Which Racing game will you buy this Christmas?

October 9th, 2008 at 10:00 am · 8 Comments

It’s been a fair amount of time since I last went out and picked up a big name racing title. This time around, not only am I presented with 3 big name racing titles, but I find myself struggling to pick between three different platforms to play them. Do I go with the PC, my home turf? Do I go with the PS3? Or do I go with the PSP, which has been my main racing platform of late?

Most importantly, are all three of the upcoming big name racing titles even worth owning?

Find out which two racing titles have kicked my hype meter into overdrive and which one has all the appeal of an old Pinto after the jump!

While replay-ability is often a major factor for me in the games I choose to play and champion, for racing games it is vital. The mark of  truly great racing title is its ability to keep you coming back for more like a dog who’s being handed bacon. The game has to have that special “something” to keep me coming back. Every successful racing franchise has its own unique “flavor” that evolves over time, which is both a blessing and a curse. Stay true to what the fans love about the franchise while still delivering a fresh experience and you’ve got a cash cow. Become lazy and start releasing substandard titles whose only claim to fame is the name on the box and you push gamers away to greener pastures.

That said, lets get right down to it.

#1 Midnight Club: Los Angeles

Release Date: October 20th

I have been a huge fan of the Midnight Club series since the first Midnight Club (Street Racing) hit the PS2 way back in 2000. Midnight Club II found its way to my PC and though not as good as I would have hoped, it still had enough semi-arcade style racing madness to keep me hooked. Midnight Club 3 (Dub Edition) is the game that truly hooked me though. Sure the PSP version had its issues, but I still go for a drive at least once a week, even after all this time.

I have to admit I am psyched about Midnight Club: Los Angeles. Rockstar’s iconic open world setup, a spicy take on the RAGE engine (which powered GTAIV), a ludicrously big car customization mode, an actual storyline, and all the blistering arcade-style speed you can handle. All of the initial previews have been good and the videos look pretty sweet too.

I’m going to have to go with the PSP for Midnight Club: LA Remix. I really need a great new racing game to make me feel cool as I ride the bus to work.

As a 360 only gamer, NFS: Undercover and Midnight Club: LA seem very interesting. Althought I know handling will be very different here, I didn’t appreciate Rockstar’s handling in GTAIV. I’m open to renting and trying first though. Never really got into the series.

From the previews I’ve read, many critics say that Undercover feels like Most Wanted, which I love and am currently playing, stupid Razor Callahan. At any rate, the Rockstar’s visuals and Mario Kart style Race modes are really making this a hard decision. I’ll try my favorite sites to review both and let me know which one to buy. Get on it, Doc!

For my racing game needs I need to see an excellent online experience, for most people this is true of most genre of games, but for me its vital for racing games. The reason I bought a 360 was because of all the hype my friends were giving PGR3 and I got a PS3 because of GT5P. PGR3 online kicked ass. The number of hours spent racing online on that were worth the console purchase alone, then Forza 2 came along and ripped up the rule book for online racing and set the standard for me. GT5P on the other hand was a big let down….

I’ve tried pretty much most of the racing games that have come out in the last few years from the Race Driver series, Colin McRae, NFS, PGR, Forza, even the diabolical Juiced 2 HIN & Ridge Racer games. I like my racing games to be borderline arcadey through to realistic, but I’m a true sucker for racing so I’ll probably end up getting them all. The best one will be the one that is most fun tearing it up against other people on.

I´m going to buy Shaun White Snowboarding(for 360) :) I just can´t get through the winter without a good snowboardgame, although Midnight Club is quite interesting, too!

Midnight Club: LA ALL THE WAY!

NFS has been on the downward spiral since it’s masterpiece, Need For Speed Underground 2.

I don’t remember exactly how long my full length beard grew playing that game, before I finally decided it was time to shower.
