Remember Full Spectrum Warrior? No? Before Pandemic’s quality fell a little with Mercenaries 2, they made a desert warfare shooter originally tooled towards acting as a training tool for the US Army’s Iraq-bound squaddies to train them in working as a team in “fire and movement” situations, where one team would flank an enemy while the other distracts with gunfire. It was rated highly by pretty much everyone and sold well on PC, PS2 and Xbox.

And now, THQ are giving it away for free. Hit the jump for a video of the game to give you a taste, and the download link.

Developed in conjunction with the US Army (no, guys, I’m not thinking of America’s Army; that’s just a playable advert for the military, not a training tool) FSW was initially designed as a tool to educate soldiers on working in teams and even for overcoming post-traumatic stress disorder. However, the Army dropped the game because it wasn’t realistic enough to serve as a training tool and so, to avoid development time being wasted, Pandemic commercialized it and put it on sale as a console and PC game.

Players command two squads, Alpha and Bravo, but rather than control them directly you would instruct them where to go using a cursor on the level. Imagine playing SOCOM and dishing out commands, except you don’t actually control anybody. Despite sounding as fun as a digital version of Risk (which does exist, by the way; it’s not very good) I can remember playing the demo on PS2 and I thought it was pretty engaging considering you don’t actually pull a trigger at any point yourself.

If you fancy trying it out for yourself, THQ have released the full game for free on Filefront for you to download and play as you like. What’s not to like? For the 1.62GB file, click here to download it guilt-free, and safe in the knowledge that there wont be any lawyers threatening you any time soon.
