DivX Inc. Responds To Lack Of DivX VOD Content

October 21st, 2008 at 2:00 pm · 6 Comments

I wrote an article yesterday explaining how I’d gone through the steps to enable my PS3 to play DivX VOD content only to find that I couldn’t locate any DivX VOD content.  I felt like I must have been missing something, so the article was, in part, written to point out how difficult it was to find anything to play, but also with hope that some know-it-all internet sleuth would come to my rescue and point out “MysterySiteX” and their cornucopia of DivX VOD content on the cheap!

Alas, that didn’t happen.  What did happen, was that I got an email from DivX, Inc’s Bruce Lidl.

Bruce sent me the following email:

Hi Sean,

I ran across your article about the recent PS3 firmware update on SarcasticGamer, and the new DivX VOD functionality it included.  You are absolutely right to be curious about what the content might end up being.  Right now there are not many distributors of DivX VOD content; they are for the most part in Europe and/or are pretty small operations. That said, the situation is likely to change in the near future, as we have recently signed distribution deals with Sony Pictures and Warner Brothers.

I hope that helps a bit, but please let me know if I can answer any other questions or be of assistance in any way.  Best,

Bruce Lidl
DivX, Inc.

The sentence that best sums up DivX’s response is “You are absolutely right to be curious about what the content might end up being.” It looks like I might have hit the nail on the head with the players preceding the content to play.  Let’s hope I’m also right in this opening us up to content that wouldn’t otherwise be available via the PS Video store.

In DivX’s defense, we didn’t pay for the update… nobody bought into the PS3 for the DivX VOD functionality (and the regular DivX playback functionality works very well.)  I have a hard time really looking at this negatively, it’s just rather surprising that the feature made it all the way to release without anything to use it with.

I’ve got an email in to Bruce to alert SarcasticGamer HQ when the porn arrives… Frawlz insisted that I do that!

divx vod wasnt one of the features sony talked about in the 2.5 release. they snuck it in. I’m sure its a response to the 360 having support from netflix. So it will probably develop into a bigger feature as the netflix feature becomes a bigger selling point.

No need to wait for Bruce to let you know: DivX porn is already plentiful. SugarDVD.com has plenty that work fine with the new PS3, just search for movies with the DivX option in the Advanced Search. (Yes, I already confirmed this. I mean, what am I supposed to do, there’s not a lot of other DivX VOD content available! I was basically forced into watching DivX porn!)

But Mom/honey (delete as applicable), I was forced into watching DivX porn…

Be sure and let us know how that argument turns out for you won’t you?

My problem is, that because I live in Canada, I cannot buy the video content from the playstation store. So this whole rental thing through the playstation store, is a crock o’ sh*t. I figured the Divx vod thing was a way to ensurte that we in other countries could actually download and watch tv shows and movies for a rental fee, and then t o find out it was another crock o’s*it…at least you guys in the US have the option to rent through your PS3…what a fuc*in snow job.

Wow. I think I’ve just been round the same circuit as you… and everyone else.

I have activated my DivX compatible portable DVD player, woo-woo; the one I bought so I can download and watch films… BUT THERE ARE NONE!

That’s a lie; there are films out there. In fact it’s the same old stupid story that we have with music downloading… I want to pay for my music… I desparately DO want to pay… but it’s just too bloody difficult. If I DO pay, then I get some stupid digital rights crap that crashes and oops, I lose all my music. Either that or I have to have i-crap worming its way all over my computer like some kind of analid parasite.

I figure that the solution for divx film dowloading is the same as my solution for music downloading. For the music, I pay napster subscription and then strip all the digital rights rubbish off the files (using something called fairuse4wm.exe). Like I said; I really really WANT to pay for my music (insane? perhaps) rather than do that peer to peer stuff.

For the films, I go to the great site zml.com and pay my money to download films from some Russian company, which currently is absolutely the only option available to me.

I really want to do this stuff legally, but the ineffectual imbeciles with shiny arses are so busy fighting over who gets the biggest royalties for whatever it is they do, that I am being FORCED to circumvent the true letter of the law, and download these things supposedly ‘illegally’… and in my opinion I’d like to hope that is considered to be acceptable in the eyes of the law.
