Patapon 2 FEVER

If someone had told me last year that a simple rhythm based title on a handheld would one day reside among my favorite games of all time, I would have laughed in their face…and then quickly run away on the off hand chance they were right…People who can see the future creep me out! If you haven’t guessed already (title is a clue!), I’m talking about Patapon. My loyal tribe of Patapon have traveled with me everywhere, filling every moment I was away from my home with never ending song. I just recently kicked my Patapon habit, only to discover Patapon 2 is on the way! FEVER!!!!!

Find out the latest on Patapon 2, after the jump!

If you own a PSP and DON’T own Patapon, your a weirdo. There, I said it, WEIRDO! For the 10 of you who don’t know what Patapon is all about, here’s the skinny. In the game you lead a tribe of Patapon (eyeballs with legs) into battle by hitting the four face buttons on your PSP, maintaining a beat/song which allows you to control your squad. Sounds pretty basic huh? I thought the same thing, I think I even opened my big mouth and mocked it a time or two, but once I played it once it was all over.

I have to admit that it was sometimes difficult to maintain a beat, but for the most part the rhythm system worked pretty damn well once you got into the “flow.” Sony Computer Entertainment designer Hiroyuki Kotani told Kotaku that Patapon 2 is going to come with a few new features to make things easier for the tone deaf and musically challenged. In Patapon 2, once you rock your way into a FEVER it will be a lot more difficult to lose it. Now you receive a small skull badge on your FEVER banner for your first mistake. Then the game will point out the appropriate rhythm with audio cues and if you mess up yet again you will simply go back to normal mode.

“The rhythm is made much easier this time,” Kotani said. “We wanted to expand the number of users, that’s also why we added multiplayer.”

Sweet and hella sweet! I know I would have a bunch more Patapon junkie friends if it was easier for them to keep the beat and now I can play with them too!

Patapon is a fun game, but it’s unforgiving at times.
The only time I stopped playing is because the Miracle Song (X-XX-XX) is broken, no matter how perfectly I played it, my fever broke. And since you have to do it like 4 times in the desert level, I just gave up. Wasn’t worth the frustration.
