Why CoD: World at War could be better than CoD 4

One of the most interesting aspects of Call of Duty 4 was the perk system, which was clearly built upon the class system found in Call of Duty 3. Of course, it looks like the perks are returning for Call of Duty: World at War. Some look like they’ve been tweaked, some are returning, and some are brand new. I’m going to list them, and put my own little note beside each one.

I found this information thanks to Simbuz, one of our community members. The discussion thread can be found here.

Slot 1

  • Special Grenades x3 – Same one from CoD4. Hopefully they keep the same rule that Smoke Grenades don’t work with this perk.
  • Satchel Charge x2 – Sound’s like it’s exactly like C4.
  • M9A1 Bazooka x2 – The WWII equivalent of RPGs. Only it’s a bazooka. I see no problems there.
  • Bomb Squad – If it’s anything like CoD4’s, you’ll be able to see the enemy’s Satchel Charges and Bouncing Betties. Very useful for the right class.
  • Bouncing Betty x2 – The WWII Claymore. Trip the wire and it bounces up and explodes in your face.
  • Bandolier – Another CoD4 veteran. Allows you to carry more ammo.
  • Primary Grenades x2 – Dropped down from x3 in CoD4, a good move if you ask me. Some games in CoD4 are all about grenade spamming instead of actual fighting. I imagine there’s some uproar going on somewhere about this, but I’m fine with it.
  • M2 Flamethrower – I saw this bad boy in action in one of the Single Player videos. It’s going to be situational, yes, but it’s also going to be a lot of fun. Plus, there are few easier ways to coax a sniper out of that bunker than to drench it in flames.

Slot 2

  • Stopping Power – The premier CoD4 perk makes its return, and the only one I’m saddened by. I just hope that the others are half as good as Stopping Power, otherwise, there will be no reason to use any other Slot 2 perk other than Juggernaut.
  • Fireworks - A revamped Sonic Boom. This one makes your explosives more deadly. Should definitely be handy on Vehicle-heavy maps.
  • Flak Jacket - Apparently, this one reduces damage caused by explosives. I’m not sure how handy this will be, but it would definitely help if you’re killed by Martyrdom a lot. Plus I’m sure it helps when a Panzer’s got you in its sights.
  • Gas Mask – Not much is known about this one yet. I’m guessing there’s going to be gas grenades in the game, and if there is, you would want a Gas Mask to protect you. I have my doubts that if there are Gas Grenades, that they would be prevalent enough to constitute using this over Stopping Power or any other Slot 2 perk.
  • Juggernaut - Alot of people hate Juggernaut, I don’t mind it. If 90% of players are going to use Stopping Power, they shouldn’t complain about someone using Juggernaut to counteract it. Especially helpful if you’re using a Shotgun and need to get in close.
  • Camouflage – The article I read said that Reconnaissance hides you from the Recon Plane, but I think it was a mistype and that Camouflage does the job. I just hope it adds some sort of visual camouflage to your character.
  • Sleight of Hand – Reload faster. Helpful for those belt-fed LMGs.
  • Shades – Reduces the intensity of Signal Flares, which I’m guessing is just like Flash-bang Grenades. Could be helpful if you tend to blind yourself.
  • Double Tap – Shoot faster. ‘Nuff said.
  • Overkill – Carry two primary weapons. In Modern Warfare, this one is kind of a push over. In World War 2, I think it might gain some ground. This pistols back then weren’t exactly as power as a Desert Eagle.

Slot 3 and Vehicle Perks are waiting for you on Page 3.

Ordnance training may have something to do with munitions, or maybe something to do with navigating, sure does look interesting those perks, well except for Martyrdom of course.

I will be in the beta (hopefully) next week so i will make my own mind up BTW I am not too keen on the dog idea … well because they were so overpowered in single player well the time limit better not run past a minute.

    • Animathias says:

@Jolley22 – I see your point on the dogs, but I don’t think they can be any worse than the helicopter. There are times when you spawn and it mows you down within a second.. at least you can fight back against the dogs.

    • Eddiemilz says:

yeah i think the dogs will be a good change.
      Nice article

the second chance could ruin the game if they didn’t make it right…. do you get to keep your kill streak if your revived? do you have unlimited amount of revival? b/c if thats the case you could play whole games without anyone dying b/c everyone on a team is using second chance and reviving one another while unleashing ungodly amount of dogs on the other team

    • Artemas says:

Hmmm. It doesn’t look all that bad. Im certainly interested in it but I will wait for some beta action and see how big the vehical health bars are before I make my decision.

    • darkwonders says:

The battlefield games for the PC had revival systems… And yet a lot of people still died… Things that will still kill you w/ no chance of second chance
      -head shots
      -grenades
      -artillery strikes
      -dogs

Don’t worry. You’ll die plenty of times :)

Im just worried about the BALANCE. With waves after waves of dogs, and vehicles available it can get unfair for the loosing team.
Ive played COD4 before where you join a game in progress start with the loosing team, but once your in if your good enough, you can actually change the tide. WAW better be well balanced or its going to suck. The more you add the more you disrupt a perfect balance.

I’m really looking forward to the game now.

    • Alex-Lives says:

      OMG nooooooooo

looks like Call of Duty: World at War is going to be noob friendly too because martyrdom is back and cheap kills are coming with it. NUFF SAID.

    • Animathias says:

@Waffleboy – Yes, you were one of them. :)

@Alex-Lives – Toss Back and the Flak Jacket should be enough to counter Martyrdom. Is it cheap? Yes. Does it take skill to use? No. Should it be removed from the game? Probably.

All we can hope for is that Treyarch will tweak it a bit. Make it so the player needs a grenade for it to go off. Raise the Fuse, etc… Anything to make it less of a random death trap.

Nothin like some friggin fast paced bolt-action rifle game play from World War 2……But then again there is getting poked in the eye with a red hot poker….or kicked in the teeth with a steel toed boot.
