Good job, SamFTW!

Megaman was originally released on the NES and Famicom systems in 1987, it was met with critical acclaim for its run and gun gameplay and challenging difficulty. Megaman 9 is the latest chapter in the blue bomber’s story and is due for its digital release this September. These 2 games are generations apart, 4 to be precise, but oddly enough they still look the same. Some people say that Nintendo aren’t radical enough with Mario and Zelda. But what have Capcom done with Megaman? Just slapped “Retro” all over their press releases and called it a day.

Let me just set the record straight. I loved Megaman. The run and gun action set to some of my favorite video game music was an excellent combo. Megaman 2 is currently my most played virtual console game, quite a feat when you know it’s up against Super Mario Bros. 3. Megaman was truly the action king of the 8-Bit Era.

A new Megaman game? Great! It’s Keeping the 8-Bit art style? Awesome! It’s coming to WiiWare? Brilliant!

This excitement for Megaman 9 stayed with me for a long time, longer than you might think, because I only lost the rush this morning. I finally got the chance to play Bionic Commando: Rearmed. Oh what a missed opportunity Capcom. Looking at the smooth 3D characters and excellent animation of this game made me realise how good Megaman could have looked.

Again and again I see franchises find a new lease of life with a current generation makeover. Bionic Commando is just one example of this phenomenon, Pacman: Championship Edition has great visuals, Galaga: Legions is being reworked in just the same way. So why is Megaman 9 stuck 4 generations behind everything else? I wouldn’t be complaining if it was a re-release of a previous game, but this is an entirely new game, and I use the term “new” loosely, so why hasn’t anything changed.

Whatever way you look at it there are 2 opinions towards Megaman 9. Either you embrace the old, or turn your back on a hero.

Please comment with your honest opinions about the game. Whether you approve of the game’s 8-Bit presentation, or would prefer a particle effects MegaBuster.

Megaman was never my game, but with all the games I’ve enjoyed I only hope they go forward. Even though I don’t like this game I probably wouldn’t turn my back to a game I love, but I don’t know if I would really embrace it.

The difference between Bionic Commando (and most of the current remakes) and Megaman is that Megaman has already done it all. It’s had the updated graphics, particle effects, 3D treatments, etc., etc. due to Capcom’s penchant for beating a dead horse. MM9 is just what Capcom needed to do to shock their comatose fanbase back to life. Nostalgia’s a powerful thing.
