5 Lesser-Known songs that should be in Rock Band 2

September 25th, 2008 · 27 Comments

We all have our list of songs that should be in our favorite music game. Most of these lists contain high-profile songs or artists like Tenacious D or Metallica, but I wanted to take a different route.

Something strange happens to you after you play a game like Rock Band for a while. Or at least something strange happened to me. Whenever I hear a song now, I listen more closely to the difference between the lead guitar and the bass, or I listen for an awesome drum part or a difficult vocal. Well, when listening to some music on my mp3 player (or PSP, as some call it) I heard some lesser-known songs that would be perfect for a game like Rock Band 2.

Follow the jump to see my list.

All the links are to YouTube videos with the best versions of the songs I could find.

Good Charlotte - March On - I was first introduced to ‘March On’ from a World of Warcraft machinima video. Yes, I am a nerd. In any case, the song features not only a pretty cool sounding guitar part, but the bass part would be pretty fun as well. The drums sound a bit repetetive, but not every song is perfect for all four instruments. The vocals would probably be in one of the easier categories, but definitely fun to sing along to.

Breaking Benjamin - Unknown Soldier - Most gamers know Breaking Benjamin from their Halo 2 song, ‘Blow Me Away.’ It was in watching a YouTube video for this that I found ‘Unknown Soldier,’ and it’s been part of my music collection ever since. It sounds like most of the instruments get at least one good interesting part in the song, though the lead guitar might be a bit boring during the verses. The vocals sound like they could be a bit difficult if you don’t know the song, but nowhere near the Impossible range.

Dry Cell - I Confide - I found this one looking at a Dragonball Z video. Yes, I’m still nerdy. The focus here is definitely the vocals, as the other three instruments sound a bit repetitive during the main verses, but also get a little crazy during the chorus. There’s also a pretty fun-sounding guitar part towards the end. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from my many hours playing Rock Band 2, it’s that many fun songs feature some repetetive sequences, and it sounds like the ones found here would actually be fun to play.

Butthole Surfers - Dracula From Houston - This one is found on the Scrubs soundtrack, and I probably never would have even heard of it otherwise. Then again, I don’t get out much. ‘Dracula From Houston’ just sounds like a fun time for every member of your virtual band, even if the singer will be more of a… talker during the song. While I’ve never personally played the drums in Rock Band, I’d bet they’d be a blast in this one.

Superman - Lazlo Bane - Alright, so this one isn’t so unknown, as anyone who has ever watched Scrubs has heard a part of this. But who would have ever considered it for a game called Rock Band? Well, I think it’d be a perfect fit. The lead guitar gets to play an awesome banjo part, the bass sounds like a fun time, the vocals are just awesome, and the drums… well, the drummer gets to drum. The only problem is, there’s no way to play the harmonica into the mic for the part.

So there you have it. Am I spot on? Or off my rocker? I’d also like to know how many people have heard of these songs, because I seemed to stumble onto all of them except for ‘Superman.’ Sound off in our forums and let me know just how you feel!

so what you’re saying is rockband would benefit from five songs that aren’t very good?

    • 2 Yousty // Sep 25, 2008 at 2:14 pm

Props for suggesting the Scrubs song.

      Best. Show. Ever.

I own Breaking Benjamin’s “Phobia” album, so I am quite familiar with “Unknown Soldier.” The others I had never heard of. However, I will check them out. Especially, “Dracula from Houston.” That sounds too awesome to be bad.

@Pillowfort - I’m saying that Rock Band has such an ease of expansion, that they can put songs in that not everyone likes. You think I care about “Hanging on the Telephone” by Blondie? I don’t, but someone does because you can download it.

As for these songs not being very good, I personally think they are really good. That’s just my taste, hence why this is an opinionated article.

I dunno if it’s been reported here, but all of ACDC’s ‘Live at Donnington’ was leaked from some Walmart listing, so I have my fingers crossed for that.

      @ Ani:

I was just being a dick, that Dry Cell song is okay. I’m a big fan of different time signatures so I fully back a song in 6/4 appearing on rockband.

And they don’t really have the ability to put out any song for just anyone, there’s got to be a reasonable rate of return if they’re going to go to the effort of purchasing rights for the music they intend to sell.

The Lazlo bane song, I can say without being a fan, would sell like hotcakes what with the amount of scrubs fans out there.

Well, Animathias, I’ve never heard of any of those songs except for the Scrubs song, but I’ll check into them and give you my Official, Official SG Rock Band Connoisseur (there you go Shaney), opinion on them.

I almost didn’t publish this article because he was actually advocating Good Charlotte… Ugh, i just threw up in my mouth a little bit…

      I think I speak for everyone when I say…….

      DUDE,

You’re getting banjo in my Rock Band…..

      Cut it out!

    • 11 caffeinedisaster // Sep 25, 2008 at 3:08 pm

      Needs some

      Three Days Grace
      Finger Eleven
      Breaking Benjamin
      Queensryche
      Seether
      TOOL
      Slipknot
      Stone Sour

A lot of the songs are just crappy college rock.
The Sonic Youth - Teenage Riot song put all of us to sleep.

They have to get some music from The Tunics

      Listen Here:www.last.fm/music/The+Tunics

      Best songs :In the city
      Cost of Living

    • 13 TexasWatermelon // Sep 25, 2008 at 3:23 pm

I like all of the songs except the Good Charlotte song, but none of these songs would make it into RB because none of these bands are from the 80’s and Harmonix knows everyone on the Rock band Forums are going to complain about the songs.

    • 14 Manni // Sep 25, 2008 at 3:32 pm

I´m glad there´s no Simple Plan in your list ^^”

I´d love to see ANBERLIN in a music game and…THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM…and some more of RISE AGAINST :)

    • 15 Lono // Sep 25, 2008 at 3:36 pm

I’m still waiting for a Pearl Jam pack…
      Seriously harmonix, what’s up?

    • 16 Grantly // Sep 25, 2008 at 4:57 pm

      ^ This.

I know I’m going to get a lot of crap for this, but why can’t they put one, just ONE My Chemical Romance song in the game? Is that really so much to ask?

    • 17 PMS Harlequin // Sep 25, 2008 at 5:51 pm

      @Grantly

They were already featured in Guitar Hero II

    • 18 athrak // Sep 25, 2008 at 6:34 pm

      “stereophonics”
      “sublime”
      “moby”
      and “bend sinister”

    • 24 rlm2112 // Sep 26, 2008 at 11:32 pm

More Rush, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, would be great. The 2 bands either of them still need are Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd

    • 25 ASmellyPiratHkr // Sep 30, 2008 at 8:41 pm

Needs more acoustic stuff, the hard rock business get’s a bit old after a while.

    • 26 caffeinedisaster // Oct 2, 2008 at 11:36 am

      @ athrak

      Nothing wrong with Banjo.
Not really suitable for ROCK band tho.
