Last week, Sting, the former lead singer of The Police, was added to the expanding group of rock legends lending their likenesses to “Guitar Hero World Tour.” Well, it appears that you can add another name to that list. Activision Blizzard has confirmed that 1975′s “Stranglehold,” as well as the musician who made the tune famous, will appear in the next iteration of the “Guitar Hero” franchise.
Never heard of the song? That is why I am here. Proceed past the jump for enlightenment.
The recently-merged publisher has confirmed that Ted Nugent will appear in Neversoft Entertainment’s version of “Rock Band.” Others involved with the title include Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins fame, Ozzy Osbourne and Jimi Hendrix. Nugent revealed his involvement in May, but this is the first time Activision Blizzard has officially acknowledged his participation.
The official press release also reiterated the company’s commitment to allowing players to engage in guitar duels against famous artists. Apparently, Activision Blizzard has a much different definition of “epic” than I do. Oregon Trail was epic. The breakfast sandwiches at McDonald’s are epic. There is no such thing as a virtual “epic guitar duel.”
Though I disliked the boss battles in “Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock,” I thoroughly enjoyed playing alongside virtual versions of Velvet Revolver’s Slash and former Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello. Fans of the series seemed generally pleased with Slash’s inclusion, but some were indifferent toward Morello’s involvement. Personally, I thought it was a great choice. He might not be considered a rock legend, but Morello is definitely known for his ability to shred.
What about Bret Michaels you ask? What about him. His attempt to revive his career through VH1′s “Rock of Love” reality show was embarrassing and his involvement in “Guitar Hero III” was forgettable. Sorry Poison fans. At least “Talk Dirty to Me” was fun to play.
Personally, I am not a big Nugent fan. Actually, I switch the radio station whenever I hear the opening of “Cat Scratch Fever.” However, it is nice to see that Activision Blizzard and Neversoft have put some serious effort into courting legendary musicians for the next iteration of the popular franchise. Sadly, it appears we are still no closer to having Angus Young appear in a music-rhythm game. AC/DC’s “Let There Be Rock” is appearing in “Rock Band 2,” but I wouldn’t hold my breath for a virtual version of the guitar virtuoso. However, I am still holding out hope that Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks will be in the final retail version of “World Tour.” Playing “Go Your Own Way” alongside the legendary singer would definitely qualify as epic.
