When I logged onto Wired today and saw this post, I failed to stifle a pompous chuckle at Wired’s obvious lack of calendar month recognition skills. But these pompous chucklings were soon brought to a halt as, half way through my chuckling routine, a thought crossed my mind: ‘what if this isn’t an incredibly amusing April Fools joke?’.
That thought flew out my mind and was immediately replaced with a different one: ‘can you buy chili mayonnaise?’. Before long both the ‘what if this isn’t an incredibly amusing April Fools joke?’ and the ‘can you buy chili mayonnaise?’ thoughts were locked in an epic battle of cognition and consciousness until eventually the former prevailed by thrusting his Sentient Lance of Percipience into the Chilli Mayonnaise’s Heart of Awareness, and I finally started to write things that were relevant to this article.
While World of Warcraft is pretty addictive, it can also be fairly boring. At the moment, bored folks wandering the world of Azeroth have to twiddle their thumbs and sing to themselves for amusement, but from Thursday they can twiddle their thumbs, sing to themselves and play Bejeweled!
Now this is no ordinary shoddy Bejeweled replica that I made in PowerPoint. No, no, no. This is a 100% guaranteed official PopCap Games product that will be seamlessly integrated into World of Warcraft.
When asked why Blizzard weren’t objecting to have another company’s game in their product, a PopCap spokesman said:
“I think there may be some Bejeweled fans over there.”
Ho ho ho, nice joke there PopCap spokesman.
Anyway, this may all seem very ‘meh’ up till now, but here’s the interesting part. Before any of this was announced or planned, a student at San Jose State University made himself a replica Bejeweled game called Besharded to pass the time during moments of boredom. PopCap found this game to be so incredibly excellent, that instead of suing his ass and sending him to prison for copyright infringement, they hired him to make a version for WoW.
And they all lived happily ever after. The end.
Below you can find pictures of the new official Bejeweled game, and the unofficial version, Besharded.
