New Wii Rhythm Game Turns you into an Expert Dancer

Now, I like muffins as much as the next guy, but when it comes to Wii Ware games I’m usually pretty skeptical, and with good reason, as a certain SPOGS based racing title that shall remain nameless (namely SPOGS Racing) has proven.

However, my Wii Ware skepticism days may be over, thanks partly to the ultra popular Wii Fit being unavailable and my adoration for cheap rubbish games. Hit the jump for the full details on Helix, a new Wii Ware title that hit the service today.

Hilarity ensues.

Before we start, just have a look (and listen) to the Helix videos below.

It’s not pretty is it?

The basic premise of the game is that you watch the on-screen-manikin’s actions, of which there are 30, and then copy them when the white bars at the top cross the center of the screen. Of course this wouldn’t be too bad if it weren’t for the fact that you need 2 Wiimotes to replicate your actions, one in each hand, but being a lonely Troll that lives in a small wooden hut, only leaving occasionally to gather acorns for the future construction of ‘Eoco’s Acorn Plaza’, I only have 1 Wiimote, meaning I can’t play the game. Dagnammit!

When I first saw the gameplay, I thought someone had made a joke video in which a man, suffering from rapid and regular muscle convulsions, was pasted on top of a looping Windows XP screensaver, but then I realized that it was a game in which a stylish ‘dancer’ was meant to be ‘dancing’ in front of a snazzy music visualizer.

I mean seriously, who dances by unceremoniously throwing both their arms to the left? Well I do, but that’s not the point. These dance moves, are not even dance moves. Also, the music doesn’t really seem suited to the rapid movements. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not insulting Arabian Sky by Synthetic Man, in fact I just bought every song that he’s ever written, and donated $4000 dollars to him, it just doesn’t seem to have a strong enough beat for a rhythm game. Oh well, maybe the other 25 songs are better.

Well, I suppose at least it’s something original, and for that I commend it. I’m even going to go as far as buying it…well I’m not, I don’t have the money for it with all the upcoming releases, but I just thought that made me sound all heroic and incredible.

It didn’t did it?

Helix will be available today for the fairly reasonable price of 1000 Wii Points, but for those who don’t know how much that is, it’s roughly 800 Microsoft Points. Hope that makes things clearer for you.

So, are you gonna pick it up?

Hahaha, your articles always make me laugh Eoco. That was a brilliant line.

haha, the conversion of Wii points into Microsoft points actually DID make it clearer for me, thanks.

I could see this game being popular for kids under the age of 12, but that’s it.

1000 Wii points? I think I’m better off buying Mario RPG then this! Still, can’t wait till someone plays this and let’s go of their Wiimote causing even more Wii related damage! Oh, and like all good Wii games, you look stupid playing it!

Maybe this can help Dave’s dancing skills for the next Wii Fit video.

I bought it today. Imagine, if you will, Space Channel 5 gameplay with music and effects that you find at a rave and then imagine a workout comparable to advanced Tae Bo. Yes, it’s worth the 1,000 points. :)

Translating Wii points onto Microsoft points helped me too. That is kind of lame.

      I’ve played this game. Now, I’m a Wii Loyalist, so not many people would believe me when I say it’s a good game. So I handed this game to one of my many 360 fanboy friends. I quote;

“It makes you feel like a total prat, but then again, it’s pretty fun to play. It’s not as good as, say, DDR, but I’d still pick this over most modern dancing games.”

      So there you have it.
