I don’t really care much for writing reviews. Unless it’s something that I’ve played that was particularly inspiring, or on the other hand complete garbage, I usually don’t muster up the ole typing fingers to put the proverbial pen to paper and write a full review. In this case, I’ll make an exception for Harmonix’s Rock Band 2 wireless guitar.
Is it shite like the original Rock Band guitar, or a step forward for the franchise’s fake plastic toys? Find out, after the jump.
I picked up a new faux Mahogany colored Rock Band 2 guitar last Thursday and put it through it’s paces. Before picking it up, I was dying for an honest review of the product, as my only time with it was playing it at PAX. While I did remember enjoying it, I also was three sheets to the wind, stumbling ass drunk, for most of that time… Unfortunately, there’s not much in the way of an honest review to be found on the internets.
I did read a buyers guide from IGN,but that ended up to be, surprise, total crap. Their “review” of the guitar didn’t even mention either the fact that it was wireless, or discuss whether there was any improvements to the strum bar, or fret buttons. Yeah, basically they glossed over it and slapped an IGN tag on it to get page views. Check out the POS “review” right here if you really want to read some crap.
Anyway, enough of the ranty. Let’s get down to business. The Rock Band 2 wireless guitar.

In my opinion the Mafauxgany Rock Band 2 guitar may look better but considering you can use the Guitar Hero guitar on both GH and RB gives it my vote.
I’ve found that the GH3 controller (on 360, anyhow) slowly gets looser and looser in the neck. Why they decided on a connector that rests metal pins on metal plates instead of something more akin to a male->female standard connector I’ll never know.
I thought the RB2 strum bar was better and thought the guitar was more comfortable to use over all, so it’s not just the looks, IMO, Harlequin
Let’s see.
Pepsi or Coke?
This is one of those choices that everyone will have a split on. Considering there is no wireless GH Explorer, I’m still sold on the GH3 Les Paul. Compatibility with ALL Xbox GH Games AND RB! Excellent frets/strum bar, lightweight, portability. The only reason for me to upgrade when GH:WT comes out is the dedicated star power button, as I’ve noticed MOST controllers are contrary when it comes to tilting. That’s just my 2 cents tho.
I thought they said that the new RB2 wireless would play GH now??
I love my new RB2 Geetarr too. It plays much better than the original and not being attached to the 360 is very nice
more of an issue for me is the GHIV guitar vs. the RB2 one. I only have the GHIII Les Paul (no drums or mic either), and I’m not getting rid of that, but it would be good to have a bass too… I guess it comes down to whether that slide bar thingy is any good.
Like Caffeinedisaster said Lono, it’s the Pepsi or Coke arguement honestly.
I mean I personally think some of your cracks at the original RB guitar are too harsh. First off, the strum bar is not unresponsive, early builds of the guitar were utter crap and the guitar broke down quickly. However, my current one works perfectly. The strum button is squishy but you do get used to it. I for one LOVE the frets. The difference with the frets for me is what makes the games different. Guitar Hero’s frets are great for Guitar Hero. The large protruding frets just seem to add to me to the larger notes. It’s also easy to hammer-on or pull-off. On Guitar Hero. I find it much hard to hammer-on and pull-off on Rock Band with the GH guitar. While the Rock Band guitar does a fine job. This merely has to do with the larger hit window for GH compared to RB. To me, it just seems the less cartoony guitar works better for the less cartoony game, and the more cartoony guitar work better for the more cartoony game. So to me they have almost no differences though I do prefer HO/PO on the RB more; however, as in a previous commenters point: The GH guitar’s stupid connectors (which are supposedly being fixed with the GH:WT guitar) slowly break down. Dirt and stuff builds up inside and breaks the connection between the pins and plates, it also leaves dents in the plates, ruining them. My RB guitar has easily outlasted my GH guitar.
I did not have the same issues as you all with my GH III guitar.
Why is there a picture of Jim Sterling holding a guitar at PAX?
Oh no you didn’t…
You know what? I’ll pick the GH3’s because you can go up and down, up and down, uuuupppp, and dooownnn
Still waiting for rock band in Bizaro Land (Australia)
