Loading…Resistance: Retribution [CONNECTION TO] Resistance 2

October 11th, 2008 · 4 Comments

which is what you’re Resistance: Retribution running PSP may display when you connect it to your Resistance 2 running PS3 via USB. Of course it may just say ‘Could not connect. Error Code: FU’.

However, there are reasons for connecting your PSP to your PS3 other than bizarre error codes, and connection status messages, and all those reasons can be found after the jump. Hit it to bask in all it’s golden glory.

Ok, since this is fairly complicated (and I’m fairly simple), I’m going to be using *gasp* bullet points. GO GO GADGET BULLET POINTS!

When you connect a PSP running Resistance: Retribution to a PS3 running Resistance 2, you can navigate the latter’s menus to activate ‘Infection’ mode, which will cause many a change on the PSP game:

1. Since the Chimerian virus that Nathan Hale is infected with is transferred to James Grayson, the protagonist of Resistance: Retribution, you will gain all his abilities:

  • You can breathe underwater…for ever. Yes, infinite water breathing will allow you to access hidden areas where intel items can be collected, revealing more of the Resistance backstory and lore. Infection mode will allow access to 20 more intel items.
  • Regenerating health will get rid of filthy health packs and give you a Halo 3/Call of Duty-esque health system.

2. You will also be bestowed with a new weapon, namely the HE .44 Magnum from Resistance 2 as well as a new grenade if you collect all the intel.

3. The game’s narrative will change slightly such as talking about James’ “infected ass”. While these are not massive alterations in the story’s outcome, it’s certainly nice to see the developer doing more than than the bare minimum and putting things in that wouldn’t necessarily have been asked for, but are nice all the same.

4. Players will also be able to get in on some two analog stick goodness through the new PSP Plus system, which you can find out about over here. This will let you feel the rumble, and dual-stick the stick, as well as removing all aim assistance.

It should be noted (so get some paper and a pen) that, once disconnected from the PS3, the PSP will still have the ‘Infection’ mode, however once you turn the PSP off, it’s good bye to viral infection and an un-welcoming hello to standard mode.

Now, as the very astute Rothbart pointed out in our copious discussions about this piece of news, you have to own a PS3, PSP, Resistance 2 and Resistance: Retribution in order to access content that, presumably, could have been put on the UMD in the first place. There are two stances you can take with this:

“w00t, they’re extending the life of the PSP game, go devs!”

OR

“why shouldn’t I get the full content of a game that I bought, just because I don’t own a PS3/Resistance 2? Bad devs!”

Which side are you on?

The only problem is that it would get annoying having to turn R2 on every time you want to play Infection mode. But it’ll be worth it to use TWO STICKS and have rumble in a PSP game. This’ll be a pretty cool experience.

This looks like good news for some people, but it’s kinda weird it takes away the second P (portable) from the PSP, so it’s kinda like having a lower grade PS3 game

that’s a cool idea but the quality would probably be a bit crappy. but will be good to have 2 analog sticks
