Why CoD: World at War could be better than CoD 4

I’ve been laughed at these last couple weeks for two reasons. Reason number one is that I’m not looking forward to Gears of War 2 at all. The second reason I’ve been laughed at is because I think Call of Duty: World at War is looking awesome, and I personally believe it’s going to be more fun than Call of Duty 4.

Whenever you pick your jaw up off the floor, I’ll take a look at the perk list, show you some new video and pictures, so join me after the jump.

“But Animathias!” I can hear you explain, “Treyarch is making World at War and they SUCK!” That may be the general gaming consensus, I’ve never had a poor run-in with Treyarch. Back in 2006 when Gears of War and Call of Duty 3 were released on the same day, one of those games sucked hundreds of hours out of my life, and it wasn’t Gears.

The single player campaign of Call of Duty 3 was mediocre at best, and I’ll give you that. The multiplayer, however, was a complete blast. I even think that it trumps CoD4 in some ways (Capture the Flag, anyone?) Sure, the weapons weren’t very advanced and there wasn’t much variety, but the core gameplay was a blast, and the class system made sure that everyone had a role to play. Plus, turning a corner to see a Panzer Tank bearing down on your position was just intense, you don’t get run-ins like that in Call of Duty 4.

So, why exactly do I think World at War is going to be great? Well there’s a few reasons. First off is my love for CoD3’s multiplayer. Sure it could’ve been better, but what was there was great fun. Second is that Treyarch has had an extra year to develop World at War and they’ve got the awesome CoD4 engine to work with. Even a drunk monkey, building a game on top of this engine, could produce something that rivals the top FPS games of this generation, and I think Treyarch’s developers are a bit more skilled than a wasted monkey.

So you want more of my impressions? Let’s look at the leaked perk list on page 2.

Ordnance training may have something to do with munitions, or maybe something to do with navigating, sure does look interesting those perks, well except for Martyrdom of course.

I will be in the beta (hopefully) next week so i will make my own mind up BTW I am not too keen on the dog idea … well because they were so overpowered in single player well the time limit better not run past a minute.

    • Animathias says:

@Jolley22 – I see your point on the dogs, but I don’t think they can be any worse than the helicopter. There are times when you spawn and it mows you down within a second.. at least you can fight back against the dogs.

    • Eddiemilz says:

yeah i think the dogs will be a good change.
      Nice article

the second chance could ruin the game if they didn’t make it right…. do you get to keep your kill streak if your revived? do you have unlimited amount of revival? b/c if thats the case you could play whole games without anyone dying b/c everyone on a team is using second chance and reviving one another while unleashing ungodly amount of dogs on the other team

    • Artemas says:

Hmmm. It doesn’t look all that bad. Im certainly interested in it but I will wait for some beta action and see how big the vehical health bars are before I make my decision.

    • darkwonders says:

The battlefield games for the PC had revival systems… And yet a lot of people still died… Things that will still kill you w/ no chance of second chance
      -head shots
      -grenades
      -artillery strikes
      -dogs

Don’t worry. You’ll die plenty of times :)

Im just worried about the BALANCE. With waves after waves of dogs, and vehicles available it can get unfair for the loosing team.
Ive played COD4 before where you join a game in progress start with the loosing team, but once your in if your good enough, you can actually change the tide. WAW better be well balanced or its going to suck. The more you add the more you disrupt a perfect balance.

    • Alex-Lives says:

      OMG nooooooooo

looks like Call of Duty: World at War is going to be noob friendly too because martyrdom is back and cheap kills are coming with it. NUFF SAID.

    • Animathias says:

@Waffleboy – Yes, you were one of them. :)

@Alex-Lives – Toss Back and the Flak Jacket should be enough to counter Martyrdom. Is it cheap? Yes. Does it take skill to use? No. Should it be removed from the game? Probably.

All we can hope for is that Treyarch will tweak it a bit. Make it so the player needs a grenade for it to go off. Raise the Fuse, etc… Anything to make it less of a random death trap.

Nothin like some friggin fast paced bolt-action rifle game play from World War 2……But then again there is getting poked in the eye with a red hot poker….or kicked in the teeth with a steel toed boot.
