Let’s face it, this holiday season is jam frickin packed with games. There’s a ton of games coming out this October and November. You’ve got Left 4 Dead, Gears of War 2, Resistance 2, Far Cry 2, Guitar Hero World Tour, End War, you name it and it’s sequel is coming out. Well, there’s two sequels that have really got my wallet in a bunch. Fallout 3 and Fable 2. Both are RPG’s, both are gonna take a ton of time out of my life.
Worst part, they’re coming out within a week of each other. Fable 2 comes out on October 21 and Fallout 3 comes out on Fallout 3 comes out on October 28th. I can’t get both, so let’s examine both games and see what’s what.
There’s two big RPG’s coming out this Fall. Yes, there are other RPG’s coming out, but Fable 2 and Fallout 3 are the “it” games. The AAA RPG’s of the fall. Both could take up weeks of my time. Nowadays, it’s not really a competition for my money, it’s a competition for my time. I simply don’t have time to play through both games. Maybe i’ll pick one up on release day and play the other one in January, when nothing’s coming out. As it stands today, I can only get one. Is it gonna be Fable 2 or Fallout 3?
Which one is the keeper?
Fable 2
Peter Molyneux has been hyping this game since before the first Fable was released on the Xbox. All of the promises that were not kept with Fable are supposedly to be fullfilled in Fable 2. Set 500 years after the original Fable, you’ll begin as a child and grow up with your world. You’ll get epic quests, a world that reacts to your every action, the ability to purchase any property in the game, good and evil choices and a hell of a third person combat system.
That’s right, the combat in Fable 2 is pretty good. You’ll have three different attacks mapped to three different buttons, the melee attack, the ranged attack and your magic attack. All attacks are directly effected by how long or short you press, or hold the specific button down. So, for instance, if you tap the magic button you may launch a fire ball at an enemy. If you hold the button down, you’ll do an area effect fire attack. If you hold down the button even longer, you’ll do a much larger and more powerful area attack.
All three attacks are customizable, depending on what type of weapon you have equipped and what kind of magic you’ve equipped. With an approximately 15 hour long story, that will surely be extended by side missions and other distractions, makes it an easy, fun, pick-up-and-play RPG. The relatively short single player game also means that I’ll want to restart the game and play it a different way which adds a palpable “replayability factor” as you make different choices during additional play throughs. All said and done, the strengths of the game easily sets this apart from the rest of the scrum, this holiday season.
That said, there are some cons. I haven’t played the original Fable, so the story doesn’t particularly hold any place in my gamer consciousness. Secondly, Molyneux’s reputation for over promising and under delivering is legendary and ultimately, I’m just not sure if Lionhead Studios will make the game that we all want to play.
What about that other game? Fallout 3? Let’s check it out, on page 2.
