Sega Genesis/Megadrive Releases: 1999-2008

Every ten years I publish the popular Sega Genesis/Megadrive release calendar, and it just so happens that today is the day we’re due for a new one. Ten years ago, we had one game on the schedule (Beggar Prince), and this time we have exactly one new game, so hit the jump for the Genesis/Megadrive releases for the years 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008.

The Legend of Wukong (Christmas 2008)

Yes, that’s right! It appears my decade release calendar was not in vain, as the Gametec developed title is releasing this Christmas.

Legend of Wukong is a vibrant, new role playing adventure game for use with Sega Genesis and Sega Megadrive videogame systems as well as all compatible systems. Scheduled for release in time for Christmas, 2008, it will mark the second commercial game release for the Sega Genesis in the United States since 1998 (the first being our own Beggar Prince).

Right, get out your Christmas list and let’s make a few changes. Firstly, cross of that pony you’ve always wanted…yes, and Dead Space, Prince of Persia, Fallout 3, Fable 2 and Far Cry 2, and the arts and crafts set. Good, now just grab a pen and write the following:

“Dear Santa,

For this Christmas I want a copy of Legend of Wukong for the Sega Genesis/Megadrive. It would be weely weely good and fun and good and fun and I want to play it with my brother and it is really good cos he said so and I will leave you cookies and milk so that you can deliver presents to everyone and I’m on your good list because I’ve been weely good and Mom says that you will give me presents.

Also: please don’t land your reindeer on our roof, as it’s currently suffering from some structural damage and is quite temperamental, instead please use the local council provided car parking space to the right of the house. Failure to abide by these rules may result in a fine.

Love,

Jimmy

So what do you think of releasing games on old platforms? Is it just alienating the mass market, or is it the perfect route to nostalgic heaven? Let us know in the comment box.

I wouldn’t mind a Donkey Kong Country 4 for the SNES. Or a Uniracers sequel? Oh wait… Rare and Nintendo aren’t together anymore, so no new DKC for me I guess.

    • You know, the game actually looks good. If I had a Genesis, I’d probably go out and buy it, if only to encourage the effort.

What the hell?! Seriously, there’s nothing wrong with releasing games on dead systems, but…. wait a minute, everything is wrong with releasing games on dead systems. Why the hell would anyone want to buy this? Seriously people, this game isn’t going to sell one copy. It’s ridiculous.

I say skip the retail release on the Genesis and sell the game on Live Arcade or the PSN. Hell, they can even pretend the game is an old school Genesis classic and sell it on Virtual Console.

Um, is it Friday already? Shouldn’t this go in broken news?

      @ T3mpus Fugit
I may buy this game purely to prove you wrong… :) I don’t have a Genesis, but I’ll get one anyway…
It will sell some copies, but obviously the majority sales will be from diehard Genesis fans…

it coulnd’t be that bad,I mean some of the best games I remember are from the ps1 and Snes era,it just depends on how they make it.

Don’t forget: While they did release a pretty small print run for Beggar Prince, it did sell out two or three times. There’s definitely an interest. It would probably be smarter to release it as a downloadable game, but hey. It doesn’t cost a whole lot to make, and they don’t have to waste time on porting it. Quick and easy cash, as people are just going to buy it for the novelty value of a genesis game in ‘08.
I know a few people wanted Capcom to put out a collectable MM9 NES cart as a little bonus or what have you, they could sell it like this on the side if they did decide to port it to a newer system.
