WipEout HD is WipEout, that futuristic anti-grav PSone classic renowned for being really bloody hard, except in high definition. Sort of. I mean, it’s not exactly the same with the same things as the original game, but it plays like the original but this isn’t really a bad thing, since it’s a marvelous game indeed.
Anyway, I’m digressing. NonReview, with a lovely Flickr slideshow, after the jump.
I’ll put it to you straight away: WipEout HD, awkward capitalization and all, is an absolute gem and a cheap one to boot. For 20 bucks, or 12 quid, you’ll get 16 tracks (8, with reverse options served up) and 12 floaty anti-gravity racing ships lifted from PSP games Pure and Pulse. Each ship is specifically designed to zip along at a billion miles an hour on giant tracks several tens of kilometers in length, all while blowing each other up with an assortment of various weapons.
It’s also exceptionally pretty. The ships are covered in detail and the tracks are chock-full of it too, without becoming too distracting that you send yourself straight into the next wall at the speed of sound. If anything it all looks a little too clean and sterile, but then in the futuristic setting this is pitched in you can imagine that would be the norm: just look at how clean every futuristic movie you’ve ever seen is.
So then: it looks ace, it’s a time-tested formula, it’s well worth the money, and it’s all packed into a 1GB PSN download. That’s all you need to know to grasp the concept of WipEout HD and from there it’s a blast.
Errr, sort of. Confession time: at first, getting to grips with WipEout’s handling can be a pretty tough task. Quite why, you can see for yourself over the page.

The game looks great and probably worth the money but not my type of game. I like racing on wheels.
