Industry Originality Dies: LegoBigPlanet is Announced!

With the impending release of LittleBigPlanet less than three weeks away, the buzz for the game is almost immeasurable.  The potential impact the game will have on user-generated game content and sharing is also hard to gauge.  While I think you’d be hard pressed to surprise anyone by suggesting other developers will try to follow in Media Molecule’s footsteps, I think we can all coordinate a simultaneous *GASP* at who is the first to attempt to recreate the buzz for their own profit.  It’s none other that our beloved Lego.  They’ve gone so far as to basically, as an anonymous angry internet commentor said “recreate the whole damned game, but with Lego blocks as the in-game building blocks, and Lego people instead of our lovable Sackboy!”

How low has Lego sunk that they’re announcing blatant rip-offs of games before the game they’re mimicking is even released?  I mean I’ll admit, building your own levels with Lego bricks sounds intuitive enough, and Lego did have cute little characters long before we ever were introduced to Sackboy.  Heck, Lego sets have even had stickers for decades.  The more I compare the two, the more confused I get.  Is LittleBigPlanet a ripoff of Lego or is LegoBigPlanet a rip-off of the game?  Can both be true?  Should I buy and enjoy both or call for a boycott of both?  I’m so confused.

An interesting rumored features of LegoBigPlanet also include in-game ordering of custom sets.  Lego has offered similar features in their own software before, but apparently if you create a great level, from within the game you can submit an order (paid for via your PS Wallet) that Lego will fulfill and ship to you, complete with a customized Lego person.  I can already picture my office desk adorn with massive custom levels built from the custom Lego sets of my favorite in-game levels.
