October releases spell doom for my bank account

August 20th, 2008 at 5:00 pm · 15 Comments

I am not a rich man. I don’t live in a golden castle protected by a moat filled with super alligators. Those certainly sound like worthy purchases, but they are impossible to justify due to my obsession with videogames.

The first half of the year was rather kind to my wallet. Through seven months, the only additions made to my current-generation gaming library were “Super Smash Bros. Brawl,” “Mario Kart Wii,” “Grand Theft Auto IV” and “Soul Calibur IV.” I plan on purchasing “Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty” and “Mercenaries 2: World in Flames,” but $75 for the entire month of August is not going to break the bank. That is what the rest of the year is for.

Though September starts the flood of quality titles, October looks to be more detrimental to my wallet.

Many would argue that 2007 was the all-time best year for videogame software. It is hard to argue against a 12-month span that saw juggernaut releases like “Halo 3,” “Rock Band,” “Super Mario Galaxy” and “Call of Duty 4.”

Though 2007 was a banner year for games, I believe that 2008 will surpass it. This argument might be subjective, but I think it is a valid point worth discussing.

I won’t rundown the entire list of upcoming titles. The SGC is one of the most well-informed communities on the Internet. Therefore, I assume that most of you have heard of “Gears of War 2,” “Resistance 2″ and “Wii Music.” Actually, scratch that last one. I still refuse to acknowledge its existence.

Instead, I would like to focus on one month in particular.

September starts the bank-account drain with solid releases like “Star Wars: The Force Unleashed,” “Lego Batman” and “Pure.” However, a quick glance at October is enough to turn any core gamer into a shaking, nervous mess.

Some of the year’s biggest games are releasing in the tenth month. Those titles include “Dead Space,” “Bioshock,” “LittleBigPlanet,” “Guitar Hero: World Tour” and various “Rock Band 2” SKUs. Are you impressed yet? What if I told you that those five titles are releasing within eight days of each other in North America (Oct. 19 – Oct. 26)? Feel free to assume the fetal position beneath your desk.

The aforementioned list doesn’t even include “Rise of the Argonauts,” “SOCOM: Confrontation,” “Saints Row 2,” “Fallout 3” and “Spider-Man: Web of Shadows.” All are scheduled to ship in October.

Release dates are always subject to change, but for now, October is looking downright brutal.

A plethora of quality titles is never a bad thing. However, I am pondering how I am going to pay my health insurance premium for October. I realize that no one will force me to spend an astounding amount of money, but I refuse to fool myself into thinking I can show restraint. It is a quality I rarely exhibit. October is full of kick-ass games, and I want to play them as soon as possible.

Thankfully, my job will help absorb most of the financial damage. However, car insurance, health insurance, gas and entertainment expenses are going to place a very unwelcome thrashing on my bank account this fall.

What about you SGC? How many of the aforementioned titles are you planning on purchasing? How do you plan to pay for them? Plasma donations? Numerous trips to the fertility bank? Holding rich children for ransom? I detest needles and jail, so options one and three are out of the question. Option two is also unsettling. The thought of a little me running about is just plan creepy. Trust me; you don’t want me spreading my seed.

Only ones I’m getting for sure are LBP and Fallout 3. I will buy Guitar Hero and Rock Band at some point, but probably won’t be til early next year when I can afford the full set. Curious about SOCOM and Dead Space but still need them to prove themselves a little before I consider picking them up.

    • You forgot the best game of them all
Fable 2 but I’ll be able to afford them as my birthday is on the 18th october( not surprising something special is coming on SG that day :) ) lol
but ill probably buy Star Wars – The Force Unleashed, Mirrors Edge (you also forgot) , Mercenaries 2 and Fable 2 probably in that order

    • I actually forgot little big planet but i don’t have a ps3 so…screw that

It’s not that bad…As a 360 gamer Bioshock is old news for me, so there’re only games like Fallout, Fable and Dead Space that interest me.

i’m getting most of them. Especially Dead Space, Fallout 3, Resistance 2 and Bioshock. Good thing is i knew this was gonna come and started saving since the release of metal gear solid 4.

There are lots of games I would like in that list… sadly I am a working father and husband and my money goes to lots of other bills… hence why I still do not have bc: Bad Company and a host of other good games that are out right now. On the plus side this allows me to find out from all of you just how great the games truly are before I decide if I need them or if I can wait till the price drops.

      I’m getting:
      Priority:
      LBP
      Resistance 2
      Bioshock
Will wait for them to come used to my store:
      SOCOM
      Fallout 3

      List may change.

    • Pretty much every month of Fall is bad for me. Am I the only person in the world super pumped for Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway? It’s a great series and this one doesn’t look like it will disappoint!

    • BoxOfFun says:

I’ve never owned a 360 nor do I own a PS3 anymore, so I have to wait until 2009 for anything exciting on Wii. Well, Star Wars Force Unleashed will arguably be better on Wii, and I guess there are a few more awesome games coming out I don’t know about…

Even if there aren’t any, I STILL haven’t gotten past that final level of Zack & Wiki, so that might give me something to do while I wait.
