PlayStation Firmware Update Extravaganza!

October 14th, 2008 · 5 Comments

Sony’s released details of the PlayStation 3’s next system software update! And the PSP’s next one too! Be excited! There’s new stuff in both of them!!

New stuff! Yay! Click “Continue reading”! Do it!

Hyperactivity gone, we can indulge in some serious writing now. Just had to make that introduction a little on the exciting side. To be honest though, the announcements for both PSP and PS3’s brand new system software are pretty exciting in themselves without needless hyperbole. Let’s take a look at them.

First up, PLAYSTATION 3 System Software 2.50, to give it its full name. Firmware 2.50, as we’ll more likely call it (that or “that new PS3 update thingy”) will feature a stack of decent, um, features: a mix of new, old, pointless and ‘nicked from PSP’. Here they are in full in awesome bullet point form:

  • PlayStation Headset Support: The official PlayStation Headset - it’ll come with SOCOM: Confronation - features a fancy High Quality mode that delivers crystal-clear audio when you’re dishing out orders online (or more likely, swearing at everyone). 2.50 enables High Quality.
  • Trophy interface improvements: The next firmware update will add a percentage figure to your profile, charting your levelling up numerically, and it’ll add the same thing to Compare Trophy screens too. Kinda pointless sure, but nice nonetheless.
  • Friend Statuses: Wondering just how much you missed your friend by when you signed on, hoping for a game of Warhawk? Now you can find out.
  • Video Scene Search: Like the PSP’s Scene Search option, you’ll be able to press Square to bring up a menu of scenes in intervals of anything from 15 seconds to 10 minutes and beyond, and then choose whichever scene you like and watch the video from there.
  • PSN and Store: Account Management and Registration have been overhauled and you can redeem codes in the PlayStation Store now, rather than do it through the aforementioned Management section.
  • Power Saving: The PS3 is now economy friendly! You can set both your console and/or your controller to turn off after ‘x’ period of inactivity. Your PS3 can also turn itself off after completing a background download or an installation. Hopefully this means that some sort of auto installation is in too? No? Maybe not. Oh well.
  • Snapshots: The big feature of 2.50 (for me anyway) is the ability to take your own screenshots. For (non-)reviews of games such as WipEout HD, Metal Gear Online and Linger In Shadows, this sort of feature has been a godsend as it means I can point out things I’ve described in the article and paint a clearer picture for you, the dear reader. At the touch of a button (and if the game supports it; list coming soon, apparently) you can have a screenshot sent to your XMB for admiration later.
That’s that then. All in all, a good crop of updates for the PS3. What about its portable brother though? Hop on over the page for all the details on PSP firmware 5.00.

It also looks like we’re getting Flash 9 support in the PS3’s browser which is a nice bonus feature!

      Flash 9 support!?
That means I can finally watch things on Newgrounds without it lagging as if I was in a matrix movie.
