PSP outsells PS2 outsells PS3 outsells 360 in Q2

Sony and Microsoft have released their second quarter unit sales (the three month period from the start of July to the end of September) of their consoles and the figures really speak for themselves; that is, if figures could say “hey, look! I’m surprising!”

Have a gander at the title, cover your mouth in mock-shock and then hit the jump for the figures in full, and why I think it’s all ended up this twisted, sorry way.

In the second quarter of the fiscal year (not the same as this year, which is Gregorian, fact fans) Microsoft proudly proclaimed, with a puffed-out chest and a glimmer of pride in their eye, that they had sold 2.2million Xbox 360 consoles across the world. Which is wonderful news, and good on them.

Then Sony showed up, and with their own sales data (available at their corporate info page here) to hand they revealed that PS3 sold 2.43million consoles worldwide in the same period; an 86% increase in sales over last year, when PS3 interest was low. Also wonderful news.

Is it wrong then, that Sony managed to top their own sales figures with more of their own sales figures? The PS2 sold 2.5million consoles in the second quarter of the fiscal year, and the PSP was scooped up a massive 3.18million times too. That’s huuuuge, and it’s without a massive degree of surprise that they also released their profits (that’s right, profits!) of the gaming division. However, profits for the company overall are down and their share price has plummeted.

What’s going on with these sales figures though? Despite a hefty price cut in September and scores of advertisements appearing all over the place (including some really creepy ones where people have the back of their heads hollowed out; see what I mean) and even a massive increase in sales in Japan, the 360 lost out to what was widely considered to be the loser of this generation of consoles.

Time for some ill-informed analysis you probably wont agree with! Jump on over to page two for my reasoning behind the sales trend.

    • Questionmarc says:

how you should really compare the figures is to compare the PS3 sale figures to the 360 sales figures after the same time after the 360’s release

the thing i don’t understand the most is the PS2 selling so much
i mean, i don’t see them around in stores anymore at all
and they already sold so much in the past years, these sales can’t be infinite u know
the psp sucks in my opinion so i’m surprised it sells so much too
and also, i thought the 360 was far ahead in front of the PS3.
all of this means, either Sony lied by showing bigger sales than they really are or ppl suddenly changed their minds and started buying Sony products for some reason i can’t think of
anyway, u can’t really compare them because that’s just how it is right now
