Oh those cunning Joystiqers, prowling the corridors at PAX 08. Luckily they stopped their prowling long enough to get some hands-on time with Halo 3’s latest map: Assembly.
There are some textual details after the jump, but, if you’re so inclined, you can skip them all and go straight to the video, after all it’s only my life, soul and 6 hours hard toiling that went into this article.
Sarcastic Gamer’s PAX 2008 Coverage is brought to you exclusively by:
The new map goes by the name of ‘Assembly’, though he prefers that strangers call him Mr Assembly. Unlike some of the recent Halo 3 maps, Assembly is completely original, but as we all know originality does necessarily mean good. Thankfully it looks like my qualms can be put to rest, with X3F’s Dustin Burg saying it was might be his “favorite Halo 3 multiplayer map yet”.
There appear to be some pretty interesting features, like a Grav-hammer surrounded by fusion coils. All it takes is one grenade to turn that grav-hammer wielding foe into two separate components: a dead corpse and a grav-hammer ready to be picked up and put to good use.
Assembly is a medium sized map, but can cater for both up close and long range battles or, in the word’s of Dustin Burg:
“At times it’s chaotic, other times you’ll feel like you’re stalking your prey and at other times you’ll wonder why you can’t walk ten feet without being loaded full of BR bullets.”
Now that’s the kind of map I like.
With Bungie’s mouths remaining tightly zipped, there’s no word on pricing or release date, but I do have a small dribble of speculation for you.
On the one hand Cold Storage was free, so surely we’re due for some delicious paid content, but on the other hand would they really release a paid standalone map, or are there more in the works?
Either way you can watch a video of the map below set to Benny Hill’s famous Yakety Sax (you’ll know it when you hear it).
Yakety Sax may be a well known classic, but it falters in comparison to such greats as:
Gotta love the Spice Girls! Funky.

Looks pretty good actually. This could finally be the “arena” map that “teh h4rdc0r3″ have been waiting for. Part of me wishes it was a free standalone map, but previous readings of the Bungie Updates or whatever, makes me speculate this will be part of a pack of maps. And if THAT’S the case I’ll buy them in a heartbeat.

Eoco, I love you man. You’re probably the best addition to the writing team on SG recently.
You do know that without you, this whole site would probably keep ignoring every single thing Bungie does, right? It’s sad, really, But at least you’re here.
That said, I believe that this map will, in fact, be the best map ever made for a multiplayer game. Also, did you guys notice that on this map, you can look around and see Scarabs being assembled? Sweet!
