PAX Impressions: Sony’s Resistance games

September 3rd, 2008 at 1:00 pm · 3 Comments

The hype surrounding Resistance 2 for the PS3 is deafening.  Sony is pushing this game, along with Little Big Planet, as their BIG titles for the Christmas season.  It’s no surprise then that Resistance 2 was on the PAX show floor, showing off it’s multiplayer capabilities.  Also from the Resistance camp was the PSP title, Resistance Retribution, the PSP game that comes out after Resistance 2 that bridges the gap between the first game and the second PS3 game. Confused yet?  Of course not!

PAX impressions, after the jump!

Truth and Justice and I played a bit of competitive online play, in the big outdoor , small town map. When I say big, I mean BIG.  It has to be one of the biggest non-vehicle shooter multiplayer maps I’ve ever played on.  This map was made for two 30 man teams to shoot the crap out of each other on.  Sadly, they only had the game set up to play 8 v 8 and we only played against maybe ten other guys, at most. It became boring rather quickly, as we ran around looking for anybody to shoot at.

The game looks fantastic, some of the new weapons, like the chain gun are a real treat, but after wondering aloud if we were ever going to be able to shoot anyone, reflexively a Sony handler came by to assure us that we would, in fact, be able to shoot other people. I guess you had to be there for that surreal moment… Because the multiplayer was kinda boring with the 5 v. 5 stuff, we moved on to the new Resistance PSP title.

Let me just say, the Resistance: Retribution title for the PSP is the “it” game for the PSP in 2009.  No joke.

this basically mirrors the opinions i gleaned at PAX. resistance 2 was underwhelming for me (but with good reason due to small player count and laggy play). and resistance retribution was an absolute surprise. i’m really looking forward to that PSP game.
