LBP PSP? WTF?

Yet more mysterious job offers spring up following the mysterious Microsoft one last month. Media Molecule, game developer based above a bathroom store and creator of LittleBigPlanet, might be set on creating a portable version of the game at the most, or adding expansion features at the least.

Intriguing, very much so. All the rumourtastic info awaits after the break.

Mark Healy, co-founder of Media Molecule, had a wee chat with Eurogamer on the subject of LBP, PSP and what he’d like to see from them together in future. In what would make for a pretty nifty piece of companion software, Healy thought that some sort of portable item creation game would go down well for those who were really into the game’s Create mode:

“It’d be great to make – for the people who are really into the Create side – some kind of companion products that allow you to create things while you’re on the train…One thing that I’d love to add is the ability to create you’re own music, for example, that you can import into the game. That seems like an obvious one to do and it’d be quite easy really.”

That’d be pretty cool to see. Imagine coming up with tons of level ideas while at work and being able to do a little work on them on the go, rather than forgetting them before you got home. You might even be able to give it a little test to see if it works; make sure levers work as they should and all that. As long as it was reasonably priced – a £5 PSN download straight to your Memory Stick – I can’t see why it wouldn’t work.

The ability to create your own music would be smashing too; think of a Garage Band-style interface (or, from a gaming point of view, the old Music games and the MTV Music Generator series that followed) where you could slot blocks of rhythm, bass, melody and drums together to form your own soundtracks. Slip that onto a PSP and you could compose music while creating a level, so you can complement the two side-by-side and then copy the finished article over to your PS3 when it’s all done.

Goddamn. That all sounds fantastic. If I’m right anyway. Knowing me I wont be but still, Media Molecule’s own job advertisements seem to give the game away. A ‘PSP Game Engine Lead’ is being requested over on UK recruitment site Datascope, with a pretty specific description being given for what the job offers:

[Sony] are looking for a senior level programmer to work on the development of exciting new LittleBigPlanet projects. Ideal candidates will already have extensive experience of the PSP platform, having shipped at least one title on this format…This is a really great time to join this project.

Way to give the game away, silly. Still, looks like LittleBigPlanet is simply gonna expand more and more, not just within itself but to other consoles too. If the PSP can be used for occasional little spots of level design and music to improve your levels, great. Bring it on!
