Too Human is Good. (What? You wanted a better headline?)

Anyone who has played a Dungeon Crawler knows that the meat of the game is the loot, and Too Human is no exception. For the first 10 to 15 levels of the game, you’re going to be constantly upgrading and selling equipment. However, this slows down in the later levels and you become more picky about what you equip and what you sell, depending on your class, alignment, and skill tree. Simply equipping the item with the best armor value is a quick way to net yourself a repeated string of deaths. Your equipment becomes even more customizable with many higher level items having empty rune slots, allowing you to pick and choose the stats and abilities you want, sometimes making a cheaper item more valuable to your character than an epic blueprint.

The actual gameplay of Too Human could use a few tweaks here and there. Sometimes it’s difficult to attack the exact target you want to, and other times the camera gets in the way, but all in all it works quite well. The meat of the game is building your character the way you want to with the gear you want to, and that part, as well as the inventory works perfectly fine. Considering this is the first Dungeon Crawler of any note to hit the 360, and it’s also the first of a trilogy of games, I’d say it’s off to a good start. Is it game of the year material? Not even close. It’s definitely not for everyone. But if you do find yourself enjoying the game, you would be surprised just how many hours of entertainment you’re going to get for your $60.

If I absolutely had to give this game a score, I would give it a B+. There are some problems with the game, but none of them break it. If you’re sitting on the fence of whether or not to pick it up, the demo is actually a pretty good representation of the full product. It will give you a taste of what’s in store, and begin to hint at some of the awesome loot you would get in the retail game. With a level cap of 50, 5 character classes, and a whole lot of loot in between, I’d say this game has the replay value of any online shooter out there.

So there you have it. If you think you might like it, play through the demo a couple times or give it a rent. If you absolutely hated the demo or other Dungeon Crawlers like Diablo, you’re probably not going to like this game. But if you don’t like it and decide you absolutely have to write about it, remember: Too much loot is never a bad thing.

      Apparently Kingdom Under Fire : CoD tried to be a dungeon crawler of a sort too but ran into similar issues. Marvel Ultimate Alliance is also a thinly veiled dungeon crawler, just one that focuses more on the constant button mashing.

      I still say the stickwaggling adds plenty to the combat that keeps it interesting. I can also now say with experience that there is plenty of challenge for the action gamer. Getting that Achievement for never dying through a whole level is going to be a major challenge on the Ice Forest level. Maybe I’ll get lucky and have a crazy tank Defender carry me through.

      In fact, later today, I’m gonna publish my article about all the good stuff that NONE of the “critics” ever talked about within Too Human and some of the issues that absolutely need to be fixed either via patch or in the next game.

      I didn’t think the game was great, but it was a good solid one. Even though I’m not into it I was surprised to see the really low scores. I don’t think they’re even thinking of the game. They’re probably just ripping Two Human apart cause that seems like a popular think to do right now.

      One thing I forgot to mention is the mythical “10 year development OMG!”

      That irritates me more than anything going around for this game. Too Human as been a concept, an idea for 10 years. It was going to stat development when Silicon Knights and Nintendo struck a deal and Eternal Darkness was born.

      In reality, Too Human had a development life only slightly longer than your normal game. Somewhere around 4-5, maybe 6 years at the very most. Plus when you’re forced to drop your engine a year before your game’s release.. well that does things to a game. I’m sure they had to get this game out the door and make some money off of it. I’m happy to support them.

      I am playing this game, and I love it. I love it for what it will hopefully do and not so much for what it is doing now. Sure this game is good, not great, but good. But what I see is the stage set for the next Too Human game that could be even better. When you start a trilogy on the very upside of most reviews, you have something worth building on and the way paved for a truly great game.

      But I still HATE with a passion the stupid freaking Valkrye (sp?) death cutscene….lol

      Dev time for Too Human on the 360 was almost 4 years. Would have been 3 if they hadn’t had to rewrite their own engine and retrofit everything they’d made for it.

      They had to start over from the original PS one game and decided since they had to start from scratch anyways to go a different direction. It was originally a cyber-stealth action game. Then when they started on the gamecube version they were stunned when Metal Gear was offered to them. Obviously they accepted and had to put Too Human on the shelf again. The norse myth inspiration was also originally much more minimal. I’m enjoying the prominent part it has now in their “retelling” of the myths. I guess it is a bonus if you know what the original myths are, and thus how they’re putting a technical spin on them.

      B+? Hmmm. I would have said a B-. It’s a cool game at it’s core, unfortunately it’s surrounded by some poor decisions (lack of camera, death animation etc). Not to mention the general bugs present.
