Calling all Heroes

September 4th, 2008 · 16 Comments

Today, Sarcastic Gamer officially announces its “big secret.”  For almost 9 months now, we’ve been working on a way to mobilize this community, and our friends from neighboring gaming communities, to make a real difference in the world we live in.  Read about it here, or jump directly to the new site.

Earlier this year, I said goodbye to my dear friend Victoria Enmon.  Unlike most teenage girls, instead of shopping and running up huge phone bills, Tori fought Leukemia for nearly a third of her life.  When she passed away in January, and during her last extended hospital stay, the SG community and many of our friends flocked to support Tori, showering her with games and gifts.

While that generosity definitely lifted her spirits,  I believe that the greatest present of all would be a cure for cancer in our lifetime.  It CAN be done.  Some forms of cancer now carry a 70% cure rate, whereas when I was growing up, a similar diagnosis was essentially a death sentence.

On Saturday, October 18th, Sarcastic Gamer, along with numerous other communities will participate in Extra Life, a 24-hour worldwide gaming marathon to raise money for research and treatment of pediatric cancer.  We have chosen to work with Texas Children’s Cancer Center here in Houston because truly one of the largest and best pediatric cancer and hematology centers on the planet.  TxCCC treats children each day from all corners of the globe.

Most importantly, all children at Texas Children’s get the same innovative care, regardless of their family’s ability to pay.

Please sign up today to fight cancer with us on October 18th.  Then, tell your friends and family what you are up to, and send them to your personal fundraising page to sponsor you starting at just 1 dollar an hour!  Donations are tax-deductible and 100% of those funds go DIRECTLY to help fight cancer.

Let’s stand together as a community, shoulder-to-shoulder with the families of children fighting something they shouldn’t have to.

Play Games.  Heal Kids.

Extra Life starts now.

      This sounds like a pretty innovative way to fuse gaming with a very good cause.

      Just one question. Is it going to be just you generally play games for 24 hours, or is it kind of like a 24-hour gamer-night-day-night, with groups set-up and stuff.

      Yeah, I guess this is better than Doc’s original plan to take over the world and make everyone wear SG t-shirts. :-P

      @Chewy and ALL

      If you have something planned that day, just make up the hours you miss. The spirit of the thing needs to transcend the literal definition.

      You can do it Chewy
