With the Resistance 2 Beta coming to an end soon (October 30th at Midnight) I couldn’t help but cruise the web to find out what other people were saying about the game. Taking into account that EVERY game has its detractors, I was floored by an article written by DolphGB over at PS3Attitude. Not only did he think that the Resistance 2 Beta sucked, he broke his grievances down into five neat little reasons for why he feels the way he does.
He’s managed to take blowing things out of proportion to a whole new uber level.
Rather than allow some poor soul to be swayed by such outlandish and inaccurate claims, I have taken it upon myself to speak for all those who KNOW how freaking great R2 is shaping up.
Check out my response to “5 Reasons Why the Resistance 2 Beta Sucks,” point by point, after the jump!
I’ve been playing the Resistance 2 Beta constantly since October 17th, when I received my code via a GameStop pre-order. My main reason for playing the Beta, and buying the game, stemmed from my desire to play with the SG community. Heck, that’s the reason I own almost all of my FPS titles. I’m just not a “shooter guy.” I knew the game would be “decent.” I did not know that it would become one of my most anticipated titles this year, or that it would have me jonesing for the final version to be released, so badly, that I have honestly considered trying my hand at time travel (DeLorean style), just so I could play it sooner.
But let’s get right down to it, shall we?

Complaint #1
Unbalanced Weapons
“Use the Wraith, you win. Use anything else, you lose.” – DolphGB
He believes that the Wraith is over powered in the extreme. Apparently everyone is going to be using the Wraith rather than all the other weapons because it’s just that awesome. Apparently DolphGB ignored the fact that after two weeks most Beta testers are still using a pretty even roster of guns. If anything the Carbine and the Marksman remain the weapons of choice for a lot of gamers, myself included.
Sure the HVAP Wraith is bad ass, rocking a massive clip and shield, but is hardly overpowered. Outflanking and killing these slow moving, slow to fire, glowing (shield), walking targets, is not that hard. Sure some elite players can do some serious harm with one, but that has much more to do with the skill of the gamer than the “overpoweredness” of the weapon itself. I’d still take the M5A2 Carbine with its grenade launcher over the Wraith any day of the week. I delight in flanking a Wraith user with his shield up and popping a “one shot, one kill” grenade in his lap.
It would be lame if everyone was using the same weapon all the time. Luckily, I have not been in one single match in the last two weeks where the majority of players were rocking a Wraith and I think the chances of it “miraculously” becoming the only weapon of choice after release day to be remote. And by remote I mean “ARE YOU WHACKED ON SCOOBIE SNACKS?!”
Complaint #2
Bugs
Complaining about bugs in a Beta is sort of like complaining about getting sand in your shoes at the beach. The Beta is not a finished product and some glitches and irritations are guaranteed to exist. DolphGB IS right that the R2 Beta does have some noticeable problems with spawning. Just not to the degree that DolphGB would have you believe.
I have been in matches were I have respawned inside an inescapable room, or worse yet, respawned in the “grey zone” outside the playable area and been unable to get back in without leaving the match and rejoining. However, I’d say that, at most, its happened maybe ten times in the last two weeks. After 50+ hours of gaming, I can move past this “minor” irritation. Which I am confident will be fixed soon. If not from day one, than through a patch. It’s hardly a game ruining problem.
DolphGB is 100% right about the water though, it sucks. It does seem more like oil than water and the splash effects and waves are disproportionate and lame in the extreme. You know what though? I don’t care and I seriously doubt most gamers will either. When did water become a selling point for FPS titles anyway? Who the hell is playing R2 and thinking about the bloody water with bullet ridden chaos going on all around them?! It doesn’t effect gameplay one bit and it’s a minuscule portion of R2′s overall visual appeal. I could really give a damn whether the water is improved in the future or not.
I’m more surprised he did not mention server disconnects. I know I have had numerous problems with this issue over the past two weeks. If I have one major complaint it is that I get disconnected and/or I am unable to connect 1 out of every 5 matches I play. There’s not really any way to sugarcoat that, it sucks. I hope it is simply R2′s new online setup growing pains and not a lasting problem.
