Your photo-laden guide to changing your PS3’s hard drive

September 4th, 2008 · 8 Comments

Face it: that paltry 60GB PlayStation 3 you bought was never going to be futureproof. There was no way you’d fit everything that Sony had up their sleeve onto your factory-spec hard drive. Still, since the PS3 takes plain old 2.5″ laptop hard drives, they’re easy to switch and expand, with no official hard drive namby pamby to go through. In these times of Home, HD movie downloads and multi-gigabyte game downloads, it’s time to think about expansion.

With this in mind, a little guide would be pretty sweet right now. And here it is! With photos!

First up, you need four things to replace your PS3’s current hard drive.

You’ll need your PS3, a toolkit (well, some screwdrivers), an external hard drive (or very large USB pen drive, as big as your PS3’s current hard drive) and of course your brand new 2.5″ laptop hard drive. For super compatibility, try and get a hard drive of the same type as your PS3’s factory spec one - I personally vouched for a 100GB Seagate Momentus to replace my PS3’s 60GB Momentus.

The theme? Graffiti. Lovely. And official.

First up, you need to back up your current PS3 hard drive. To do this, hit up System Settings, choose “Backup Utility” and select “Backup”. This can take anything from a few minutes to over an hour. All done? Time to open ‘er up! Page two, awaaaay!

      Great way to void your warranty :)

      @ Console.exe Im fairly sure that unless you open up something else that this does NOT void your warranty.

      Under sub heading ‘IMPORTANT’ point 12.
      I have copy and pasted for you :)

      And also dont muck around with electronic equipment unless you are certified to do so, as you can cause yourself harm and the worst of all the Console harm. PS3’s are mighty expensive!!!!!!

      I have a question, I have a lot of game-shared games that I’ve got from my friends, if I buy a new HDD and back my old one up, when I restore it to the new one, will I still have those game -shared games?

      @DolmenRage
      I believe as long as you back those games up you will be fine. I have not tried but I believe that is the point of backing those files up.

      All instructions to change your HD are in PS3 manual, page 14: Removing/Replacing the hard disk.

      No,it does not void your warranty. Just call Sony and ask about it. They’ll give you the same answer that they gave me: it does not break the warranty.

      It is an easy process. The only problem I have come across is soft screws, so be careful you dont strip them. You will have a harder time getting them out.
