Fable 2 or Fallout 3?

September 23rd, 2008 at 10:00 am · 42 Comments

Let’s face it, this holiday season is jam frickin packed with games.  There’s a ton of games coming out this October and November.  You’ve got Left 4 Dead, Gears of War 2, Resistance 2, Far Cry 2, Guitar Hero World Tour, End War, you name it and it’s sequel is coming out.  Well, there’s two sequels that have really got my wallet in a bunch.  Fallout 3 and Fable 2.  Both are RPG’s, both are gonna take a ton of time out of my life.

Worst part, they’re coming out within a week of each other.  Fable 2 comes out on October 21 and Fallout 3 comes out on Fallout 3 comes out on October 28th. I can’t get both, so let’s examine both games and see what’s what.

There’s two big RPG’s coming out this Fall.  Yes, there are other RPG’s coming out, but Fable 2 and Fallout 3 are the “it” games.  The AAA RPG’s of the fall.  Both could take up weeks of my time. Nowadays, it’s not really a competition for my money, it’s a competition for my time.  I simply don’t have time to play through both games. Maybe i’ll pick one up on release day and play the other one in January, when nothing’s coming out. As it stands today, I can only get one. Is it gonna be Fable 2 or Fallout 3?

Which one is the keeper?

Fable 2

Peter Molyneux has been hyping this game since before the first Fable was released on the Xbox.  All of the promises that were not kept with Fable are supposedly to be fullfilled in Fable 2.  Set 500 years after the original Fable, you’ll begin as a child and grow up with your world.  You’ll get epic quests, a world that reacts to your every action, the ability to purchase any property in the game, good and evil choices and a hell of a third person combat system.

That’s right, the combat in Fable 2 is pretty good.  You’ll have three different attacks mapped to three different buttons, the melee attack, the ranged attack and your magic attack.  All attacks are directly effected by how long or short you press, or hold the specific button down.  So, for instance, if you tap the magic button you may launch a fire ball at an enemy.  If you hold the button down, you’ll do an area effect fire attack.  If you hold down the button even longer, you’ll do a much larger and more powerful area attack.

All three attacks are customizable, depending on what type of weapon you have equipped and what kind of magic you’ve equipped. With an approximately 15 hour long story, that will surely be extended by side missions and other distractions, makes it an easy, fun, pick-up-and-play RPG. The relatively short single player game also means that I’ll want to restart the game and play it a different way which adds a palpable “replayability factor” as you make different choices during additional play throughs. All said and done, the strengths of the game easily sets this apart from the rest of the scrum, this holiday season.

That said, there are some cons.  I haven’t played the original Fable, so the story doesn’t particularly hold any place in my gamer consciousness.  Secondly, Molyneux’s reputation for over promising and under delivering is legendary and ultimately, I’m just not sure if Lionhead Studios will make the game that we all want to play.

What about that other game?  Fallout 3?  Let’s check it out, on page 2.

I can’t decide between them either. Handily though, I’m an unemployed student bum with no financial commitments, so it’s both for me! :D

  • Blackswordsman

Well I dont have a 360 so the choice is obvious for me, however if I were to make a choice I would still go for Fallout. It just looks the most exciting of all the games coming out this year. Molyneux has a history of overhyping. I have no doubt Fable 2 will be a good game, just not as good as Fallout.

  • http://www.sarcasticgamer.com Sean “Rothbart” Workman

I think it’s funny because Fable 2 comes out on October 21st while LittleBigPlanet (founded by members from Molyneux’s own Lionhead Studios) is hitting the very same day with (I’m willing to bet) a HUGE splash. Sure, they’re nowhere near the same type of game and largely won’t appeal to the same audiences, but it WILL be bought with the same kind of money… and I wouldn’t be surprised to see LBP outsell both of these games… my wallet cries.

  • http://www.sarcasticgamer.com Lono

Rothbart, thank you for your post that has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do do with my article…

  • caffeinedisaster

Still playing through the first Fable and, I’ve gotta say, I’m VERY impressed.

I WILL pick up Fable 2, after I’ve finished the first and a price drop.

What a great time to be gamer when this has become the biggest question of the season. Which do I get first? Im planning on playing through Fallout 3 first, simply because the story seems fun and Oblivion is one of my favorite games of all time. The wifey however is a huge Fable fan so she will be going for that one. So I gotta take the hit and buy both on day one.

@Rothbart, Im with you on LBP. Not sure if it’s gonna outsell the others (especially since Fallout is the only cross-platform of the three) but its gonna kick some serious arse none the less

  • http://sarcasticgamer.com/wp/index.php/author/yousty/ Yousty

The way PS3 players keep talking about LBP you’d think it’s the second coming of Jesus Christ himself. Personally I can’t wait for it to come out just so everybody will finally shut up about it.
Does it look fun? Definitely. Will I be buying it? Definitely. Will it be as great as every PS3 owner is hyping it up to be? Of course not, because no game with this amount of hype ever is.

As for your article Lono, I’m leaning more toward Fallout 3. Fable I was really overhyped and under-delivered and I’m expecting more of the same from Fable II. Personally I’ll probably just wait until reviews are out for both and then make my decision.

  • Krelith

Lol it seems like your only real issue with Fallout 3 is that it may be TOO good, absorbing you into the world and leaving you in a state of never wanting to put the controller down. That’s a plus point for me. I’d definitely go with Fallout. I’ll personally be renting fable as well though

  • mashedPenguin

I will be getting both for sure. But I will be getting fallout 3 first. I will probably pick up Fable 2 early next year.

I have been waiting too long for Fallout 3 :)

  • codespace

Just so you know, the VATS system, while amazing, is completely optional. You use it purely when you want to for additional awesome factor.

If you’re more interested in doing the shooting yourself, then by all means you can do so throughout the entire game.

  • tzsh

fallout 3 looks much better but after a played that i will buy fable 2

  • http://www.sarcasticgamer.com MightyMutt

I found myself having to make a similar decision and I’ve already decided to go with Fallout 3. Every time I hear Peter Molyenuex speak about Fable 2 I get excited but every time I hear someone else talk about their impressions of the game, I feel like I’m just being set up for disappointment.

The bottom line is Bethesda have never let me down and Lionhead have never not let me down. (Anyone else still waiting for BC?)

Also, you won’t want to hear this bit Lono (coz it justifies Rothbart’s comments) but LBP also helped to make up my mind coz there is no way I can play both LBP & Fable 2 in the same week.

Also knowing that some of my friends will be buying Fable 2 and not Fallout 3 means I’ll be able to swap games with them at some point – I won’t be able to kill their wives but hey I can live with that.

  • http://www.sarcasticgamer.com Sean “Rothbart” Workman

@Lono: it has to do with your article because I think LBP will be a bigger money-sucker than Fallout 3 OR Fable 2 in that time period.

  • Nexus

Fallout 3 FTW baby!!! (I played Oblivion like 200+ hours, still didn’t finish all the guilds)

  • Foxy

I have preordered both on amazon, but I have to say that I’m exited for Fallout, I added Fable 2 because it was 49 can $.

  • DafT

Im getting both, whether it takes selling my unnecessary organs or not.

Fable 2 is the more ‘fun’ of the two, where you can just have pure fun, and not have to explore the entire world to do so; whereas Fallout 3 I still assume will be like Oblivion and if thats the case, I cant wait. The more you explore the better the game gets.

I also have pretty tight time constraints, but I dont care. If I have to use my year’s leave that week, so be it.

  • http://www.sarcasticgamer.com Lono

@Rothbart: There’s no way in hell that LBP sells more copies on the ps3 vs. a multi-platform fallout 3 release.

    No Way.

  • kaya

@Rothbart: yes it may be a pretty fun game, but it really doesn’t have anything to do with the article and the question on hand. And no I really don’t think it will outsell fable 2 or fallout 3.

For me it’s no question. I’ve always loved fable, and fable 2 has huge potential. Just more my type of game as apposed to fallout 3. Although I will end up buying fallout 3 sometime down the road… just not when it’s released.

  • slik1000

I’m going to collect both, and miss out on something like RockBand. I’m betting that I’ll get the main storyline of Fable out of the way before Fallout, and then once I’m done in Fallout (if I’m ever done in fallout) I’ll go back to Fable and do some side missions.

@Rothbart: You’d be hard stretched to find a UK games company that doesnt have someone from one of Peter Molyneux’s former companies near the top. He basically pushed the industry over here. He and the Houser Bros MADE gaming in the UK.

  • fotios

    I am totally gonna with…….

I don’t know. I’m facing this dilemma myself.

But I think I’ll end up with Fallout. One I don’t want to be undersold again, because face it Fable was really nothing of what it promised to be. Two I already have about twenty-five bucks on Fallout at Gamestop.

ps. Its the limited edition, so I can get the lunch box.

  • watcher

    Easy Choice for me…

Fable 2 first…(loved Fable, despite the broken promises it wass still an exellent game.)

Then (after flirting with the other time suckers like saints row 2 and midnight club LA customisation, dead space, the list goes on), I hope to play Fallout 3 around January’s dry patch.

    I say ‘hope’ because I’ll be getting Fallout on PC, and by then I’ll know whether;

    a) bethesda didn’t screw up and vanilla is good
    or…
    b) bethesda releases a CS, so the mod community can make it good.

regardless I’ll be getting Fallout 3 PC, hopefully It’ll keep me occupied right up untill Empire: Total War.

Note to self: Attempt to aquire a life by summer

  • cell989

    @Rothbart
I too agree with you, LBP will be the real choice here.

Im still getting Fallout 3 on day 1, if its anything like oblivion then Im in for a real treat. Fable??? I dont know, meh.

Back to LBP, I cant wait for that one, IM afraid to either get sucked on LBP or FAllout 3 and then I wont be able to enjoy any more games for the rest of the season

  • SomeGuy

Don’t feel bad, currently, I am playing/need to play

    Crysis
    Crysis Warhead
    Gears of War
    CoD4
    Bioshock
    HL2 ep 1&2
    SWAT 4
    FEAR
    TC Rainbow 6 Vegas
    Mass Effect
    Spore
    Bionic Commando Rearmed
    World in Conflict
    Mercenaries 2

PLUS all the releases coming soon.

  • roare

I say get Fable. Like you said it’s more pick up and play. Fallout 3 is really just Oblivion set in the future with guns. Not that that’s a bad thing, but Oblivion was a whole heluva lot more recent than Fable. Plus if you played 200+ hours like everyone else, a change in scenery just isn’t going to cut it.

That being said, I’ll get Fallout around Christmas break.

  • G-man

WTF is everybody’s problem with Fable 2 (not everybody).PM has shown everything he has talked about and this is probably the ONLY game he has ever not overhyped. And the things he has shown is only a tiny part of fable 2. Fable 2 is probably the modt underexposed game that is coming right now. I know it sounds crazy but it’s true. If you even remotely like the things they have shown you of fable 2 you should buy it. And for the 12 hours of gameplay. Oblivions mainstory was also about that long but people played that game for over 100 hours (including me). It’s the other things that make you play for enourmous amounts of hours. Fable 2 and Fallout 3 is probably about equal in gametime and you should really just flash your xbox and get a copied version of both. If you don’t have flash in your country please confirm it.

  • JaXboxChick

I’ve already got my copy of Fable2 reserved and have been playing the Pub Games that everyone loves to hate on. I can’t wait for Fable2 and I have been excited about it for entirely too long. Fable 2 will be the best game in the entire world!!

Until I finish it and trade it in for the next best game to come along.

    But until then…

  • TJ

I am definatley more excited for Fallout 3 ( I even pre-ordered the survival edition from amazon, and my wife is pissed. It’s like $130. I know, I’m a sucker.) But on the other hand, after playing coop with Lono at PAX, I need Fable 2. I played the heck out of the original Fable, so I was already a little excited for it. I guess I will have to get both and power threw Fable in time for my wife to divorce me, cause once I get my grubby mitts on Fallout 3 , I might look like a Vault Dweller.

  • foss

they both look great, but fable 2 looks amazing. i’ve been waiting for fable 2 for so long and i can’t wait to finally play it!

  • rico77

I feel that you should get fallout 3 becaue games are expensive and it will be worth the $65

  • http://www.freewebs.com/lazynerdspodcast vgplayer36

I don’t plan on buying either. I don’t mean to sound like a negative nancy or anything like that, but honestly, neither of them cut it for me. Fable 2 seems like a more expansive MMORPG (only one can turn off the MMO portion if they want to), and MMORPGs aren’t my cup of tea. I prefer more strategic RPGs (but nothing Final Fantasy-esque, something more along the lines of Fire Emblem and Advance Wars). Fallout 3 isn’t doing it for me either, the RPG elements seem completely gimmicky. I’d probably rent the game for some quick entertainment, but wouldn’t buy it for the RPG elements, which I find rather slim in the game.

  • PsychoticHitman

Well, I’d have to say Fable 2.
I love the artistic style and the characterization.
I’m not particularly into RPGs so Fallout 3 is a little intimidating for me, but i’ll probably end up playing it during the new year dry season.
Regardless, Fable 2 seems to live up to the promises made from what i’ve seen thus far.

  • Apex

    im gonna get both, along with;
    Gears 2
    FC 2
    CoD WaW
and possibly fracture… i tried to narrow down this list i tried but iwant them all so much but gears definately takes priority so if i end up with only half of these then at least i will have that

  • boringsupreez

    Get fallout 3.

  • Major Lag UK

Both are definite buys for me, but Fable 2 got the pre-order, primarily because of the co-op, while Fallout 3 can wait for the Xmas break while I’m off work and my girlfriend’s visiting family in the states for a week.

Now I’ve just got to finish R6V2 and Mercs 2 (whilst still playing a bunch of Burnout Paradise, and possibly giving Mass Effect another couple of play-throughs to wring the last few acheivements out of it) in the next month…

  • jcblough

I’ve pre-ordered Fable 2, but will prob get Fall Out at some point. Having played Fall Out and Fall Out 2 – I do wonder if it will get dry. I fing the long rpg’s without a party system to get dull.

  • Riot9

I’m getting Fable as soon as it releases. I’ll get Fallout later, around Christmas.

Fable 2 is something I can play with my wife. There’s no way I’ll pass up an oportunity to bring her more into gaming. She’s actually excited. She loves the sims, and even played WoW for a short time, but wanted something in between the two.
I’ve even got her trying to build up gold in the pub games. Can’t wait for this one.

I know I’ll love Fallout 3, but it will just have to wait a few months.

  • nathan

i have to say that you’d be mad not to pick fable 2 its just so amazing for what we have seen of the game and having played a few demos at some events including fallout 3 fable 2 has more of a thrill to play with fallout 3 it just left me with nothing and i just left the game early i didn’t stick around to carry on playing but the graphics were very well done i’ll give them that however with fable 2 you just couldn’t help staying and there were people queing behind me to play until i was asked by someone from lionhead to let the others have a go. i think therefore you should go for fable 2

  • BAToutaHELL

Lono , get Fable 2 as it will be the eaiser of the two to jump back in and pick up where you left off from .

Come november it’s going to be pure mental with all the new games that will be swapped in and out of the disk tray . Left 4 Dead Is the sleeper hit of this season ( I’ve only seen screen shots in print ) , Gear of War 2 , Need for Speed and Mirror’s Edge are to name but a few of the big games.

Fallout 3 will need some severe focus and detremination to finish , my stamina ran out on Oblivion ( 80+ hours )even when there wasn’t as many games out to distract me , and when i did go back , I had lost the place on a couple of open quests and felt more like work than fun . Do yourself and Fallout 3 a favour and wait till after Christmas before you open that monster , hey mabey they’ll have some DLC out for it like lead armour for your post apocalyptic mutated mount for $5 .

You don’t need to play the origonal Fable , It was a good game that got overhyped by the Creator , which he has toned it down for this game for wich he only gives it a 9 out of 10 in his review .

Time management is factor go with Fable 2 .

  • http://none Tmoney

I think that both of these games have the ability to change the face of the gaming world. So many promises and so much hype go into new games its hard to weed out the good from the bad. I believe that one will become stale and one will prove to keep you entertained and enthused. The winner here in my eyes is Fable II. The post-apocolyptic idea that fallout 3 carries could be great but I would rather play with swords and relativly primitive guns with my companion dog in a scenic and beautiful landscape. For me the clear winner is fable 2

  • Zeratul

I really don’t like the futuristic style of Fallout. I loved Oblivion, and played it for over 2000 hours, I finished Fable:TLC 25 times, and if I was to play it again I’d still enjoy it, even tho the amount of choices is rather small compared to Fable 2. I just fall in love with the morphing hero, the architecture, the music, the jokes, the combat, the magic, the dog, the STD’s, the pub games, the pubs themselves, and all of the other things. I’ve been following Fable 2 for about a year now, you could say I’m a fanboy, but I’ve got a structured opinion if you ask me :) I love Fable 2′s style, I like Fallout 3′s style. Fable 2 is the one for me :D All hail the Molynator.

  • http://dstt.com MajorPayne304

I have been wondering the same thing because oblivion was my favorite game { i beat all the guilds and main story} but i think fable will be better you can buy any house have kids while fallout seems like a game where you just do the main quest

  • bumsick

fable 2 all the way for me for the reason of that is the world is simulated not scripted and that allows for more scope when it comes to moral choices. heres what i mean.

in fallout if i want to steal something i merely walk in to someones house while they arent there (or sleeping) and take it and that seems all in all a bit boring theres no room to improvise.

in fable 2 theres just so much more scope for example i could just walk in and grab what i want…or i can be more imaginative….i could by that pub in town set the price to free and go rob everyone while they are at the pub.(yes that will work)

dont get me wrong i loved oblivion to bits finished the story, both expansions and almost all the guilds and even found the cure for my vampirism. But personally the only thing i can see that fallout has going for it is the scale whereas fable has scale and the ability to turn any situation into a “wow” moment.

i have been following fable for a while now and from what ive seen and articles ive read (from as many different sources as i can find) they all seem to say the same thing which is that it looks set to deliver on all the promises that the sometimes over enthusiastic molyneux has made.

im not denying that fallout will be anything less than spectacular i just think that when it comes to choice, which is what im assuming people who buy either title are looking for fable brings more to the table.

thanks for reading hope i didnt bore you to much
