A Sony PlayStation 3 is being called a hero this morning, after what authorities are calling the single greatest act of heroism ever demonstrated by a consumer electronic product.

While the cause is still under investigation, officials say a fire broke out at a home on the 6200 block of West Main in Des Moines, Iowa at 5:20 this morning.  While the residents slept, a family of four, the flames quickly engulfed their home.

“I woke up coughing, and I couldn’t see anything,” said homeowner Robert Hayes.  “Then out of nowhere, my Playstation 3 busted through the door carrying both of my kids and our dog.”

According to Hayes, the next few moments were quite chaotic.

“Then my PS3 threw itself through our bedroom window so that my kids and I could escape,” said Hayes.  “It was the last time I saw it.”

Authorities say that the PS3 then returned to the blaze in an attempt to save the family’s Xbox 360 and it’s games.

“The machine just couldn’t stand up to all of those exclusive titles,” said one firefighter.

Memorial services for the PS3 have been pushed back to coincide with the release of LittleBigPlanet.

“At least now the PS3 fanboys have something legitimate to be proud of,” said one gamer.  “It perished trying to save the family’s prized possession.”

The Xbox 360 was treated for Red Rings and released.  “It’s a common injury, it happens all the time,” said a hospital spokeswoman.
