What could be more portally than portal you ask? Well how about a portal shaped portal with a portal inside of it? Even if you’re a cantankerous old cynic, you have to admit that’s pretty portally, unless you, Mr-I’m-So-Smart, can think of something better… Which I very much doubt you can.
However, I don’t think my portally portal is quite what LittleBigPlanet Devs, Media Molecule, were getting at.
Hark? Is that a jump I hear?
In an interview with Kikizo, the kindly folks at Media Molecule said they were working on something “more Portally than Portal… Portal, but with scale factor”. But What could be more portally than portal you ask? Well how about a portal shaped portal with-
Oh yeah, we’ve done that bit already.
Apparently, Media Molecule met with Valve, who suggested that they work on a game together, yet unfortunately nothing came of it. Still, unfortunate events do not stop speculation, so speculate we shall.
Glasses on gentlemen.
Portal with scope is a pretty interesting concept. For those of you who have played Portal (don’t worry if you haven’t, there are no spoilers in this post other than the fact that Dark Vader is Luke’s father, Sirius Black dies and Bambi’s mother was shot to death by a hunter), you’ll know that it takes place in the Aperture Science Centre and that each of the puzzles are carried out in fairly small rooms. But what if you got rid of those rooms and made something the size of Liberty City, and let people frolic about firing portals everywhere? I’ll tell you what would happen: it would be a ton of fun. Solving portal puzzles in a wide open area certainly has appeal and maybe that’s what we would have seen if this game had gone through.
Alternatively, maybe the Media Molecule folks meant to say ‘portable’ instead of ‘portally’, meaning that they were working on a version of the popular puzzler for the Game & Watch or Gameboy Color. Or maybe not. A man can always dream…

personally, I am happy things ended up as it did.
This way PS3 fanboys get their LittleBigPlanet, and Portal won’t be overused. If Portal was milked àla EA, it wouldn’t be the same. I trust Valve with what they do, and if they shall make a sequel, It should be the same guys.
And come on, aren’t we all happy with the current Portal? and LBP will be amazing? right? right?
It reminds me of “The Room” – Peter Molyneux’s participation at GDC 05 game design challenge.

There’s this kind of “portal with scale factor” at around 7 minutes.
And the Media Molecules folks were working at Lionhead back then hey ?
