US Playstation Owners Going Home Soon?

August 7th, 2008 · 4 Comments

Just a quick note to let everyone interested in getting access to Playstation Home to check out the PS Home theme put on the PS Store today as Sony will be picking folks that have expressed interest (ie. downloaded the theme) to trickle into the Home beta as they deem fit. No word on who, how many, or even when this will happen, but I think we’re pretty safe saying that you’ll have LESS of a chance getting in if you don’t check out the new Home XMB theme.

With Sony making such a visible effort to gather additional beta members it seems pretty obvious to me that someone, somewhere is finally shifting gears in this whole project and we’re (hopefully) going to see a fairly rapid influx of functionality and (hopefully solid) third party support. I’m definitely excited over the potential impact Home can make, but I’m equally expecting the first batch of people let in will suffer from severe OverHypeâ„¢, running around the Home areas looking for stuff that, well… isn’t there yet.

According to the Playstation Blog, Sony will be picking those people who are most active on the PSN to go into the beta. Presumably that means playing multiplayer, rather then just the people who download the most.

According to the same post, SCEE are getting in touch with people with European accounts “very shortly”, so nobody need get on their high horse this time around about European Playstation owners being treated as second class citizens.

@Kiltman: Sure about that? At least the Americans and Japanese can voice their interest in the beta, at a minimum. SCEE are just saying “okay you’re in it, you’re in it, you’re in it” and ignoring consumer responses to the idea of a beta.

@Yamster: In America (and presumably Japan) everyone is able to “enter the draw” and then Sony picks the people who are most active. In Europe, Sony looks over everyone’s activity and sends invitations to those who use it most.

It’s pretty much the same thing backwards. If you’re not very active then you have no chance wherever you are. The only difference is the risk that invites will be given to people who aren’t interested and I’m sure SCEE will factor that into the number of invites they send out. Also, of course, there’s no guarantee that Americans who declare their interest will really get involved in the beta.

Until everyone on my friends list, (ie the people I want to play games with.) are all in HOME, it remains, for me, utterly useless.

Until everyone can meet up with their friends and launch into games, chat about games, etc etc, it IS nothing but the Second Life clone it has been accused of being.

This closed beta they’re offering is absolutely worthless in my opinion and I surely am not willing to jump through hoops for it. That said, I enthusiastically look forward to the day when HOME becomes what it is meant to be. The day they open it up to everyone.

OPEN UP THE EFFING BETA AND LET US GET ON WITH IT!
