The plethora of upcoming zombie-centric titles creates a rather ominous feeling. It is as if the industry’s developers are preparing gamers for some sort of undead apocalypse. With “Resident Evil 5,” “Dead Rising: Chop Til You Drop” and “The Last Guy” scheduled for release within the next year, gamers are sure going to have plenty of opportunities to hone their survival skills.
Perhaps no game will prepare us better for the brain-munching madness than Valve’s “Left 4 Dead.” Unfortunately for Playstation 3 and Wii owners, the game is currently exclusive to the Xbox 360 and PC.
Or is it?
The latest issue of the Official Playstation Magazine is sure to bring a smile to the face of any PS3 owner thirsting for some zombie-killing action. According to the publication, “Left 4 Dead” might not be exclusive to one home console. As with last year’s “The Orange Box,” Electronic Arts, not Valve, is supposedly developing a PS3 version of the game. Someone was kind enough to snap a photo of the information in question and upload it onto the Internet. You can check out the picture here.
This certainly would not be a shocking development. Though Valve has repeatedly expressed its desire not to develop PS3 games, representatives for the company have said that a PS3 version of “Left 4 Dead” could appear if another studio was willing to develop it.
Also, with numerous third-party developers choosing the multi-platform path - as seen most recently with the “Final Fantasy XIII” E3 bombshell - it would be difficult not to expect something like this to occur.
“Left 4 Dead,” for anyone unwilling to leave the shelter of their cave, is a first-person shooter with a heavy focus on multiplayer. Players must pool their efforts as they attempt to survive a relentless horde of the walking/running/exploding undead. The signature feature of the game (besides the fact that it has zombies) is the ability of the artificial intelligence to adapt to players’ abilities. The game will scale down the difficulty for those that perform poorly and will ratchet up the difficulty if a team proves adept at discarding its attackers.
The 360 and PC versions of the game are scheduled to ship on November 4.
I devoted part of a recent article to EA’s desire to erase the “evil” label that has hung over the company for quite some time. While such a move would seem to be more about money than pleasing PS3 owners, the company deserves some praise if it is indeed making “Left 4 Dead” available to a wider audience. No word yet from Valve or EA regarding the validity of the information.
Some PS3 owners might be apprehensive to purchase another EA-developed port of a Valve title, but I would rather choose not to play a crippled game than have no choice at all. What about you SGC? Would you purchase “Left 4 Dead” if it came out on the PS3? Sound off in the comment box or on the forums.
UPDATE: Valve’s Doug Lombardi has told IGN that “there is no PS3 version of Left 4 Dead currently in production.”
Though the game appears to remain a 360/PC exclusive, Lombardi clearly left the door open for a PS3 version of the game. However, it appears that the rumors were quite premature. I guess the Sony faithful can take solace in the fact that, for now, they won’t have to worry about another inferior port.

I would definitely, I just hope it doesn’t go as bad as the Orange Box

I don’t have high hopes for the PS3 port after the absolute abortion that orange box was for PS3…

Based on the reaction to the rumor, I would say most people don’t have high hopes. However, like I said, I would at least be given the option to play it.

I think EA will do a good port. They probably wouldn’t bother porting it at all if they weren’t going to do a good job because they know everyone will be unsure of whether or not to buy it if it was as bad as the orange box.

Hopefully the extra year of experience programming for the PS3 will help.
However, since we don’t know which development team would be handling the project, I don’t think it is fair to doom the game yet.

As long as they get it right, that would be awesome. More zombies for everyone!

Am I only one who thought that the Orange Box on the PS3 wasn’t that terrible? I mean what was wrong with it? I had a blast with Portal (which is pretty much the only reason I bought it), and I could get 16 people online with TF2 no problem.

I agree with Lono. My brother in law had orange box on the PS3 and he said it was crap compared to the 360 version . yes he has both. EA wont take their time to bring out a good port they just want the quick cash. Sorry I dont count it as coming out when Valve , the creative genius that created this game, wants nothing to do with it .

Hi, im thrilled to see that i can actually play l4d on my ps3,(since i dont have a 360)
and as far as the orange box port being complete crap…i didn’t play the 360 version so i didn’t have a basis for comparison and i didn’t have any problems with it, so i think its all the better really

I had a feeling that this rumor was going to turn up being wishfull thinking from the Sony crowd. I got to spend some good time talking to Chet from valve @ E3 , and he repeatedly said they don’t like the PS3 and told me there will be no collectors edition .
