Who says a game needs hi-def graphics to sell? Not me. You shouldn’t either. That would make you a dirty liar. I don’t associate with liars. Plus, you might anger the “Wii Sports” juggernaut and its loyal army of grandparents.
Alright, so maybe “Wii Sports” wasn’t the best example. After all, the disc comes bundled with every Wii Nintendo can manufacture. Perhaps “Mega Man 9″ would be more acceptable. The brand new 8-bit game was downloaded by a boatload of nostalgic gamers following its Monday release on Nintendo’s WiiWare service. How much is a boatload? Hit the jump to find out.
Fans of the Blue Bomber’s NES adventures have been eagerly awaiting the release of “Mega Man 9″ since the title was officially announced in late June. While PlayStation 3 owners and Xbox 360 nation must wait until Sept. 25 and Oct. 1, respectively, Wii owners have been blasting unruly robot masters for the past few days. According to VG Chartz, the response from the franchise’s rabid following has been tremendous, as 60,000 gamers purchased the game on launch day. The numbers only account for downloads in the Americas.
“Mega Man 9,” which is a revival of the Blue Bomber’s NES outings, once again pits the blue-clad warrior against eight rampaging robots as part of a world domination plot. However, this time, Dr. Wily claims that Dr. Light, not he, is behind the nefarious scheme. With the help of Rush, his trusty canine companion, and his sadly-not-chargeable Mega Buster, Mega Man must prove his creator’s innocence.
“Mega Man 9″ is the latest classic Capcom franchise to find success on a digital marketplace. “Bionic Commando: Rearmed,” which hit Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Store last month, was purchased by more than 130,000 people in the week following its release. I only hope that the success of these classic revivals leads to the re-emergence of more old-school titles. Hey Capcom, when you are finished with “Street Fighter IV,” could you please develop another “Rescue Rangers” game? My life is sorely lacking chipmunks that wear fedoras and Hawaiian shirts.
“Mega Man 9,” with its $10 price tag, is an amazing value. Not only is the game infinitely replayable, but the numerous challenges, time attack mode and downloadable content will have fans coming back for years to come. As someone who still plays “Mega Man 2″ and “Mega Man 3,” I know I won’t be putting the Wii Remote down anytime soon.

VGchartz had to have made up those numbers, or have just put a poll up. Nintendo has never released info on VC or WiiWare sales.
But yes, MM9 is awesome. Playing with the Classic controller is the best method. Mostly because the wiimote’s dpad is too small for my large thumbs to play comfortably. XD
“Let’s release a game, with old sprites, upped difficulty and no little things, that got associated with the series, like slide and charge. With the nostalgia factor we’ll make MILLIONS. MILLIONS, I say!”
Why? BECAUSE EVERY GOOD ROMHACKER COULD PROGRAM THIS IN A YEAR! Jesus Christ, Capcom! You ask ten bucks for a game, that has nearly no work put into it?
And I love how they artificially rub a nostalgic tear with that craptacular poster.
