60 players online creates confusion
The jist of DolphGB’s beef seems to stem from players “running around like headless Chimerans not knowing what to do next.” Which is more than a bit odd. Ummm…when did online FPS matches becoming heavily organized, precision based games? If you want clear audio cues and on-screen markers, play a Skirmish. That’s what it’s for. If you want to be more coordinated in Team DeathMatches and take advantage of the squad setup, play with people who use voice chat for more than the token slur. It’s really that simple. Notice how he never mentioned that there is very little lag (except for maybe our Australian brothers) when playing with 60 players? Or that having so many players elevates TDM battles from small firefights up to a city wide full scale war? Oh, and if you really wanted incentive to play as a team, R2 has this great thing called 8-player Co-Op! I’m confused as to why he’s confused, to be honest.

A million bullets
This time the beef seems to be with the inaccuracy of R2′s weapons and the sheer amount of damage required to take down baddies (in Co-Op I’m assuming). According to “tests” done by DolphGB, the L1(aim) button makes almost no difference in terms of improving accuracy.
“Shooting from the hip is as accurate as using L1.” - DolphGB
Once again I am left more than a bit confused. I can only assume that DolphGB only ever used the Wraith (see above), playing as a Soldier in Co-Op. Big surprise that a freakin mini-gun is a tad bit inaccurate. When using the Wraith, yeah L1 really won’t up your accuracy (who the hell would raise a mini-gun up to their eye anyway?) but for every other weapon but the shotgun it DOES help a lot. Now, in Co-Op the enemy health is uber, so headshots and such won’t win you the day, but for everything else not using L1 is just foolish. Shooting from the hip is not nearly as helpful as using L1 when running around with the Carbine. Shooting from the hip translates into “friendly fire” in my book.
I do agree with his gripe with the amount of damage baddies can take in Co-Op. Given the destructive power of R2′s available weapons, the bad guys need to be able to take some serious punishment but come on! A few of the bigger monsters require multiple reloads from numerous players to take down and even the regular frontline nasties keep coming long after they should have been reduced to paste. Still, while it does make Co-Op a bit tougher and slower at times, it can’t take away from the massive, “we’re surrounded!”, “AMMO!”, “MEDIC!”, constant gun battling madness. I have no doubt that enemy health in Co-Op will be reduced/balanced in the future but even as it is now the pro’s far outweigh the con’s.

Where’s the fun stuff?
“I’m so used to Resistance: FOM that this doesn’t feel like a huge leap ahead. I can’t put my finger on it, but it just doesn’t feel the same.” – DolphGB
Due to the above four complaints DolphGB doesn’t feel R2 is as fun to play as R1. He still thinks CoD 4 is king of the online shooters with Warhawk running a close second. That’s cool because I agree. R2 is a great AAA title but we’ll have to wait and see if it can approach CoD 4′s throne. As long as there are PS3′s in the world Warhawk will remain a core part of the PS3′s FPS backbone, without question.
That said, there is still room for R2 in the halls of great PS3 shooters. Since I don’t agree 100% with DolphGB’s gripes, I have no problem seeing the fun. R2 took what was great about R1 (insane weapons for instance) and upped the ante. Eight player Co-Op is fun and addictive; I’d even call it a prime selling point. 60 player online TDM battles easily redefine what console gamers should expect from an online FPS.
Is R2 the best game ever? Nope. Will it sweep CoD 4 under the rug? I seriously doubt it. Does it suck? Hells no! I’m hesitant to give any sort of score to the game before I get my hands on the finished copy but I seriously doubt the final MetaCritic score will be below an 85. A 90+ is likely unless the single player is garbage and no patches ever come out. R2 is a solid package. Co-Op is intense, tough and rewarding. The other multiplayer options (Team DeathMatch) are insanely massive and fast paced, not too mention allowing consoles to finally begin to compete with PC gamers in terms of how many people can be in a match.
So, R2 may not be game of the year, it does have a few little problems, but I don’t regret my pre-order one bit. Best $5 I’ve spent in months and I can’t wait until November 4th when the whole world will see for themselves why Resistance 2 DOES NOT SUCK!
