Roomah: MS hiring for work on Xbox 720

Okay, read that title again. Yup, we’ve seen speculation like this before but it looks like Microsoft has potentially let the dog out of the bag with regards to when and where Halo 4 is making an appearance. Could happen a lot quicker than you expected.

More on this after the jump (which still needs a new name. Any suggestions? Email me at yamster[at]sarcasticgamer[dot]com, especially if they’re rude).

A Microsoft job advertisement is promoting the post of “Program Manager” over at the careers website Monster. This post will involve helping to define “the next generation of gaming software technology” with the “Microsoft Halo Team”. Curious.

For this “critical new effort” those who take the job will work with Halo Team as well as “artists, designers, and other creative functions within MGS to ensure that we are building the best possible platform for content creators.” Too many quotable soundbites, so little time.

In essence, Microsoft are looking for developers to help shape the next Xbox and potentially the next game in the Halo series. The job description entails that experience with DirectX and the Xbox SDK (the development tools for the console) will be a “significant advantage” and with ‘Xbox SDK’ and ‘games’ listed as two of the job’s keywords it’s almost blindingly obvious what being a Program Manager will involve.

If Microsoft are looking for team members to develop the next Xbox platform now, does this mean we can expect to see the console itself in the next two or three years? With recent murmurings that the 360’s full potential has been unlocked swarming around, I wouldn’t be surprised if development on the next Microsoft console has been started already.

Some of you will be annoyed at the prospect of buying a new console in a few years or so since you’ve only had your 360 for a (relatively speaking) little while but once a console’s potential has been cracked it’s only time until games all look the same: you wont want Gears of War 3 and Halo 4 looking exactly the same as their predecessors, will you?

Chances are this’ll be the only news you’ll get of the next incarnation of the Xbox for a wee while, so lap it up. Or complain. Or do nothing. The comment box is there, since we’re a caring, sharing community site. Let us know what you think!

Like the late bastard that I am, I’ve only had my 360 for 3 months or so! And I’m DEFINITELY not buying a not console soon. Though in three years, anything could happen.

Sorry for double comment, but, for clarification, I’ve only had a Wii and an N64 before my recent 360 purchase.

Vlad, man not even a PS2? You’re missing quite an experience. I still enjoy my PS2 and I bought it in 2001. It took me 6 years to buy another system so I know I will not be an early-adopter next time around.

Microsoft has been thinking about the next console for some time now and I feel good about that. This generation proved short-sightedness on their part. The next round of consoles will be the closest race yet.

I may not buy it for me, but i plan on being one of those idiots out on the sidewalk waiting in line.

I need to buy another console to play the next Halo game AGAIN?!?

I hope its affordable, I can’t be spending $300-$400 every five years.

    • Console.exe says:

Thats all we need more Halo

    • kalroy says:

It is more likely related to the closing of Ensemble studios, and the need for a Halo Wars support studio.

a new xbox around 2010 or 2011 is ok in my book. hopefully my 360 can last till then. most everyone i know has had an xbox for quite some time, and most have had a red-ring by now.
