At PAX we all were hustling and bustling around trying to see and experience all we could. We did our best to see it all, but I did it mostly while watching the guys play the games. Then, I got my first assignment.
My first official job as an SG staff member, the guys asked me to go check out the new Tower Defense game from Hidden Path Entertainment (the guys behind the XBLA hit title Wits & Wagers). It’s called Defense Grid: The Awakening. While I had no expectations for the game, I was pleasantly surprised by the latest tower defense game.
I am not by any means any expert at tower defense games, but check out my impressions after the jump anyway.
When Lono asked me to cover this game, I was unsure of what to expect. Having played Desktop Tower Defense only a couple of times while I was bored out of my mind at work I wasn’t even sure if I’d be the right guy for the job. Turns out, I could be a new convert.
Hidden Path wasn’t showing their game on the showroom floor. Instead they did what we all did, get a room at the Sheraton. As soon as I arrived they had me sitting at my own computer and let me jump right in. As a mostly Xbox 360 player, naturally, my first question was what platforms it’s coming to. Turns out that this is coming to not only the PC, but XBLA as well.
The devs sort of explained the game to me as I was playing. The long and the short of it is that Defense Grid is a unique spin on tower defense gameplay that is supposed to appeal to all types of players. Basically, enemies spawn at a certain point and it’s up to the player to stop them by strategically building fortification towers around a base. At your base you have a power station with a number of power cores, depending on the level. The bad guys try to get to your power station and steal your power cores. Gotta love power cores.

Hmm, I’ll have to give it a try when it comes to XBLA. At least the trial version.
