What the reviewers didn’t tell you about Too Human

August 25th, 2008 at 12:00 pm · 49 Comments

I’m playing through Too Human right now. My overall take on the game is very positive. Yet, I’ve read so many reviews straight ripping the game. After reading most of the “big” name reviews, I’m left scratching my head and wondering, “did these people play the same game that I did?” Sure, there’s some details that could have been tweaked, but overall, I’m having way too much fun too notice the defects that are too minor in Too Human.

Here’s what the reviewers didn’t tell you about Too Human, after the jump.

First off, the game is seamless. There’s no loading times. Ever. The only time you ever wait for something is when you die, which is a penalty in and of itself, because you’re usually jonesing to get back into the fray for a little payback at that monster that ended your asskicking career way too early for your liking.

Second, the save system is one of the best that I’ve ever seen in a game. You don’t really notice it because you’re never upset with it. The game saves itself after every encounter, every time you tweak your character, every time you pick up good loot, it’s just constantly saving. Without any loading or wait time. It’s just like I described above, it’s seamless. The only way you ever know that the game is saving is because a little icon is in the lower right hand corner. In a game where picking up the best loot and keeping it for later is of paramount importance, this save system is absolutely essential to keep you from doing something boneheaded like quitting without saving for the past hour, which I’ve done before in many a game.

The framerate. I know that I did say on the podcast that I thought I noticed a bit of a framerate hitch while playing. Well, that was about 20 game hours ago. Since then, I have not encountered one slow down ever in this game. When you have so many enemies on screen, with a draw distance that has no end, that’s impressive, especially in an action RPG.

Overall, I’m impressed with the game. I’d recommend it to just about anyone. It has a ton of battles, lots of strategery, button twitch goodness, a decent story, but overall, it’s that kind of game that just makes you want to press on for 15 more minutes, until the sun comes up.

On the other hand, there are things that need to be tweaked in the game.

    • Finally, a solid and fair review of a game that has taken on far too much negativity that was not deserved. Good for you Sarcastic Gamer…good for you!

    • jcblough says:

Damn excellent man. I wonder who pissed off who on this deal to get the fall out that Too Human got. I’m picking it up Thursday for a big long weekend binge.

    • Gingerbob says:

      WHAT?!

What kind of review should be based on the fact that there are no loading times, or the save game feature is the best EVAR?

If thats the case then the Orange Box would have scored a 6, and Too Human a 9. Does that sound correct?

I myself played the demo to the end and will not be buying it, ever. It’s a Gamecube game in shiny clothes.

    • Nate says:

Great review. I know that I am highly enjoying the game…I just can’t find enough time in the day to play it.

    • It’s still a personal opinionated review. I think those big websites are entitle to their own as well. The game doesn’t suck, it’s just that it suck for the people who don’t like it.

    • Lono says:

@ Gingerbob: I clearly stated that it wasn’t a review, but simply a discussion of things that were overlooked and my thoughts on the game.

      Keep on hatin’ on…

    • komrad says:

so you were ok with the camera having it own inferior mind ? I love this game. on my 3rd go round with beserker…The things that bothered me were Camera and Invisible walls. I found myself insulting the camera and invisible walls out loud… ” What? I cant clear this 12in curb as a god?… FU!”
The menu and maps I agree with but were more about polish and UI design than a gameplay obstacle.

    • koves17 says:

great article. this game is very fun to play indeed and it is also the reason that I will not be listening to anyones reviews anymore. if you like it great! if not, move on and find a game that you do enjoy. and now that you mentioned it Lono, I do notice the game saving every 10 seconds or so and that there aren’t any load times. gotta go and play me some more right this moment :)

    • Eoco says:

What about the combat controls? The fact that all the combat is controller purely by the analog stick, just makes it so easy and detached. Whereas in other games combos may require several button presses to be pulled off, in Too Human sliding across the floor, stabbing guys in the back only requires a point of the analog stick.

    • Lono says:

I love the controls. I really enjoy the analog stick fighting mechanic. It’s all about personal taste I guess… There’s still skill involved in strategy and combos, fierce attacks and juggling. There’s way more than just “pointing the analog stick.”

    • Mindspat says:

I absolutely agree, to a point. As I am enjoying the game I also was a little miffed on many of the negative reviews reading almost as if they were canned articles created by authors who’ve never played the game. Too many things were left out which is clear and obvious as soon as one begins the game.

My negative dings on the game:

The Camera PoV does occasionaly do things you do not wish it to. It’s frequent enough with me that at least once every 20 minutes I find myself fighting to look in the direction I actually want to go.

Co-op limitations. This is a major issue with me. The game needs a 4 way co-op, plain and simple. This in of its self is Too Human’s greatest flaw. While it’s mountainous fun to play 2 way co-op it would have been an absolutel riot if there were a means to play with 4 players online.

And I agree with the poor itemization and statistical displays of equiping and updating your character, this is a nasty fault by the developers and there’s no excuse for its failure.

Other then this, I enjoy this game a LOT. I’ve played it more then Assasins Creed, Halo3, Gears of War and GTA4 combined! The only gmame I’ve spent more hours playing on the 360 is Mass Effect. ;)

    • Mindspat says:

      @ Eoco; combat controls & combo’s

If you thin it’s as simple as pushing one analog stick in a single direction then you’re grossly mistaken.

There’s a plethora of combinations to be had through utilizing a sequence of close to 8-10 different combinations, if not more!

If you are merely pressing the 1 analog stick in a single direction to slide around, as you claim, then you will suck beyond all belief when attempting to play this game.

    • Eoco says:

      @Mindspat

      Seemed to work for me.

      @Lono

Yeah, some people love it, some don’t. Whether a game is good or not, is USUALLY pretty subjective, so if you (or anyone else) enjoys it, then who am I to criticise?

    • Lono says:

@Eoco: it’s the discussion that’s most important. Disagree all you want.

    • jcblough says:

How can a review not be an opinion? That’s all a review is. A painfully long opinion. And I have to ask, what game couldn’t be called a prettied up gamecube game? I guess COD 4 is just a reskinned Golden Eye if you get down to it.

    • LC says:

you can just as easily disregard any site that offers praise for too human.

the characters are the same, I have played every single one.

They all use the same mechanics with very minimal difference like healing for the bio engineer, better juggling for the champion and the defenders knockdown…

trolls and the spider thingies and the fat floating guys are all complete pricks if you play as anything but the defender, surrounded by elves, polarity enemies and some over sized prick with a hammer that repeatedly knocks you down is endlessly frustrating.

trying to target there arms while your character repeatedly targets other enemies.. what do you do? kill them and get knocked down and die or try to kill the arm?

I’m playing the berserker now level 22 or 23 or so and I went human path and have put points into increasing ruiner damage/area, ruiners and melee are useless against the trolls, spiders and fatty floaters.

and a personally aggravating mechanic is how slow the characters power walk/jog? can’t they run? They extended the length of the game by making your character run slow.

I also take offense at those who fire off against the negative reviews, there is alot more bad here then good and your opinion all hinge on there “just over reacting” too human is good,

please. Stop acting like your dennis dyack and too human does no wrong. the mixed reviews are deserved, theirs enough wrong with too human that people should know that before they waste $60 on this game who’s fun and novelty only last an hour or so before frustration with poor design decisions set in.

I say that having only payed $35 at toys r us for too human and I will be trading it in in a few days to recoup my loss.

    • Lono says:

      I couldn’t disagree more LC…

    • Rcwpong says:

I’m just guessing here but it looks like Eoco is judging the difficulty of the full game by what he played in the demo. All I can say is, it gets much harder. Just pointing the stick will ensure that you see the Valkyrie multiple times when the later enemies come bearing down on you.

@LC – Berserker is a tough class to start with. You’re a melee glass cannon. I use Ruiners to clear out the areas around the troll, jump and tap both sticks towards them for a finisher to take their chest armor off, then mount/kill. Guns are not your specialty (which kinda sucks for part of the second boss battle) but if you use everything else you’re given including Fierce attacks as your primary ranged attack, you can really rip through the enemies.

    • Saccia says:

Nice little article Lono. Can’t wait for your actual review…. which you will have… right?

I played the demo. I enjoyed it. I got the feeling there was more to it and that’s a good thing. The game’s combat mechanics were different for the type of game that it is. It had some mystical appeal to it so it has me wondering where the story is going to go.

But, I’m kinda sitting on the fence with my $60. I’m not sure if I should spend it on this or wait for a more “worthy” game. I need your review to help me decide so play faster! :-)

    • Gingerbob says:

@ Lono: I never said that it was a review either, you were trying to say that reviewers should take these things into consideration when reviewing a game. I think that in these days of next-gen gaming, loading times and quick saves should be staple in every game (that requires them).

But does longer load times, awkward (and slow) saves and framerate issues make Too Human better than Oblivion (which suffers heavily from all of the above).

      No, it doesn’t.

Too Human isn’t as great as some people say it is, but not as bad as other games (like The Outfit).

It looks as though this will be like gaming Marmite, some will love it, some won’t, but my money is on that I’ll be able to pick it up cheaply in the next few months.

    • xxxMonkey says:

This isn’t the only decent – and fair – view of Too Human. The review at Play.tm is probably the best I’ve read thus far… and they gave it the highest score online as far as I know (88).

Well worth checking out if you have a few minutes.

    • RuddigerPez says:

Never really liked sarcasticgamer.com, and after reading this my opinion hasn’t changed. Start by stating that you are playing through the game right now, and that implies that you haven’t finished it yet. Perhaps you haven’t seen the whole picture then? Maybe the ending sucks. I don’t know and don’t care, I don’t even own the game. What I do care about is people who get so upset when others don’t like the game they like and need to complain about it. If you like something others don’t like, fine, write about how you like it instead of how everyone else is wrong.

    • RK1 FaMiCuS says:

Wow, it looks likes everyone is giving Lono the Kevin Pereira treatment. Let me guess, all you people are going to call Lono childish for doing this just like you did to Kevin.

    • raw153 says:

I think it’s great that you enjoyed the game, but why does everyone else have to? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion so go play the game and quit worrying about what other people think. I have yet to play the game and will decide for myself when I finally do play it, thanks for the input though.

    • Lono says:

@RuddigerPez: Thanks for your input, but you couldn’t come off more wrong than if you said the sky was yellow.

This site is dedicated to gamers airing our personal opinion on gaming issues and my issue of the day is my thoughts on Too Human. I’m not complaining, but merely stating my opinion on a game that so many others have already shared their thoughts on.

Oh and by the way, I flat out said that I hadn’t finished the story, so look up the word “implied” in the dictionary and then hit yourself in the face with it. Then come correct the next time you come back here.

BTW, I’ve logged over 30 hours of co-op and regular story mode in the game, but this article wasn’t a review but my impressions of the game, as I also CLEARLY stated for morons like you.

Have a great day and welcome to Sarcasticgamer.com!

    • LC says:

      @Rcwpong

I didn’t start with the berserker, I actually spent over ten hours in the demo trying all the classes and playing them again to see difference in the skill trees.

In the retail version I started with the defender because in the demo I hated getting knocked down.

I try to use the fierce attack on the polarity enemies, but haven’t used it much otherwise.

I was playing earlier and found I could jump and do finisher moves on trolls/floaters.

What strategy do you use against the spiders?

    • komrad says:

LC. As Beserker, I save my ruiners for the spiders and regain it smacking about the little guys about. As beserker your ruiners come fairly quickly, i find.

    • Eoco says:

      @Lono

Oh Lono, I love your replies.

“so look up the word “implied” in the dictionary and then hit yourself in the face with it.”

      Genius!

    • Edgar says:

      Sorry, but the demo sucked.

    • LC says:

the berserker doesn’t juggle very well but, I use laser pistols with a juggle rune and with the skill trees your right he does build them up pretty fast.

I get 200 on combos regularly, and over 300 a few times, what are you guys getting on your combos?

    • LC says:

the demo sets you up for the biggest blow with the retail game, level 9 or 10 you go from 3 points to 2 per level…. yugh.

    • komrad says:

one thing that would be cool is if you could respec for free until level 10 perhaps, prior to picking cybernetic or human/combo.

@LC – lol I didn’t notice the switch from 3 to 2 there until you wrote that! I’m thinking that the one point you get at 4 or 5ish prolly made me think it was arbitrary… or maybe i should stop drinking mead while playing…

    • komrad says:

one thing that would be cool is if you could respec for free until level 10 perhaps, prior to picking cybernetic or human/combo.

@LC – lol I didn’t notice the switch from 3 to 2 there until you wrote that! I’m thinking that the one point you get at 4 or 5ish prolly made me think it was arbitrary. but you’re right!

    • LC says:

I noticed when I was trying to level 3 perks at once and ran out on the third one, the wtf followed…lol

On my defender there asking for 32k or some nonsense for next respec, I initially started with the spider bot that fires a laser cause i enjoyed that in the demo but found it didn’t work so well for me in the retail, my last respec I did on the cyber path tree so I could get the armor bonus out of the last perk.

And I’m thinking mead either helps or could incredibly hinder playing, I’ve had to resist the urge to toss my controller more then a few times.

    • Blondie says:

LC, as a matter of fact the Berserker class is perfect for taking down trolls, spiders, and the floating guys. Whether you use some air attacks or the bear ruiner, they go down in no time.
The one and only frustrating thing I’ve ever found about the Berserker is that he sucks for a couple of the bosses.

    • Archer04 says:

I wanted to enjoy Too Human so much it hurt but the game ended up being a disappointment. First its like Russian Roulette if you’re not the bio engineer because you cant heal yourself unless enemy or crate randomly drops a health. Second, the Hell level where there is 60 enemies shooting guns and youre dieing 3 times for every encounter with that stupid 30 second death sequence. The game is built to be a co-op game and you can feel that playing through the single player experience. The should be fun and I wanted it to be fun so bad but theres more frustration than fun for you. Thats why its not worth 60 bucks

    • damon says:

I agree this review. I was disappointed to hear about negative comments. After playing the demo finally a review thats true regarding too human.Well done.

    • gsgs says:

      sarcastic idiot ;)

    • sifer2400 says:

i thought so far its great im playing as the beserker and just maskering things left and right so far im 4 hrs into the game yea people dont forget the dogeing B button it helps A LOT

    • Caid says:

Here’s my thoughts. I’m playing as the beserker.
The camera is just fine about 99% of the time. No map… meh, I can get by, I have a good sense of direction. My biggest gripe with this game is how often I die. I feel the greatest when there are a tonne of the little goblins on the screen and I can pull off some godly moves just using the analogue stick. Quite frankly, it’s brilliant.

As for dying again and again, this in my opinion is the most likely reason why people give it such a terrible review. There are times where Baulder just doesn’t respond to the dodge command, or where your swords just don’t do any damage to an enemy, but each of his attacks deal a great amount of damage to you.

Dying in this game is about the only thing that takes away from an otherwise beautiful experience. I get so angry when I die 4 times on one group of bosses, and I bloodywell hate the game. But I feel a craving to play it again not long after taking a break.

I realise the death sequence is supposed to be a penalty, but given the fact that you just start again right where you left off, they might as well update the game to lose that whole valkyrie cutscene. It’s annoying.

If I were to review this game, I’d give it an excellent score. If I were to review it after dying 4 times, who knows how anger would influence my opinion.

Anyway, there’s my two cent’s on the whole Too Human experience.

      Caid

    • Cerubus says:

Right ON! So true, I just can not believe those reviews, they are filled with misinformation, it’s outright disgusting. I’m definitely taking future reviews with a grain of salt, hell I’m questioning why even read them anymore.

The game’s not perfect, but it’s amazingly fun, and doesn’t deserve the outright lies in those reviews.

    • rogg182 says:

I completely agree with Lono on this one, this games not deserve the amount of negative reviews its recieved. If you love dungeon crawlers this is a great game, yes its worth the $60. I’m on my second playthrough (wasting alot of time in cyberspace) and I’m starting to develop a greater appreciation from the armor and weapon permutations. As far positive reviews go, I seem to remember X-play gave it a 4 out of 5 with the multiplayer issues being the cause of the lost point.

    • Rcwpong says:

@LC yeah since I’m a human ‘zerker I can usually stay above combo level 3. A ruiner does more damage the higher level your combo is. 3+ usually takes the spiders out in one shot unless they’re elites. Big fan of the 2in1 ruiner combo so it only costs half a combo level to activate.

“Ooh a dark elf leader/spider, sliiiiiiiide BEAR IN YO FACE!”

    • IkariX says:

Finally, someone who likes to see the good in the bad. Too Human isn’t half as bad as people and reviewers say

    • Scott says:

Couldn’t agree anymore, love the game. The looting alone and classes give it so much replay value. If your not into looting or maxing out characters the game will get old for others so this isn’t a game for everyone. The combat system is great when your lvl becomes high and you start smacking guys around all over the place, it never gets old. I just wish more weapons had other finishing moves instead of the same ones
The camera system isn’t that bad since you can adjust it just by pressing LB. The auto-aim is probably its biggest problem. It can be a pain during boss battles when you got other enemies running around. The loading though is just hidden in the cutscenes. Some you can skip but others you can’t.

    • TOO KINGS says:

I’m with you Lono. I can’t put my finger on it, but I can’t stop playin this freakin game. My roomate has been tortured by the sub-woofer when I’m using a laser cannon. That bass drops like an atomic bomb.

I never do this but I marathoned for like 12 hours on saturday. In co-op. I enjoyed every min. of it. Until I realized how long i’d been playing for, dear God.

    • LC says:

I got my defender to level 50 today. at level 40 you only get 1 point per level, they need to go back to the drawing book and learn how to make leveling up fun. seriously some of these bonuses amount to a 1 percent increase, wtf is that?

    • Syrionus says:

Agree, the reviewers played for a few hours and chucked it in the garbage. I played until I felt like I mastered the controls and then realized, i was having a blast with this game. This game deserves an 8 to an 8.5.

    • supra shoes says:

Too Human , never heard this before. is it another new game?
