With the big Bioware announcement coming down revealing another Star Wars MMO (Star Wars: The Old Republic) I was suddenly struck with a revelation.
I really don’t think I care anymore.
Star Wars was the first movie that truly captured my imagination. I collected the action figures, I had all the ships. Once, during a fight, I even split my sister’s lip with the Millennium Falcon. Stitches!
But as time drags on and game after game tries (unsuccessfully) to capture my imagination again, I’m wondering if I am alone here. I mean plenty of people do GENUINELY seem excited about the latest announcement, but then again a lot of people were excited about Galaxies too, and I think that game’s being hosted on a 386 in George Lucas’ basement now.
Before some of you bury me in Jedi diatribe, please keep in mind that I am not trying to rile up the fanboys here, but I am wondering if any of you feel the same way. Thoughts?

I really enjoyed Forced Unleashed despite the glitches.
The Clone Wars series is decently entertaining.
Didn’t watch the Clone wars movie, but I probably will eventually.
And if TOR is anything decent, i’m sure I’ll check that out too.
So I guess I’m not sick of it yet
The world of Star Wars is something I think about every day. I am a Sith fanboy. The Sith have never been more well represented than in the Old Republic series. I play Knights of the Old Republic both parts one and two at least twice a year each. I know I may be the odd one out but, the announcement made as excited as Dave’s parents would be if Dave got a job. But seriously, I just hope that Lucas Arts doesn’t find some way of screwing it up.
I think Star Wars still matters. I really enjoyed KoTOR 1 & 2. While I’m generally excited to see some extension of KoTOR, I’m wondering if an MMO will really do the trick. Obviously, MMOs can be fairly profitable. However, they take away that magic of you being special in the game. A lot of what made KoTOR neat was the mystery around your character and your specialness. That’s missing from most MMOs. I’d give anything a try but I’m betting the first time I get a shout to help someone “take down Kiirath the Sith Lord” for the 5th time in a row it’s likely to lose that shine.
I’ve been thoroughly enjoying some of the “free” MMOs out there like Perfect World since they are not based on any particular story universe. So, I don’t get the feeling that something isn’t “right” about the game because I don’t have any set expectations as many people will have going into The Old Republic.
I never cared about Star Wars…blah
I’ve always hated Star Wars. Well, not exactly true. The original three movies were spectacular, but everything made after are just really really bad. Lucasarts just won’t let it die, just accept that Star Wars is over and move on with your lives.
I definitely think Star Wars matters! In fact, I think Star Wars almost matters this year more than last year. With The Force Unleashed, The Clone Wars, the many books and comics, and the collectibles (they’re back at #1, according to Hasbro), Star Wars is back! It had a small break (not “gone” small, just nothing “big” happening), but now we’ve got more content then we can imagine. And with the Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO, I think Star Wars will live forever!
I loved star wars as a kid. I love many of the games. But to be honest, it has gotten old. The prequel trilogy didn’t help, and half the games are the same damn thing. It’s the ones that do something new that are really interesting, like Tie Fighter, Battlefront, or the superb Republic Commando.
But there is still room for good old fashioned Jedi action. They just have to get it right. If they make a new entry in the Jedi Knight series, I’ll buy it.
Of course, Jedi Academy did show that you can have an awesome jedi simulator and still have a less than compelling game. And this is the real problem with star wars: the story. Most star wars stuff brings nothing new to the table. It just recycles the same crap we’ve seen a thousand times before, with shallow, one dimensional characters and unlikely tie ins. And we get the same themes, and the same ideas. The Jedi order had just gotten really boring and old, and the force has lost its magic (Lightsabers remain awesome, but that doesn’t make for good story telling). And generally, the tone and style is the same. Republic commando was particularly interesting because it was from the view of a soldier on the ground, where a super battle droid is freaking scary, and everything is dark and gritty. But most games simply try to be star wars.
If they’d stop focusing on making star wars games, and start focusing on making fun games with great stories that just happen to be set in the star wars universe, then we’d see new ideas, and a breath of fresh air in this stagnant cash cow. Kotor did it, and that’s why I’m even interested in this game which I will never play.
Knights of the old republic was the best star wars product since the original trilogy. Kotor II looked like it would have been even better had they not been forced to cut out everything to meet the idiotic deadline (thankfully the people responsible for that are gone). If they had announced that they were making Kotor III, I would be psyched, but instead, we get this…
I don’t play MMO games, mainly because my computer is crap, but also because they are not all that fun. Too much work in a game if you ask me.
And, I want story in my games, and MMO’s just suck at that. Bioware says theirs will be different, but I’ll believe that when I see it.
For someone that I’ve grown to like over the past few months, the question “Does Star Wars still matter?” cut me deep and then your first response cut me ever worse. But in some ways, I have to agree and in other ways I have to completely disagree.
I agree that Star Wars games and animated movies are horrible. Please, don’t make me sit through anymore of those. I remember when it was cool to be a Star Wars nut, but those days have passed.
I disagree because the novels of the extended universe are AWESOME and give you a depth that only a true fan can enjoy. The movies tended to tick everyone off, but I think they all had their place in the Star Wars universe. Not only that, but when I think of my days as a young kid watching the original movies I get teary eyed and I wish I could get back to those days of just wanting to fight the evil Empire.
Does Star Wars still matter? You betcha, because when you come down to it, everyone wants to be a hero that is fighting the Empire and saving the galaxy, whether you are a Jedi or freighter pilot or in Dave’s case a Princess.
My almost three year old, who plays with the Lego Star Wars figures (hasn’t seen the movies) will be going as his own choice for Halloween; Darth Vader.
Even though I had starting falling out of love with the saga it’s my son’s turn to bring me back in.
Never! Never! Never!
I’ll never get bored of the concept of Star Wars!
We do need more stories with plenty of depth, maybe through the eyes of others, ie Wookies, Hutts etc.
The Force Unleashed ruled as it gave you further depth to the story, spin off movie perhaps? Just not animated!
I feel that theres still plenty left in this fantastic formula……..MORE PLEASE!!
Of course it still matters….
Been a fan for 27 years, and I don’t see my love for everything SW ever ending.
Yes SW still matters. KOTOR I and II were the best SW games ever made.
I will be all over this next game.
Star Wars still matters, yes…
But I don’t are anymore.
…At least not until a new Battlefront comes out.
i dont really give a s*** about star wars anymore
what i care about are good games
Oh it definatly does, I don’t even like the thought of MMORPGs, and have avoided them with grit and determination for years, even Galaxies, though that pained me terribly. However, the thought of a MMORPG with the Old Republic setting gets me “all wet”. To quote a comic strip that I read, its kinda scary to realize that the end of my life will have a release date at some point in the future, and that end will be when this game is released.
I was actually halfway through replaying KoTOR II when this was announced, so yeah I do think it still matters.
Allthough I never have been a fan of MMORPGs.
Star Wars will always matter in a sense that it pioneered the scifi genre, but in terms of games I can’t see myself playing this MMO. The point of the games is that you are a Jedi which is something special wrapped in a story that is usually pretty good. To have thousands of Jedi’s running around doing the same thing seems like it may take out some of the magic.
Someone brought up the novels and how that is keeping the universe alive and well. I say make a game based off of that ala KOTOR so everyone can enjoy.
Firstly a KOTOR MMO would do terrible things to the KOTOR story way too impersonal.
If a KOTOR 3 is announced and takes a similar stance as the previous KOTOR games it would be amazing. the power of the 360 could really enhance the already great KOTOR experience.
Star Wars still matters definately probably the most memorable movie series ive seen even the prequal trilogy even though they were not as good as eposides 4 – 6. i think they were great for providing a back story for the events of the original movies though.
Eposide 1 was great in my opinion though loved darthmaul, true he had no dialogue but he allways looked menancing in each of his appearances in the movie. Darth Maul is my favourite sith character ever.
KOTOR is an excellent game ive only stopped playing it for now since ive got fable 2 now but when I finish the story of fable 2 as a good guy ill go back to KOTOR and most likely have KOTOR 2 for when im done with it.
I have to say that I kind of agree with Lord Butters I. I mean, after Lethal Alliance on the handhelds I don’t think I can bring myself to look any Star Wars game in the eye. I only played he demo of Force Unleashed but I couldn’t bring myself to part with the money and buy the damn game. I think that Star Wars does matter, but I wish they would stop trying to sell it out. If “The Old Republic” is good then I will get it because I love Star Wars, but I don’t think any of the previous games I have played (Clone Wars, Battlefront 1 + 2, Revenge of the Sith, Lethal Alliance, NOT any of the KOTOR games) deserve the Star Wars name.
