[UPDATED] Rumor: New 360 Dashboard Launch

September 9th, 2008 at 8:45 pm · 8 Comments

VGChartz (someone should really tell those guys that ‘charts’ is spelled with an ’s’) had a post on their forums which had details of a supposed five hour televised launch party for the New Xbox Experience (NXE) as well as a plethora of crazy rumours including Mass Effect 2, a new Conker game and something called ‘Mad Lib’.

Wowza. Jump the jump folks.

Ok, so first things first. Word on the street is that Microsoft will start televising their five hour NXE launch extravaganza on September 25 at 7 pm EST exclusively on G4 [UPDATE: G4 have made it clear that they are not involved in airing a five hour launch and that any mention of G4 is this rumor is complete bogus. This kind of brings the credibility of the entire rumor into disrepute].

Non-G4 viewers can each the proceedings on their Xbox 360 via a stream that will probably go down as soon as the event starts. A five hour launch is all well and good, but what would they talk about? Would the hosts stand on a stage, flooded with green light, umm-ing and err-ing as they countdown to that fateful time when the NXE launches?

No of course not, don’t be so silly. During these five hours, Microsoft will be showing off a partnership with Sirius Black Satelite Radio, which will allow gamers to play Sirius radio through their Xbox 360, for a small monthly fee. The good news? It will be in-game accessible, which, for PS3 owners that are only just getting used to the magical concept of an in-game menu, will presumably work much like the current Custom Soundtracks.

They’ll also be showing off another way to spend more money on audio goodness, with the 360 Music Store. Think iTunes, only on the 360.

The third and final new addition to NXE is the ‘mad lib’ channel. No one has any idea what this is, so let’s go for some good ol’ fashioned speculation. Might it be some kind of picture in picture functionality? Or at least, that’s what the rumour poster thinks. Personally I highly doubt that., it’ll probably be a place to donate money to Microsoft or something incredible like that.

Phew! That’s enough NXE additions for one day! How about some DLC? Microsoft will apparently unveil some new Mass Effect DLC, a new Halo 3 map pack and a preview of the GTA DLC, though none of those are particularly unexpected.

Twelve new games will be shown, including Assassins Creed 2 (we already know that it’s a trilogy), Mass Effect 2 (wasn’t that a trilogy as well?) a new Conker game, a new shooter franchise from Rare and two new Halo games. I don’t really see why they’d show Assassins Creed 2 off, given that it will probably be multiplatform, but I wouldn’t worry too much, this is a rumour after all.

Finally, six Xbox Original titles will be made free for download, three of which are already on the service. Halo is the only title mentioned, but who cares? Free games are free games.

I would also expect an Xbox handheld, the PS4 announcement and a relaunch of the Rock n’ Roll Racing franchise.

[UPDATE: Microsoft have issued their standard 'no comment', in line with their policy on not commenting on rumors or speculation]

Random post on a random forum with no evidence to back it up makes for a rumour? This just in, Sony Playstation 4 will be free!

Hey, as I’ve stated elsewhere, MS needs some of those new games….ME2, AC2, Halos, in order to maximize their 2009 release schedule. The question is why? Why wait after PAX? Well, hindsight suggests it’s perfect timing.

      1) Before the fall rush of fantastic games
      2) During the RPG slam of 2009 (Tales & IU)
      3) After the critical mediocrity of Too Human ( I loved the demo though) and Summer of Arcade.

I would believe AC2 won’t make it until 2010 but the other titles I believe.

I could almost believe it until I read about the free xbox original games. Microsoft would never do that.

    • I cant wait for the new dashboard update ohh and i also cant wait for home :)

I’d be interested in the Mass Effect 2 info if this rumor is in any way true, but it seems a little far-fetched to me. Call me cynical, but those details are very specific, and one of the details (as mentioned in the update to the article) has already been debunked.

Plus, I don’t think Microsoft will so freely give away an Xbox Original download. Even on Xbox Live’s 5th birthday the Live users who had subscribed for all five years were only given $5 in MS points. But if a free Xbox Originals download actually does happen, I’m downloading Psychonauts.
