The Sims movie concept explained: “it’s rubbish”

"Look what I found in the trash!"

Okay, “it’s rubbish” isn’t exactly what John Davis, producer of I, Robot, Alien Vs. Predator, Dr. Dolittle and the upcoming The Sims movie adaption said when talking about his future game-inspired project. As revealed back in July, EA have signed a deal with the United Talent Agency in Hollywood to produce TV and film adaptions of their games, two of which were The Sims and the Wii/DS spinoff MySims (which we, er, also revealed).

Find out what he actually said after the jump. It’s much better than “it’s rubbish”. Well, it’s a little more expansive, anyway.

In an interview with movie mogul website Collider, Davis spilled the beans on what he thought was the ideal concept for a Sims movie. Naturally (ie: unfortunately) he didn’t listen to me and make it a rom-com where the characters walk around in a robotic fashion, speak gibberish and ignore the fact that there are green diamonds floating over their heads 24 hours a day.

Nope, instead, he’s made it a zany adventure film revolving around a couple of kids, who find a magical copy of The Sims that can take things from real life and put them into the game. However, meddling too much results in things in the real world going wrong and unforeseen consequences taking place outside of the game. All we need now is Robin Williams swinging by in a raggedy old cloth and huge beard and what we basically have is a 21st century Jumanji.

Not quite, apparently. Davis cites the 80s film Weird Science as a bigger influence, where two nerds try to create a virtual ‘perfect woman’ but accidentally bring her to life in a bizarre Frankenstein-esque accident. In other words, we can expect plenty of comedic furniture re-arranging and removal of clothing in a groovy montage before the serious stuff kicks in and our main characters learn a lesson. Typical cliched movie stuff then: a bit of fun then it all gets serious.

So serious, in fact, that John Davis has a nemesis lined up. What would happen if this nemesis were to win over our comedic-yet-heroic protagonists? Generic, cynical impressions await over the page!
