make a profit
well I honestly do feel the need to at least purchase the plasma cutter pack.
I want to play it a second time so I can upgrade all of my weapons, I might as well wait for this to come up and enjoy my second play through.
Yes I’m only making the problem bigger, but I really loved Dead Space, and I want a good sequel, so if this helps it then so be it. Plus it sucks that Dead Space sold a lot less copies then other S*** games out there. DLC is the only way for EA to make up for development.
I dont know guys, I usually disagree with DLC, but this once Im going for it, DeadSpace was an awesome experience, and I want more from it.
I totally agree that this is waste of time for EA. I also have finished the game twice and upgraded all of my weps. I currently playin Fallout3 and I have Fable2 and Silent Hill:Homecoming unopened and left 4 dead and the last remnant havent even released yet. I see no need for this DLC cause Im not goin back to Dead Space anytime soon.
Waste of EA’s time and mine.
In the past I’ve enjoyed pretty much all the DLC for the games I own, and will definitely buy some of the Dead Space stuff tomorrow, it’s already available now I see. It’s such a small amount of money and if it makes the equipment look sexy then great, if it doesn’t then no worries.
