Introducing the world’s most awful “instrument”

As Doc reported yesterday, “Wii Music” didn’t do so hot during its first day at Houston-area GameStops. Well, I did some sleuthing and found a possible reason.

Hit the jump for the shocking revelation.

I don’t know where the Nintendo execs went to school, but I always thought that a dog was a mammal, not an instrument. In fact, I am pretty sure that killing a dog to use its skin as an instrument is grounds for imprisonment. Besides, a dog’s bark is one of the most annoying sounds ever. Some people actually purchase special collars to discourage that kind of activity.

As much as I make fun of “Wii Music,” I really don’t mind that it exists. It is clearly intended to appeal to an audience to which I don’t belong. However, I do have a problem with that fact that Nintendo sunk cash into R & D for this game, instead of investing in a new IP. I don’t care that the company is making games for the casual crowd, but I do care that it seems to be at the expense of core titles. Thank god new “Pikmin” and “Punch-Out!!” games are on the way.

Oh, and just to throw a bit more salt into the wound, most critics haven’t been too high on the noisemaker either.  It currently has an aggregate score of 64 on Metacritic.

And the saddest part is that I actually know a person who this will appeal to.

      I don’t know, a 64 seems a bit… generous, to me. ;)

So it’s an actual disk game? I might rent it to laugh at how absurdly bad the game is.

You know, let me be the devil’s advocate here. Nintendo’s mentality is to release a console which makes money on day one (check) and which a non traditionnal audiance will buy. They’ve successfully captured the casual audiance of our parents and even grand-parents. So why is it such a crime that they go after kids now?

Ok, it’s not the next Zelda or Metroid, you’re disappointed, but there is an audiance, young children and no one is talking about them. Now that’s the audiance I see, maybe Nintendo really is illusionned and thinking the adult casual audiance will find interest.

They have a strategy and it has been controversial from day one. And successful for them, no matter what we think of it. Doesn’t mean every product they release will work, the game isn’t really selling. But you have to see the big picture here.

Incidently, maybe marketing this at E3 wasn’t a good move, again because we’re not their target audiance for this, but they still need to market it heavily because their target audiance don’t normally buy a lot of games and so they have to be made aware of it.

Whether it succeeds or (most likely) fails, Nintendo have proven themselves to be a jack of all trades. We’ll have our hardcore games from time to time, after all Mario Galaxy was awesome and Smash Bros was equal to itself, if not better. But Nintendo has changed the rules of engagement and so far, it has been working out pretty good for them. Doesn’t mean I have to like it, but I’ll certainly respect it.
