Fresh off the heels of the latest bombshell from Microsoft, who admitted that Gears of War 2 will not be released in either Japan or Germany, we’ve learned that Gears of War 2 won’t be released in certain states within the United States, indefinitely.
No specific reason has been given, but we have learned a few things about this latest development. Read all about this latest Gears of War 2 fiasco, after the jump!
We’ve learned from a source within Microsoft that will remain nameless, that Gears of War 2 will not be shipping to either Utah or Idaho when the game is released in early November. While there has not been an official confirmation of this rumor, Cliffy_B’s twitter page, has confirmed several points of fact within this rumor.
First off, Cliffy_B has written in his twitter recently that Utah was “Lame” and Idaho was, in fact, “dumb.” He has railed against BYU for being a “Sucky college” and that he hates “potatoes” obviously taking a shot at the number one cash crop from the great state of Idaho. On the other hand, Cliffy_B has supported polygamy as being “sweet” although whether that statement was made in direct support of Utah is unconfirmed.
Obviously, the biggest hurdle to getting these games into the Utah and Idaho markets after the game releases in November is the localization of the games for the specific cultures of Utah and Idaho. In fact Saint’s Row 2 almost didn’t get Utah and Idaho releases for the same reason, with Volition citing the “excessive costs of localization for those people.”
One Volition programmer said, “When I found out Napoleon Dyamite was filmed in Idaho, I was stunned. I just thought that movie was set in the 80′s… I don’t even know if they sell Xbox 360′s there.”
Word has begun to trickle out to the local media outlets in those states. Unconfirmed reports are springing up that Idahoans (unconfirmed localized nickname) are up in arms over being snubbed, and took to the streets of Idaho Falls earlier today. More than a quarter-dozen protesters apparently marched on their local Wal-Mart, insisting that Idaho receive the same treatment as other sparsely-populated, technologically inept regions, like West Virginia.
We’ve been in contact with one of the local organizers, Merle Havadasher, who had this to say. “If those sister-marrying coal miners can use a Lancer to carve up Locusts, there’s no reason we can’t. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m traveling to Montana to get one of those Nintendoes so I can try the game out for myself”
As for Utah, the state has long been a hard nut to crack for Microsoft. While the Wii and PS3 have sold reasonably well, the Xbox 360 has consistently sold poorly since launch. Although the divergent culture, language and economy could be blamed on the poor Xbox 360 support, most experts blame the lack of Donny and Marie Osmond games as the most likely cause.
