This year is jam packed with games offering Co-op experiences. With all that there is to choose from, the two that really catch my eye are Gears of War 2’s Horde Mode and Left 4 Dead’s Survival mode. Both include totally new multiplayer game types but have a common goal: How long can I survive.

With online co-op becoming more prominent in games today, developers are trying to make their games stand out. In my opinion Gears 2 and Left 4 Dead are two games that have hit the multiplayer jackpot. Both games include a Horde Mode and a Survival Mode, which are impressive steps in the right direction for multiplayer in general. That being said, here is what makes these new game types really exciting.
Horde Mode
5 player Co-op – Who doesn’t want more room to play with friends. The more the merrier in my opinion.
Enemies – With Gears 2 you have a huge variety of deadly enemies to take on.
Weapons – The weapons in Gears 2 make you feel like the ultimate badass. Plus the is a huge selection of weapons.
Lots of Levels/ Good Level Design - There are lots of cool levels to play on. The level, Avalanche looks amazing , with the random avalanches that changes the face of the level. That’s pretty cool if you ask me.
Waves Style/ Wave Rankings - The wave system is cool cause it allows you to have some time to re-stock on ammo and get into a better defensive position. Also between rounds it gives you a quick summary of how well everybody did. So there is some good time to talk smack to your friends.
Leaderboards – The Leaderboard system lets you check out how well you match up against your friends and the rest of the world. I cant tell you how many times I checked the COD4 Leaderboards, to see who on my friends list I am better than.
Earn Achievements - This isn’t really a Horde mode only thing , but I know this is where I will earn most of my achievements. I would like to see some one get Seriously 2.0 all in Horde mode.

Could someone be nice enough and clarify Gears of War 2 has bots, like Unreal Tournament 3 has.
I was under the impression that you could start a multiplayer game and have bots in the match and the bots got replaced by real life gamers as they join, but if noone joins you can still play horde or whatever with bots.
Cliff B said in an interview that there are millions of gamers without a gold account and EPIC wanted everyone to be able to enjoy multiplayer regardless. Also, it makes sure teams always are full, even if some lameo drops out, he is replaced by a bot instead of messing up the game.
I hope this is true, can anyone who has actually played Gears 2 confirm this? Thanks guys.
(dons anorak) Actually, this gamestyle isn’t that new. They had much the same thing in the original Aliens vs. Predator. It was even a combination of the two styles, in that you first had to run to the safehouse through hordes of Aliens, then defend it against progressively nastier waves. That concept just didn’t seem to catch on until co-op suddenly became the “Big Thing” to have years later.
But of the two options, I’d definetely go for Left4dead. It looks to be more emotional and traumatic that Gears, which while, nice, is still just a big dumb shooter. Also, remember that in Left4Dead you can play co-op from the other side. Not an option in Gears.
I was also going to mention that this is not a brand new game mode. Unreal tournament had a game mode called invasion or some such in which you have to fight off waves of enemies which become harder/more numerous as you progress.

i cant see how you can say that gears is just a big dumb shooter when its probably going to be a lot deeper than L4D, if you think about it L4D is going to be counterstrike with really good AI and co-op. im not saying it won’t be fun i just wanted to point out the hypocrisy of that statement
I meant “big dumb shooter” not as an insult against the game, but more a description of the style. It has big guys firing big guns at even bigger aliens, all the time being manly and tough. It’s load and proud.
L4D is about ordinary people caught in an extraordinary situation fighting zombies with whatever weapons they can find, just trying to survive and they’re scared. It wasn’t a comment on the depth, but on style.
Though to say L4D is counterstrike with good AI-and co-op seems very odd. Other than the same engine, what do the two really have in common?
