Latest Spyro trailer doesn’t suck…seriously

There are a ton of games coming out this holiday season. I would like to thank the gaming industry for its tremendous consideration of my financial health. As a result of your blood, sweat and tears, my bank account is going to plummet just in time for the Christmas shopping rush. Thanks a lot.

Games like “Gears of War 2,” “Resistance 2,” “LittleBigPlanet,” “Fable II,” “Dead Space” and “Fallout 3″ are getting tons of attention from gamers and the media, but what about some of the lesser-publicized titles? Will “Age of Booty,” “Monster Lab,” “Destroy all Humans! Path of the Furon” and “Mushroom Men: Spore Wars” get as much love as the holiday juggernauts? No. Absolutely not.

How dare someone make such a blasphemous inquiry. However, there is one such game that has managed to catch my eye. Granted my interest is based on a movie-style trailer, but there is some interest nonetheless. Hit the jump for the game and the trailer. Oh, and please don’t laugh. I don’t want to have to send a horde of attack pigeons to your home.

I have never been a huge fan of the “Spyro” franchise. To be fair, I have never actually played any of the games, so my opinion of the series is based entirely on gameplay videos uploaded to the Internet. Though, none of this footage has ever really impressed me.  I considered downloading the original from the PlayStation Store a few months back, but decided against it once I realized that magical leprechauns don’t mail me envelopes loaded with money.

The series’ quality dipped noticeably after Insomniac Games shifted its focus to the “Ratchet & Clank” franchise. The Burbank-based studio developed the first three “Spyro” games for the original PlayStation, but the purple protagonist’s first outing on the PS2 and GameCube, “Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly,” was developed by Check Six Games.

Etranges Libellules, the developer of “The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon,” is looking to inject some life back into the series. The aforementioned title is slated to release for the PS2, PS3, 360, DS and Wii on Oct 21. Though it will undoubtedly be overshadowed by “LittleBigPlanet,” “BioShock” and “Fable II,” the latest trailer for the game provides some hope that it might not totally suck balls. Check it out below.

There wasn’t much gameplay shown in that footage, so it is hard to ascertain the title’s overall quality. Let’s be honest, any game studio can throw together an amazing cinematic in the hopes that a gaggle of morons will run out and unknowingly purchase a real turd. Etranges Libellules, which also developed “Arthur and the Invisibles: The Game” and “Asterix & Obelix: Kick Buttix,” isn’t the most high-profile studio, but perhaps it can work some magic with its first entry into the “Spyro” franchise. If nothing else, fans will be able to enjoy a pretty solid voice cast, as Christina Ricci, Gary Oldman and Mark Hamill have lent their talents to the game.

What do you think SGC? Can “Spyro” be saved or should the franchise be buried?

      You’re kidding, right?

They’ve taken a happy-go-lucky full-of-color platforming franchise and turned it into a Lord of the Rings wannabe? This is worse than what they’ve done to Sonic over the years.

The protagonist is a little PURPLE dragon with yellow horns. How is a gamer supposed to take this supposedly epic game seriously when the main character isn’t too far off from being inducted as a My Little Pony.

Just like Sonic, this franchise is sinking ship that’s almost reached the bottom of the ocean.

Both Spyro and Crash died after being let go by their original creators. (I parallel these two franchises because of their similar history.)
They both had a very good trilogy, but then other people took over, and made them a milking machine.

This is clearly a LOTR ripoff. C’mon.. Elijah Wood (Frodo) is the voice actor for Spyro? please… Maybe it will be a good game, but they ruined the charmed it had with us fans.

If they don’t take the Spyro franchise, rip it up, chew it up, spit it out, use it as cat litter, wrap fish in it, burn it and take a crap on it, I just may pick it up for PS3.

From what I have heard this is the last part of a trilogy and Elijah Wood voiced Spyro in all three games… I thought the trailer looks kinda cool. It will hopefully be a nice playthrough for all the platform lovers out there…!

All you haters can say what you want, but I love me some Spyro.

I think it looks pretty good. I skipped the last one, but most of the Spyro games are simply a ton of fun to play.

The voice talent has always been pretty good in the Spyro games. I think this is Elijah Wood and Gary Oldman’s third game which is great.

I appreciated Spyro when it first came out, but now it seems kind of weird to put the fate of the world in the hands of two purple dragons, but maybe they are trying to do the Hobbit thing like the lord of the rings

I bought the original Playstation because of Spyro, I loved the first 3 games, still in my sister and my opinion the best trilogy of games we’ve ever played.
But the PS2 ruined the franchise and now they should just leave it to die. The Trailer looks good, but I want to remember Sypro the way it was, clearly its come a long way, in the wrong direction.

Oh and if that guy is meant to be hunter, someone needs to take a bullet to the head for changing his character to that.
      My bad for double posting.

You know, I feel the same way you do, oh mr. Guy-Who-Wrote-This-Article-I-Found-Through-Google.

I never was a fan of Spyro, except for the very first psx game which I used to play a little. I never liked Spyro, it looked cheap and childish…. and in a bad way.
But this “Dawn of the Dragon”? It’s like it’s not the Spyro I know and dislike, but another Spyro, totally different. Totally new. Totally badass! I’m far past my childhood years and yet I am so curious about this game. I’m dreaming it may prove to be a solid platform game similar to the PS3 Ratchet&Clank.
Flying as much as I want, using the sixaxis, being able to play as that cute nasty black she-dragon…. I hope this game will not prove to be as bad as the previous Spyro games, because I am interested.
